This week it is all about Ice cream, after all July is National Ice cream Month. Check out all our Reviews of Ice cream of the low fat variety of course. Try a flavor you haven't tried before.

popcorn Tell the truth - you sorta had a feeling that the popcorn sold in movie theaters wasn't too good for you - didn't you? Well, I'm here to tell you that it's worse than you thought. From CSPI: "The smallest servings we found (a kid-size at Cineplex Odeon or a small bag at AMC) contain 20 grams of fat, 14 of them saturated. That's close to 3/4 of your saturated fat limit for an entire day.

A large popcorn had about 80 grams of fat, more than 50 of them saturated. Diet Trash That's almost three day's worth of sat fat, or what you'd get from six Big Macs. And that's if you skip the "butter." Succumb to the "butter" on your large popcorn and you'll boost the fat to close to 130 grams, or two days worth, plus four day's worth of cholesterol. But what's another two Big Macs when you're already up to six?"

Here are some popcorn nutrition facts: Small with butter: 580 calories 47 grams fat (72% of daily recommendations) from Calorie King

Medium (no butter): 650 calories, 43 grams fat (66% of daily recommendations) and 31 grams saturated fat (155% of daily recommendations) from DietFacts.com.

This is ridulous! Governments really need to step in and ban this type of crap before we all die from obesity!

This is ridiculious, however, we as the people can make a change. Remember when Supersize me came out? What did the fast food chains do after that? Apple dippers and other healthier options, this is what we need more than anything.

The last time I checked, you could stand inside a theater all day and no one would make you eat the stuff. Do you gobble down everything the government hasn't banned? Besides, the government's in the business of making people fat -- have to SEEN how much bread it expect people to eat every day? Just FYI, the govt's food pyramid is the same ratio of grains/fats/etc as cattle feed. And they don't feed cattle stuff to keep 'em thin!

We all know it's not good for us. So don't eat it.

I really don't need the government to step in everytime I turn around. What ever happened to personal responsibility?

Or, instead of blaming the gov't for all of their problems, Anonymous, they can choose to stop shoveling it into their mouths. Self-reliance and personal responsibility are the key.

People that come in here with their snooty remarks - just STFU. Seriously. Of COURSE no one is forcing food down people's throat (no shit Sherlock). A lot of people are just UNAWARE of how bad these things are for them, myself included (until now!). I thought I was doing good by sharing a medium tea and a small popcorn (sans butter) with my husband. Guess I was WAY wrong. The last 2 times we went to the movies though, we bought NOTHING because the prices are so high ($5 for a SMALL popcorn? I rest my case).

I'm still going to eat it. I work out every day and have a high metabolism. It feels good to be bad once in awhile. The movie theater "butter" is vegan at least.

As a former manager of a movie theater, you should at the very least see what it's popped in. When I worked for Regal Entertainment Group, we were using Coconut Oil to pop our corn. Yes, coconut oil. It was solid at room temp and needed to be melted before we could use it.

Some theaters have switched to canola oil, but you should always check.

I agree with most of you! Don't eat it if you don't want to... The government shouldn't be responsible for monitoring an individuals decisions at the movie theater snack line any more than the candy aisle at the grocery store!

Wow! There are lots of opinions out there. First off the facts are that it is incredibly unhealthy, and there is a major problem with people who aren't educated on just how bad it is for the human body. Second, government should take an active role in preventing certain things that are in essence poisons. The reason for this is that the American government takes up a huge portion of the costs in treating people who have basically bloated and poisoned themselves with this “food substitute”. While there is a great deal of personal responsibility that should be had by everyone in regards to their consumption, it doesn’t exist for many individuals either due to ignorance, gluttony, emotional problems, or one of many other issues that are unfortunately less manageable than regulation of certain food-like products.
In response to Thu: August 7, 2008 “Yo Mama’s” comments: I am extremely happy that you do exercise and are able to eat this poor substitute for food as a guilty pleasure. You are a prime example of how we as a nation could function without regulations of these less than health food-like products. Unfortunately, you are in a growing minority and since this is a forum for voicing opinions, I truly believe that it is a responsibility of an organization such as the FDA to regulate these rather toxic products. Do not take this as libelous or mean-spirited towards you I simply thought your stood out as an exceptional example of a person who has found a way to mitigate the nasty effects of the food substitutes found in the movie theaters.
In response to Wed: August 13, 2008 “american’s” poorly thought-out comment at the mention of Cuba: it’s rather humorous that you mentioned Cuba; because Cuba has a much healthier national population than that of the United States. Also, a higher level of regulation doesn’t actually imply Communism, as Communism is a philosophical political structure that at its roots is different than that established by the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, so next time you shoot your mouth off you should probably have a little bit backing your argument so you don’t look quite as foolish.

As unaware as people may be about the nutrition information of movie theater popcorn, I think most people are twice as unaware as to how much control the government already has, and how much control they have gained in the last years. They control way too much already, they're trying to control even more. When are people going to take responsibilty for themselves instead of blaming everything that's wrong with them on the government, then expecting the government to come in and "bail" them out.

Movie theater popcorn is an occasional TREAT - not a diet staple!

If you go to the movies once a week, and have a medium, unbuttered popcorn, you will not necessarily become obese.

There are *hundreds* of high calorie/fat foods out there. Just watch what you eat and don't eat the super high calorie stuff too often.

Movie theater popcorn is one of my three favorite foods. But I don't eat it too much or too often. I know how much calories and fat are in it and adjust my eating around it. Simple!!

If the governmet were to ban this stuff, they should also ban cakes, pies, and all the other things we love that are terrible for us. Either we watch our own diets... or the government should watch EVERYTHING we eat, not special target foods.
