Diet Trash: SoBe Life Water

Diet Trash is about the food products you might eat because you think you're doing something better for your diet, but you'll be surprised to know, they're not.

SoBe Life WaterSoBe LifeWater is a "vitamin enhanced water beverage" very similar to Glaceau Vitamin Water, except this one has antioxidants as well as vitamins. And just like I thought Vitamin Water was diettrash for having 50 calories per serving, I'm also dubbing SoBe Life Water DietTrash!

Diet Trash There are 50 calories per 8 ounce serving, and 1 bottle has 20 ounces - which means, drink a bottle of this Life Water and you're ingesting 120 calories. Don't get me wrong though - I don't think 150 calories is a lot, but I think this is DietTrash because I wouldn't expect to find so many calories with something that's supposed to be similar to water. The calories are primarily from the 13 grams of sugar per serving, or 31 grams of sugar per bottle. There is a high percentage of many vitamins and minerals, but since the first two ingredients (in order) are water and crystalline fructose, this is nothing more than a multivitamin added to sugar and water. I didn't like Glaceau Vitamin Water and I don't like this clone either.

//edit // I missed the news earlier, but apparently Glaceau Vitamin Water sued Pepsico's SoBe Life Water. "... in an attempt to take over or disrupt Glaceau's growth, SoBe Lifewater copied the formula, the colors, the flavors, the ingredients, the sweetener type (one never before used by PepsiCo) ..." [Source: Bevnet]. It also appears that SoBe Life Water settled with Glaceu's Vitamin Water by "agreeing to change the label and cap used with SoBe Life Water." That bit of news was courtesy of The Nutrition and Dietary Supplement Law Blog [link].

They definitely copied Glaceau even right down to similarities in the label. I know you didn't like either but which did you like best?

Vitamins and antioxidants in water is rediculous......eat some organic fruit for that. Pure natural products are the only way to go! For the most natural water I have found visit tasmanianrain.com.

I agree that people should use plain water instead of Vitamin or SoBe water, but instead of buying iced tea or a soda, especially diet soda, when you're craving it, this sweet, "juice-like" drink is just a refreshing thing to drink, as a substitute for soda or other drinks, but NOT for water.

I do agree also that it's ridiculous to get people to just DRINK plain water. There's sparkling and a whole bunch of flavored water to substitute for natural water. Even mineral water, the "heavy" tasting water, isn't too good for you, though it has minerals. You already eat all the minerals you need, so when you drink, you want to something with a light taste. Mineral water is not necessarily bad for you, but natural water is better for when you eat, or if you're full.

I also have been drinking SoBe life water because I am one of those many people who cannot drink just plain water. The new Life Water is TERRIBLE and leaves an after taste. Now I have to find something else. Why can't they leave well enough alone???

Karen and MAD Ex,
I'm with you! The old Sobe life water was light and had just enough flavor. It barely left an after-taste.
Now I find myself sifting through the grocery store shelves looking for the last bottles of the old Life water formula. The old formula was crisper than Vitamin Water. This new Sobe Life water tastes awful. Whats up with the saccharine taste? What a shame. I'm now forced to buying Vitamin Water and watering it down. I hope the people at Sobe go back to the old Life Water formula. It's been done before, remember the revolt when the "New Coke" came out in the 80's and they were forced to go back to "Coke Classic"? Lets all stop buying the new Life Water until they get the message!!!

I called the 800 number on the bottle to complain. I agree that this new formula stinks. The after taste on this new stuff is awful AND they increased the sodium content!! I will never buy it again. Has anyone bought something else that I can try?

I agree. Yep diet trash. I think that people are clutching at the straws if they think that "diet water " is going to help there weight management. Maybe just stick to good old water if you are concerned about calories.

I agree, What every they just recently did to the sobe water they need to change it back. It tastes nasty now. Yuck. It is worst than gatorade or powerade . I think I will stick with vitamin water.
