This week it is all about Ice cream, after all July is National Ice cream Month. Check out all our Reviews of Ice cream of the low fat variety of course. Try a flavor you haven't tried before.

Slim Fast Shake Slim Fast seems to have been around as long as dieting has been, and this "new and improved" shake is nothing but a winner in my book. I was actually very skeptical about trying the Slim Fast Optima Hunger Control Shake I mean - a shake that can control hunger? puh-lease! But a friend suggested I try them, so even though I nearly had a mini stroke at the price of $8.50 for a case of 6, I went ahead and purchased the French Vanilla flavor.

The Slim Fast shakes stayed in my refrigerator for about a week, until late one Saturday evening, as I was really pigging out on junk food and feeling quite remorseful about it while simultaneously eating more, I thought that this would be a perfect time to try the shakes and stop myself. Can I say, "Wow" I was impressed. I don't know what they put in this shake (and maybe I don't want to know), but it really seemed to work for me. I did feel full, and I didn't feel like I wanted to eat anything, and I didn't for the next few hours. The French Vanilla was a pleasant, mild flavor. The beverage is creamy, with milk (fat free) being the first ingredient.

There are 180 calories in an 11ounce can of the ready-to-drink shakes, 6 grams of fat, 2.5 grams of saturated fat (about 10% of the suggested daily values), 16% potassium, 5 grams of fiber and 17 grams of sugars. In addition, there is anywhere from 15-100% of 24 vitamin and minerals. I like the 100% vitamin E, because this can be difficult to get daily. There is even 25% vitamin K - I haven't seen added vitamin K in any other processed /man-made foods. Actually, I did want to know what they put in this shake. I spied milk, sugar, the artificial sweeteners sucralose (Splenda) and acesulfame-K and a lot of the natural thickener, carrageenan.

Now, please note that I am not here to suggest diet products to anyone, I am simply expressing my opinion on this shake. Will it make you slim? Probably not. Did it control my hunger? So it seems - I've had 4 shakes and I was satisfied every time. Will I be buying the shakes in the near future ? Probably so - when I start working and can actually afford it. Will I buy it every week? Certainly not. I wonder for how long will half a shake control my hunger?

I've tried these and while they do control hunger, they cause a major sugar spike for me. They are just too high in sugar for me. Within 2 hours of drinking this, I was EXHAUSTED, just like if I had eaten a candy bar.

One can (in this review) is 11 ounces Sarah. I forgot to include that and I updated the review with the info.

Jane - the 17 grams is not more than a can of coke though, for example, but I am definitely going to watch out for this when I have one today. Thanks for telling us :0)

Hi Tanya
Well I guess thats true, I haven't had a can of coke in decades! So I didn't even think to compare it. I just think a meal replacement should be lower on the glycemic index in order to be considered a truly healthy choice you know.

I am a believer! At age 42 and realizing that the numbers on my 300 lb. scale would soon "turn-over" much like an old-school odometer, and taking medicine for creaky knees, I knew it was time for a change. I started my diet with these Optima shakes. They may have more sugar than the average person wants, but the fact is, if you are eating/drinking like an obese person and suddenly drop to 1200 calories a day with two of the shakes and a sensible dinner, it is a winner. In 2 months time, I have lost 25 pounds. It has really not been hard. I do not only drink the Slim fast now, but it is part of my healthy choices arsenal. I drink FUZE or unsweetened tea. I am feeling much better and no more creaky knees!

I buy mine at WalMart for $5.96 a six pack. They also have specials w/ an 8 can pack for the same price. It does work to curb hunger. I added plain wulong tea or green tea as a beverage through out the morning.

The pre-made shakes are expensive - but the canisters of powder that you mix with milk are much more economical. A canister is the same price as six cans, and it makes 15 servings.

Slim Fast Optima did absolutely nothing to control my hunger. For a person who only needs to lose a few pounds these shakes might be an option but if you are more than 20 or 30 pounds over weight these are not the answer unless you have very strong will power in which case you probably don't need these anyway. The only plus I can see with these shakes is they have fairly good nutritional value but honestly I see very little difference in these and the original slim fast products.

These are FULL of sugar and sweeteners ...NOT good for you, however many vitamins/minerals are included! Steer well clear until the makers of Slim Fast add NATURAL sweeteners, i.e. Xylitol, which is a natural birch sugar, great for dental healthy (in many mouth washes/Smints, etc.) and low in calories. Sugar is our enemy!

I was scare to try this product, but someone sayed that is perfect for young people that is trying to lose a couple or maybe 5 pounds, I dont think is a bad idea, but people over weight I think they should try other diets, lose weight is not starving is to eat less and healthy, many fruits, liquids and exercise believe me. Dont wait to much to start diet, while you geting older is more hard to lose weight

I find that if I eat a small snack and drink one, it controls hunger longer. It gets me that 6 hours between lunch and dinner without snacking. If I drink it on an empty stomach, it doesn't do squat.

I used these shakes 2 yrs ago and lost 20 lbs
from 138 to 118, if you read the back panel, call the # on the back and they will send you a personal plan. A lot of people belive, like i did that your just suppose to drink a shake 2 times a day and a dinner, but you eat breakfast and lunch along with the shake. the meal plan they send you helps you with what to eat and the portion size. ex. i would eat a half of a turkey sandwich on wheat bread and some pretzels along with my shake for lunch. I also did not work out, just normal activite, kept the weight off for 2 yrs.just now starting back because i gained 7 lbs this summer.
oh the 20 lbs came off in less than 3 months

I just started this. I started off with the cans of shake, but now do the powder (chocolate royale). The cans has like 14 servings which is extremely economical! I also use a blender. I put a scoop of the powder, 1 c. milk, 2/3 c. very potent french press (cold) add ice and blend away! It is like a diet, frappucino! And this system does keep me from eating up a storm out of boredom. I now "rethink" what I want to put in my body, and if I'm really hungry or bored. This has been the best jump start for me. Also I take:fish oil, ginkgo biloba, and a energy product called Yellow Subs Extreme. The combination of all of these is amazing!! Good luck!!!

I think these shakes are great. They are convenient for lunch and keep me feeling full for hours. I even eat less at dinner time because I'm still not that hungry. As far as sugar goes, 17g is not much compared to the original Slim Fast which has 35g. For the record a 12 ounce Coke or Pepsi has 40g of sugar. I have to say, though, that I absolutely love the high protein shakes. Sadly, they are not only more expensive, but they come in a 4-pack. Not quite worth the money for the 5 extra grams of protein.

My girlfriend opted for Herbalife shakes instead and dropped the 38lbs she needed and feels healthier than ever and with lots of energy. I've always been skeptical about these things, so I did the homework, even though my girlfriend's results were enough to believe, so now I'm taking the shakes for nutrition and feel great. They don't have the amount of sugar slim fast has. It only has 11g of carbs (from fructose), only 90 calories, only 1g of fat (unsaturated), dietary fiber and isolated soy protein, which is great for cardiovascular health, plus lots of vitamins and minerals. I'm not suggesting everyone takes them to lose weight, but they are also great as a nutritional supplement, since they are made of natural ingredients that help your body have a better absorption of the nutrients

I have always lost weight when I drink these. You have to use them the way Slim Fast intended for you to use them. As with ANY other diet plan. You also have to remember that they are only 180 cals a can, so you have to add something to it for a sensible meal. For instance, I follow this plan:

breakfast: 300 cal
snack: 100 cal
Lunch: 400 cal
snack: 100
Dinner: 500

Which is 1400 cals a day. So for breakfast, I need to add in another 120 cals in addition to the shake. Etc., At lunch I have to add another 220 cals in addition to the shake. I try to add a salad/fruit, etc., something healthy. I think what I like most about the shakes is they are "light". Not heavy. I also use them during the summer months when I dont like to feel full & hot. Cappuccino Delight is my favorite.

I tried my first one this morning. Gave me the same shakey, spacey feeling I got years ago from taking Dexatrim. The regular Slim-Fast I feel fine drinking. It must be the appetite-suppresant they add that makes me this way. Wish I could get my money back I wasted on this can.

These shakes are delicious. Put one in the freezer for an hour and you have a smoothie. I keep carrots and celery sticks at my desk to munch on between meals at work. I lost 3o lbs on the original Slimfast 7 years ago and a few have recently returned, so I'm trying the Optima plan.

I just purchased a case at Sam's Club yesterday for $19.99. There are two types of cases available. One with 24 cans and one with 24 cans plus six bonus. A lot cheaper than the Walmart brand plus it has the hunger control.
