Diet Trash: Glaceau Vitamin Water

Diet Trash is about the food products you might eat because you think you're doing something better for your diet, but you'll be surprised to know, they're not.

Glaceau WaterWater with Vitamins and Minerals - lots of them too - great! What's not so great is that one bottle of this stuff is 2.5 servings, and each serving has 50 calories. Therefore, you can get 125 calories from one bottle of water. Diet TrashThis seems wrong on so many levels! But what's even worse is each serving has 13 grams of sugar, which translates to 32.5 grams of sugar per bottle or about 8 teaspoons of sugar.

Yes I think this is Diet Trash - perhaps it's great for runners and athletes, but for dieters - no!

I almost had a heart attack when I read this because I enjoy Glaceau Fruit water (which is pictured) with lunch many times during the week. Although you are totally correct that vitamin water, a sister product to fruit water, is a scam and does have 50 calories per 8oz serving, the fruit water product line that Glaceau makes only has 20 calories, making a bottle about 50 calories total - or 1 WW point. It's a important distinction and I thought I should mention.

Thanks for creating and maintaining such a great website!

Last week there was a free vit-water giveaway near my office. When I looked at the label, I was surprised to see how many calories it has. It's just like gatorade!

I think the math is a little off on this... Wouldn't 2.5 servings at 50 calories per serving total 125 calories? Maybe that's not a huge difference. Maybe it is.

I think the only thing fair to compare it to is Gatorade. It's a million times better than soda, surely. And depending on your needs (are you thirsty, or are you running a marathon and need the calories/electrolytes/etc?), I don't think it's all that bad. I'd chose it over Gatorade any day.

FruitWater now contains sugar. I can't believe they screwed it up by adding sugar -- I haven't bought it in months, and now it's always on sale at the supermarket -- they can't give it away.

Thanks Carol for letting us know! Water with sugar - sounds less like water and more like a "fruit flavored drink" to me.

I don't think this is diet trash. It is better thatn regular water. Since there is no RDI for sugar, you can't really say that you are taking into much. And in the grand scheme of things, 125 calories for a beverage isn't much, considering all the good vitammins and nutrients you consume and especially when comparing to pop.

Vitamin Water is a great gimmick. Fabulous! Too bad there's no chance that any vitamins have survived by the time you drink it. The half-life of most vitamins degrades considerably with exposure to UV light... hence why most vitamins are sold in those ugly brown bottles. I've had several food scientists and chemists tell me this and word around town is that the FTC is looking into this as well. So while there were certainly vitamins added to the water at the point of manufacture, there is no potency (or very, very little) left at the time of consumption.

Vitamin water is great for hang overs and extended parties. Probably not so good for dieting.

i think that vitamin water is tasty and in no way was i duped to believe that i was drinking some ultra healthy drink. all i know is that it has to be better for you than gatorade and definitely pop.

vitaminwater is packaged in uv coated bottles so the vitamins will not degrade. the potency of the vitamins are at the levels stated on the label and will be at that level for at least 9 months.

I have been wondering about the change to Fruitwater--adding fructose. I used to love Fruitwater w/o the sugar. Now I don't like the flavor at all--too sweet and no longer healthy. Why the change? I have been unable to find a way to contact Glaceau to ask. Their websites come up requesting a user name and password.

who makes this up? has anyone looked at the calories, carbs, and sugars in a glass of orange juice? i am no expert on how long the vitamins would last but if they are actually in the bottle it also has more vitamins then a glass of orange juice as well. best give up your glass of orange juice in the morning

Less salt than gatorade and custom mixes to suit your needs. As for the calories unless your anorexic or a couch potato I don't think 100 calories will kill you..

this is basically sugar water with a few minerals. great gimmick!

Only in the U S and A can a company sell "water" that has over a 100 calories per serving with crystalline fructose which is a disquise for high fructose corn syrup.

Obviously you shouldnt just rely on vitamin water to keep you healthy. I find that it doesnt leave a film in my mouth like gatorade does, and sometimes I just dont feel like a plain glass of water. So what if it has 13 or so grams of sugar per serving? If I watched every little thing I put in my body, I would waste my lunch hour before I even got to eat. Heres a thought. Waste less time worrying about how much sugar you are eating and more time in the gym. Lazy diets never got anyone anywhere.

I was wondering if anyone out there has experienced side effects from drinking Vitamin Water by Glacier? I was trying yo drink it instead of soda because it has alittle bit less sugar. Everytime I drink it I find that I wind up with a headache. The follow day, my stomach bothers me. Has anyone else experienced this?

well, well, well....i was just loving this "vitamin" water..(!!)..a friend had brought it to me when i was sick and it ~was~ so much tastier than plain old water, so i went to buy some for myself and saw that they had many "flavors"...i tried the cran-grapefruit (yummi by the way), but basically "chose" it b/c it said "(c + glucosamine)" and i thought, well, i'm not exactly a true believer in the miracle of vitamins, your body cant process 1/2 of them anyway, but i figured "hey! if it ever turns out there was a ring of truth 10plus yrs from now on the glucosamine thing then i'd ~naturally~ be ahead...but it did sound a little iffy, especially with the clear bottle and all. so i typed in "vitamin water scam?" and low and behold it got me to this site.
Hmmmmm, kinda yummi alternative to H2o, maybe better than soda, i like a big butt and cannot lie, and no headaches so far...think i'll try it every now and then, and not use it to replace my regular dose of water.
lots of good reading here, thanx!

I love Vitamin Water! However, I only drink it when I'm working out. It gives me more energy than just water because it has sugar. But I love how it tastes. I could drink it all day!

Vitamin water is the best! I have found it as a great replacement to my usual morning drink (450 calorie latte or frappucino) and take it into my 1500 cal/day count. I am counting my calories and just add it in there. I feel happier and asked my doc about it, she said it is probably b/c of the added electrolytes and vitamins. I don't think there is a "gimmick" at all; all of the info is on the bottle! Read it!

I, for one, never drink water and am hopelessly devoted to soda and iced teas. At least with Vitamin Water I'm getting some essential vitamins and minerals. Drinking this after I exercise is a lot better than downing a can of Coke. Vitamin Water may not be the healthiest drink, but for non-water drinkers such as myself, this is definitely an improvement.

well i susbsitute vitamin water for water becuase i dont like water at all. on the other hand i burn off all those calories because imma cheerleader ans we practice a lot. so it matters what your doing if if its good for you or not.

I love vitamin water, but have had a little trouble finding it where I live. The most reliable source for this wonderful product has been my local pharmacy. I have found that the vitamin water helps to curb my appetite and that instead of grabbing my usual calorie filled sweet, i can be satisfied with 20 oz of delicious v-water. So to all of you nay-sayers give this product another chance and substitute vitamin water in place of soft drinks at your next party, I assure you that it will be a hit!

I use to drink a lot of diet coke, but now I just have Vitamin Water. It's just better for me when I'm in a non-water mood.

This is a very healthy drink for runners

if you're dieting, why aren't you just drinking water? this isn't advertised as a diet drink, just a healthy alternative for everyday people, especially those who could use the occasional boost.

it's really not that much sugar, not that many calories, and nothing's perfect. the more we worry about living the best life we can and the less we worry about nutrition facts, the happier and healthier we will be. everything in moderation, right?

In response to the Anonymous poster about side effects... Exactly why I was Googling Vitamin Water. I have been buying it on sale (the only reason I really buy anything but the basics) and drinking it as a morning companion to other foods I know don't have much content to them, for examples: muffins (although I add flaxseed to them). On a couple of occassions, I have been plagued with abnormal and short-lived... uh... a complete flush-out (a euphemism for you-know-what) that starts with some alarming churns of the stomach. Thankfully, it is not painful just inconvenient. 'Was it the muffins or the Vitamin Water?' I thought after more than one experience, each time about 30 minutes after such a breakfast. Then I had some XXX-flavored VW (new to me) on a pretty empty morning stomach and, well it's definitely the Vitamin Water. Thing is, I don't know if this is just a morning thing or not. It only seems to happen when I drink it in the morning. I guess that makes the gimmick-or-not issue easy for me; gimmick or not, no more Vitamin Water.

It has the same effect on my stomach! Every single time...like clockwork. :) Very strange.

OMG SIde-effected!

On April 21, 2007 I came to the exact same revelation about Vitamin Water. I was in NY for my b-day and had a sudden attack on my bowels. Talk about inconvienent! I had noticed that I have been in these situaions frequently and the only common denominator was Vitamin Water. Ok.. so now I know Im not crazy (or sick). Too bad they make these drinks so deliciously wonderful

125 calories isn't bad per bottle. there are more calories in an 8 oz. glass of orange juice ! i think the focus shouldn't be on calories, since not all calories are bad calories. also, vitaminwater and fruitwater are made with crystalline fructose, which is 70% less sweet than regular sugar. glaceau doesn't use splenda or sugar supplements because they cause sugar cravings and are bad for you.

"I, for one, never drink water" and "i dont like water at all." are you kidding me? i hate americans.

I LOVE Vitamin water. My friends and I are all addicted to it. Sure, its not a DIET drink, but no one ever said it was. Its much better than a soft drink, and it gives you the vitamins you'd otherwise be lacking if you were me haha.

Personally, I've never had any side-effects from it. I usually only drink 1 a day, then I drink smart water for the rest. But so far, it doesnt bother me at all. I love!

My problem is I just cant ever find the flavors I like :(

I went on a 14 mile bike ride today and drank water on the ride. When I got home, I had a vitamin water and blew up like a balloon. I'm so bloated. I still feel awful 4 hours later. Ugh. I read something about not drinking sugars after a long workout and this explains it. Ick.

You all keep saying "125 calories isn't bad for one drink" but the fact is it's supposed to be HELPING you, not hurting you. Water should have NO calories. The crystalline fructose has gosh darn ARSENIC in it. Do you really want to slowly poison yourself over time by drinking something that barely has any benefits, since the vitamins can't even survive the clear bottles? And the fructose can create fatty liver if you constantly intake it. I vote pure water all the way... stock up on some liter bottles, whatever brand you like (I'm a personal fan of Fiji...tastes like nothing which is exactly what it should taste like) and you'd be surprised at the great taste of an ice-cold glass of water after either a long day or working out!

Most of you are not noting the difference between Fruitwater and Vitamin water. I'm enjoying a wonderful bottle of peach Fruitwater right now, and yes, there is a little sugar in it, but only 50 calories in the entire bottle. Vitaminwater is very, very different.

Vitamin Water is so obviously a scam. You can get all the artificial vitamins your body can possibly use from a single daily multivitamin. Yes, it's not much worse than fruit juice, but while nutritionists think eating fruit itself is great, they think of fruit juice as about the same as Coke.

There are lightly flavored waters with no calories at all. Also, the less sugar you eat, the less it takes to get something to taste sweet. And fructose is the worst type of sugar.

1 bottle a week = 13 lb weight gain a year (to me that's a lot!)

i think its stupid how some of you people might think vitamin water is unhealthy or how theres a gimmick to it, if some of u say that the vitamins "life" is cut short because of uv rays then the same thing must happen to anything else right? take orange juice for example unlike most people i can have oj because they natural sugar in it makes me sick, the same goes for apple juice and grape juice. so for me vitamin water is a good choice since gatorade also very high in sugar and leaves a bad tasting like film in your mouth and soda which we all know is unhealthy, vitamin water is a better choice then that and if some people think its unhealthy they should stop complaining because if its unhealthy then just dont buy it other people enjoy just the taste of it not the benefits u get from drinking it

all you that like vitamin water and drink it expecially as an alternative to pop or gatorade keep drinking it. all you that are health freaks drink water and get over it. now i'm off to eat a double quarter pounder ;0

theres a reason why coke bought it. you compare vitamin water to soda. soda has like triple the calories triple the sugar triple everything. vitamin water also has vitamins. talking about it wont last in the bottle at least you do get some vitamins. and 100 calories wont kill you. its a better alternative then soda gatorade etc. you cant drink water ALL the time sometimes you need a little taste and that is what vitamin water offers.

i had a bottle of vitamin water yesterday, and later that day it made my stomach feel weird, and then I had the runs.
I thought it might be something I ate, but then I had another bottle after I woke up. It was on an empty stomach, so that might have been bad, but I had the same bowel problem as yesterday.
why would this drink be causing this?

I used to drink Vitamen water all the time however, i got annoyed that i had to add 125 cals to my diet plan. I usually never drink anything that I could eat with a fork and after a while i ended up going back to my 2 favs, diet peach snapple, and Arizona diet green tea.

Vitamin water is fine guys
Calories is only the ammount of energy you get from Fats, Protiens, And Carbs
And The only ones to worry about are Calories from Fats.
And as Hollywood will tell you "carbs are the enemy" they are idiots. You can never go through physical activity without carbs

and Gordo.
The reason it did that is because you need something to eat with it.
Being so rich in vitamins, and since you can really only digest certain vitamins and minerals, If you drink it on an empty stomache, you will only digest those vitamins along with nothing else, causing "the runs" because it is so unsaturated with solid matter

My guess is that the people experiencing the green apple quick step are drinking the "Energy" flavor Vitamin Water with natural Caffeine added.

I add Vitamin Water to regular water. Helps me drink more water and I intake less calories thank drinking a full container of the water! Plus each bottle lasts longer.

vitamin water is the best!!!!and i should know...i have inside knowledge ..they make it with good old fashioned know how and a sense of humor! read the labels.....some people may not like it but what the heck you can't please everyone...but..it's a lot better for you than soda!

Vitamin water contains Cystallince Fructose which is basically high fructose corn syrup in disguise but worse. HFCS can contain anywhere from 50-80% fructose the rest being glucose. Crystalline Fructose contains over 90% fructose. How is this bad? Glucose is metabolized in all cells in the body, whereas fructose is only metabolized in the liver. I wouldnt much be concerned with 125 calories as I would with the liver damage over long term consumption of fructose. You are better off drinking a product sweetened with pure cane sugar

I don't think that this is much better for you than regular soda- that's a lot of sugar and calories in one bottle- initially I started drinking it, thinking it was a healthy choice because of the Vitamins- however after looking a little closer at the label I've changed my mind. Just not worth the calories in my opinion.

Holy smokes, I can't believe everybody's up in arms about 50 or 125 calories! I use this stuff after a workout and love it. If I wanted zero calories, and sometimes I do, I'd go for water.

I hate to point this out to all the people who are claiming this is an excellent option for runners or even the casual athelete; but Vitamin Water contains very few electrolytes and actually has far too few calories to replace energy burned in a workout (about 100 calories per 45 minutes of vigorous exercise). You really can't consider this a fair comparison to Gatorade, Powerade, or other sports drinks due to the massive difference in electrolyte and calorie levels. Vitamin Water is really just a tasty, trendy drink and no more. It is a poor post or during exercise option as it fails to replace the salts your body loses (the entire reason people re-hydrate with these drinks as opposed to water).
Feel free to disagree, but as a 4 year division I rower, competetive marathoner and trail runner, and a person who holds a minor in exercise science I can tell you I would NEVER consider this an athlete's drink.

Either way, its tasty...so enjoy.

i have been on such a vitamin water rampage lately! i will go for a long bike ride to the store, buy some VW and enjoy! i must have drunken about 5 bottles in the past two days!

but today, my friend was telling me that her friend had some bad side-effects from drinking it. she said that she had to get 3 cavities filled and 2 teeth pulled from just drinking the vitamin water! and now i'm very hesitant about ever drinking VW again! i'm wondering if she really had these teeth problems from the VW, or she just didnt brush her teeth :]

so that is why i googled it, but so far i havent found any other "teeth-related" problems with vitamin water.

Well I am also an athlete- a distance runner. I think vitaminwater is great stuff after a workout, but only when combined with some other type of energy bar. Everyone is complaining about the sugar content but they don't realize that there are different kinds of sugar that effect you differently. I drink vitamin water after every run(excluding morning doubles).

well i happen to love vitamin water... it is good for you and tasty! it is loaded with B-vitamins (which to any of you that say it puts on the pounds, B-vitamins aid in increading your metabolism) and calcium which also aids in increasing your metabolism... so if you're worried about gaining a small 125 calories, vitamin water aids to your bodies overall speed of breaking down calories

After having a bottle I was excited... tasted good, vitamins, wow... I found something good for you that taste good.Unfortunately or should I say forunately I noticed crystalline fructose. Not knowing what this was I thought I would look into it. There are previous posts that mention how bad it is. I am bummed to find out this drink is not healthy at all.

I love Vitamin water, one bottle last me 2-3 days as I mix it with my daily 32 oz of plain water. Which is as it should be. If you are trying to stop drinking soda this is a great product, and no high fructose corn syrup!!!

I just bought a case without looking at the ingredients, thinking it was good for you, what a dummy I was, it contains crystalline fructose which turns out to be another name for high fructose corn syrup! No better than soda (except for the non-carbonation).

I LOVE VITAMIN WATER. Say what you want but it makes me feel better.

I've never encountered any side effects on an empty stomach or otherwise. I love it.

ok well I love v-water & ok first it not a gimic because no one said it was a something for a diet & sure its got sugar but only 13g & comparing it to a can of coke wicth has 39g of sugar it much healther + v-water has extra vitamins that everyone might need also it has alot more liquid for youre buck

*for the people who have side affects no afence stop drinkin it

*for the people who r haveing a hard time finding it try costco or ur local walmart, healthfood store they should have big packs or endvitials

*for the athleats keep on drinkin this is what this produck was made for

*finaly for the people like me who love vitimin water & drink it when it is avalbul to who & who still drink water I feel the v-water is a funner way to drink water & is not diet trash hope I helped if not so sry

I like the stuff. If nothing else, a different bottle for different things helps me focus on getting through a task. As for if it's Real Enough:
SAN DIEGO -- Vitamin-infused bottled water beverages are exactly what they're cracked up to be, according to a new study: vitamin-infused.

Well if anybody is looking for a healthier (and cheaper) alternative to Vitamin Water, go to www.lundmarkintl.com and type in the password 'health' then search for 'twist tubes'. This supplement company called Nutrilite (www.Nutrilite.com) just came out with these twist tubes that retail at $10.99 for 20 of them & make at least 16 oz. of vitamin water per tube...they have 4 different flavors right now & you can check the nutritional info on the website, but they have no sugars (sweetened with sucralose). Calorie content isn't listed on the box, but given what's in them, it doesn't seem like they have any calories, and certainly not 50 or even 20. So far I've tried the Strawberry-Kiwi (for immunity) & it reminds me a lot of the fruit waters before they started putting the sugar in - delicious...my husband thinks it tastes like Kool-Aid, so he loves it too!

Oh I should also mention too...no, um, detrimental side effects with the twist tubes either!

Umm... you forgot to mention that vitamin water contains crystalline fructose, which is horrible for your body! (not to be confused with high fructose corn syrup). Along with the outrageous calorie count it's clear you have to be:
A. stupid or
B. looking to get fat

I was diagnosis with a Sugar & caffine overdose. I was drinking enegry drinks & also Vitamin water everyday for a year and a half. I also tested positive for Steroids. My cardiologist told me that Vitamin water has traces for Steriods. Please help me out has anyone heard of this?

I must say, the marketing team at Glaceau should pat themselves on the back for this great gimick. For anyone that has ever taken an introduction to a nutrition course would not have the wool pulled over there eyes. You get all the vitamins you would need from food and ingesting more from a supplemented water (because the company tells you it's good for you) will put more strain on your kidneys then needed. Also your body will just get rid of the excess through urnie. So if you want to litterally piss your money down the drain by all means endorse vitaminwater.

There was a comment about why worry about the amount of sugar you are drinking in this so called water.....the reason why is because of the saying "you are what you eat". Why would you replace normal water with sugar water - just for some extra energy?? Why not try eating healthy food (and drinks) and exercise - get your energy in a "natural" way instead of drinking it?

you people are stupid the sugar in there is crystalline fructose, the same sugar in FRUIT

vitamin water is great, taste great, the back of the labels are hilarious, and they do give you a good amount of energy.

but it is rediculous, I agree, water should stay water.

vitamin water is delicious and good for runners. who cares how many calories it has?! you cant take the calories out of everything we consume. glaceau has a sense of humor, thise mini stories on the side of the bottle are a great idea. but hey, i guess you cant please everyone.

well, i have read all of the comments &&&im extremely disappointed in VW. i dont drink the stuff all of the time but on occasion i do, but the thing that worried me is that mah friends do, at lunch they buy thier VW&&& some chips, i personally prefer water and cheez-its. but im wondeirng. is it bad or not? i dont want opinions from u, i want the facts. all this is, is opinions &&how ur a cheerlearders, and track runners, and say its good, but u havent proven it.

sorry for being rude, but ahah, i need the facts not ur opinions

thanks [:

I agree with everyone the maths is off. Dose anyone else have any other side effected beside stomach ache and headache. Because I'm getting a pain sensation from my chest after I drink the vitamin water

bottom line this stuff is big business and a lot more people like it than not - especially gen Yers - water as we knew it is changing fast

You're wrong about the Fruit water. It has 20 calories per serving. which ads up to 50 calories per bottle. and it has 5 grams of sugar per serving, which only adds up to 12.5 per bottle..It's better to have real sugar than that fake chemical crap, that will only cause cancer.

Fruit water has 20 calories a serving, not 50 and with 2.5 servings in the bottle, that's 50 calories a bottle.

Hah. I personally LOVE vitamin water. It's really good, and why should you spend every SECOND of the day worrying about adding only 125 calories to your diet. It's really not that much. Plus it makes you feel more energized, and you don't have to drink it everyday. Drink it when you're tired or something, or if you're doing a sport. And if you have pain or "the runs", eat it with something else! Duh.

Wow,am I really reading this correctly? Just because there is sugar in VW this does not mean it is "hurting" you and if water should not contain sugar then why not just drink regular water. One must be a little ignorant to think that Vitamin Water is a substitute for bottled arrowhead.

Vitamin water tastes good, helps quench ones thirst and is was better than a red bull or a soda!!

I just started drinking vitamin water. latley I am very anxious and jittery. could it be from the water ? does anyone else have this side effect?

If you drink only water, and more than a gallon a day you are also unhealthy. Water weight is harder to lose than other amounts of weight. Also too much water will cause your brain too swell and well the results aren't good, we're talking about death here. Also the bottles are UV-coated meaning the vitamins do last. Besides they don't spend time in the sun to even experience enough UVL to degrade vitamins anyhow. The facts are on the bottle. They are not trying to trick you, they label the correct nutrient facts and its YOUR job to read. Don't insult a drink, just don't drink it. I'm 17 and love the stuff, I need the vitamins and the water is great. I plan to join the Marines next year and need a little weght gain anyways, so if I gain weight good! Its not advertised to diet you, diets are excercise and work-outs not eating! They even say on the bottles don't expect miracles, but each individual bottle contains its own specific nutrient to help you.

And if you also drink energy drinks you will lsoe weght because of guarana, and Taurine. **Taurine is not bull secretions, its an amino acid that you coul use that when humans are infants they produce it through cytozines**

anyways VW is great for you, dont label it to diet because its doesn't say thats what it does.

And to sue sierocinski the side effect is caused by the elctrolytes, electrolytes produce natural energy and make people happier, though don't drink more than 1 bottle a day of VW because the inbalance of elctrolytes could or amy make you sick. So just becareful thats all

I drink 2 bottles of vitamin water (20 fl oz) every day, would this 'over doze' have any side effects?

"Water shouldn't contain sugar."

Duh. Water doesn't. Vitamin water isn't plain water, however. It's rather foolish to be surprised, then, when it contains 'stuff' besides, well, water.

"If you drink 1 Vitamin water a week you'll gain X amount of pounds a year."

Or you might not gain any, depending on your metabolism and/or activity. Calories are necessary, you know, no matter how much you treat them like dirty words.

As for it being a scam, try to keep in mind that not all health products are made for dieters.

umm guys calories provide energy. what is the deal yall sound like anerexic kids.

I thought that Vitamin Water tasted great until some of these reviews. It's so hard dieting; theres organic with lots of fats then normal food low in fat... It's all a bunch of mess. I am always on the run so I grab one of these in the morning. There ARE calories but I'm not eating in the mornings [no time] so the Vitamin Water fills me up. Also, they're not fat calories so what's the big deal? So maybe Vitamin Water isn't what we all expected but what are we looking for? A miracle? I think that the best solution for this apparent "scam" is stick to regular water and deal with it.

can anyone tell me where VitaminWater says it's a DIET water or anywhere near that. Last I checked it was VitaminWater not DietWater, it supplies vitamins not dietary supplements or help. The true idea behind VitaminWater is to supply those who want to stay away from soda and sugar filled juices and also those who don't "like" drinking a whole lot of water an option.

First off, a bottle of Vitamin Water has a negligble vitamin content as compared to 8oz of orange juice.

Second, these products are made from distilled water. Distilled water lacks any naturally occurring minerals. Thus, as your body is taking in this "empty" water, the water absorbs what vitamins and minerals you already have, leaving you with LESS vitamins than when you started.

Add in the 125 calories, and 32 grams of sugar (about 8 teaspoons), and you have a very bad drink.

i too believe i am suffereing from side effects of vitamin water. for the past couple months i have had headaches literally 24/7 that have gotten so persistent not even prescription meds will get rid of them now. i have also been feeling just blah and sick all the time, and have been going to the bathroom way more than usual. when i was talking to some people tonight they mentioned VW being bad for you and then it donned on me that i have been have been drink one bottle a day for the past couple of months. yes its hard to believe that something that seems so harmless might actually have such terrible side effects but the doctors have run all kinds of blood tests and cant seem to find anything wrong with me that could cause these symptoms. i am going to try not drinking it for a full week and see how i am feeling. i will post again with my results. given all the tests i have had, im thinking this might just be the problem, we shall see!

oh and i forgot to mention the fact that i have been gaining weight like crazy the past couple of months and drinking VW is the only thing that has changed. I am a dance teacher plus i workout and i have a healthy diet, none of which has changed during all of this. it may not be a ton of calories but i suppose if your body doesnt tolerate the stuff well it could just mess everything up. i have never gained weight like this in my entire life!

VW uses a sweetener; Crystalline Fructose. Which contains:
Fructose
*Arsenic
Chloride
Glucose
*Heavy metals (as Pb)
*Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF)
*Lead
*Sulfate
---------
What I found interesting by this search was that Crystalline Fructose contained *Arsenic. Also, HMF; HMF is found in cigarettes.
*Lead, Lead is a poisonous metal that can damage nervous connections and cause blood and brain disorders.

Segio I agree with you. Vitamin water is awesome and good for you all at the same time. I argue with people all the time about the fact that its better than soda. I have friends who say it's as bad as soda and becuase it has SOME sugar it's bad. There dumb. Vitamin Water Rules!!!

don't be spoofed read the label vitamin waters suger comes from suger cane ( a natural sugar) other drinks like propel and gatorage G2 may have less calories but contain high fuctose corn syrup ( a processed "sugar" thats damaging to the body) you may not want to drink vitamin water all day but its the best choice out there.

Vitamin Water was tasty to me, until I found out that crystalline fructose contains arsenic, chloride and lead. Not what I want to consume!

I just wanted to comment on the vitamin water. In Jan. I decided to lose some weight for my upcoming wedding, so I went from drinking soda to the vitamin water. I have to say I love the stuff, and 3 months later I have lost 30lbs. just by driking the vitamin water. Every one has different results, but this worked great for me!

I drink 4 bottles a day, great stuff. Lost weight to. Nothing anyone says will change the way I feel about VW.

vitamin water is great... not good for dieting but fantastic if you're running.

cheers Whatever and Apparition...! I agree that Vitamin Waters are good for you. I see no where on the bottles of Glaceau Witamin Waters that I purchase stating anything about being a diet drink or supplement of any kind...

I love vitamin water, if you move around a day you can burn off the calories. Also the sugar is alot better for you. It's not artifical. That's whats bad for you. Look at Soda, each serving is like 32gms. This sugar is sweeter and uses less and comes from plants. Also I discussed the sugar with Vitamin water. It does not contain Arcernic or Lead, that is just the codex for it. Basically what the government will allow, that doesn't mean it has it. They already assured me it doesn't have it, but there's alot of misinformation on the internet.

Stick to real water and get vitamins from real sources (fruits and vegetables) this stuff is junk.

DRINK WATER

EAT VITAMINS

it's that simple!

Ok, this is hilarious. There are some very interesting views, but I would like to say one thing. I am a person that drinks mostly water. Unless you are a person who eats only natural foods, the amount of sugar in this drink is nominal compared to the crap you are putting in your system from artificial ingredients in processed foods. So-unless you are completely free of these in your foods a little sugar doesn't really matter does it? I think you are all fooling yourselves when you make these assumptions. The only person I would listen to is the person who eats ALL naturally and then says even a little sugar is bad for you. That person knows what they are talking about. If you disagree, go look at the side of your processed food items in your pantry and if you can identify all of the items you are ingesting, let's discuss your opinion.

I got an e-mail today saying not to drink this stuff anymore cuz some lady died from it or something, it said it has antifreeze in it so people watch out

There's definitely a chain mail going around saying a woman died from drinking vitamin water but there also seems to be an article with a statement from her brother stating that there isn't even an investigation going on so there's no way they could've found the chemicals in her body and that the e-mail is definitely a rumor.

i dont think is a diet trash, i take it like a supplement as it has lots of vitamins, depends on what u need, couls have maybe more calories but is an alternative for others

people who sasy this is diet trash are full of it - of course it has sugar. Everything does. Just cut out the sugar of the foods you eat. Don;t drink kohii (?) Exercise more. Don't claim to be on a diet and gobble down sugary foods like an addict. Just get up off your butt and pick up some weights, run a little. Calories are UNITS OF HEAT. Sweat it out. I'm on the track team at my school and I drink vitamin water every day. I love the stuff. My weight is a constant 175 lbs (I'm made of muscle.) Only lazy people who sit on their butt all day long would complain about this.

People need to stop trashing on vitamin water, if you run and workout like myself you'd see the benefits of it, definitely makes you last longer during a routine, and it most certainly does not have antifreeze in it.

Whoa that antifreeze thing freaked me out because I drink vitamin water everyday, but I did some homework and find the article about it and can totally say that it's a rumor, I live off of vitamin water and I'm slim and in shape so don't hate on it.

Yeah the antifreeze thing is an urban legend but staying back on topic... it states the vitamin water has 125 calories? well let's see here vitamin water is for people who are in constant activity, of course it's bad for you if you're drinking it while sitting at home on your couch, but if you're exercising it's the perfect drink and you just burn off those extra calories.

I am obsesssssed with the kiwi strawberry vitamin water, I drink it during and after volleyball practice, it keeps me hydrated and refreshed and i've never had any problems from it.

This is the best! I love it because I hate coffee and Red Bulls make me jittery! I went to Haiti a few years ago and this taste just like the fresh juice they made for us every morning!!

I cannot belive vitamin water is not healthy...
This water helps me at work and recreation...
Its good and the flavours are terrific

I googled to find anything about side effect from drinking the Vitamin Water by Glaceau because I have been drinking it and wondered why I am so nauseated after just about 6 sips...so it is off my shopping list forever now - I knew there was nothing else that was causing it. Sorry, I really thought it would replace Snapple White Iced Tea, but guess I will go back to that because I cannot tolerate the terrible feeling in my stomach.....

Incorrect Posting - It's only 20 calories per serving. So at 2.5 servings, it's 50 calories total, for the bottle. This stuff is fantastic. You should remove your incorrect comments as soon as possible.

yea me 2 too about the stomach ache problem... i guess its with different people, but everytime i drink it I have diarrea. Ive been keeping track of what it could be that is causes this to happen and it all leads up to the dragon fruit vitamin water

I've had the Energy drink twice and both times had stomach issues shortly after. I think it's the guarana, which I just found out is caffeine. I drink decaf coffee because regular coffee upsets my stomach. Now I know what to stay away from.

First, instead of simply reading what people post about how bad fructose is, do some research. I went and read an article about why fructose was bad, then read more information about it; while yes, it can cause health problems so can ANYTHING you ingest an excessive amount of.
Think about fructose this way:
First – it is the third ingredient on the list, below cane sugar. This means that it is less or equal to the amount of cane sugar in one serving, therefore, 6.5g or less per serving depending on type, or 16.25g per bottle. Compare that to a regular apple (http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/fruits-and-fruit-juices/1809/2) which has 10.74g of fructose. How often do people claim that apples are terrible for you? Maybe they do, but I don’t see it very often.
Second – they add fructose because of its ability to sweeten with less. So you should thank Glaceau for finding and using a sugar that you need LESS of, or there could be a lot more calories in this drink. You might get the artificial sweetener taste because some sweeteners are derived from fructose.
I drink VW because I just don’t enjoy water; I really like flavor and it’s hard for me to even drink anything if all I have is water. VW is a great alternative for people who like to spice up their water to make it more enjoyable to drink it; that is the point of VW. They have a great sense of humor and if you actually read their website, they do provide information on all the vitamins included in their water, and it is very interesting to read.
Someone posted that this is a scam because you don’t need to extra vitamins – This drink is aimed at the average young American who, these days, doesn’t have the best diet. Enhancing a beverage to give more vitamins is not bad, you are not just “pissing away your money” … read this kid friendly article about fat storage and vitamin replacement. (http://kidshealth.org/kid/stay_healthy/food/vitamin.html) Not to mention, needing to use the bathroom often is GOOD; it means that your body is purifying and working correctly.

Vitamin Water vs. Pop!

When you are thirsty and need a drink, do you want carbonated pop or something subtle like water? How about finding something in the middle, like vitamin water? It’s healthy and has a lot of flavor.
To everyone who drinks pop, think about how unhealthy it is. Pop contains more sugar than cookies, candies, and ice cream combined. Drinking pop gives people sugar highs and false energy. Excessive calories can lead to people becoming over-weight, and all pops are loaded with them. Pop also contains caffeine, which can lead to caffeine dependency, and that is not a good problem to have. Aren’t there other products out there that are healthy for us to drink? Research shows there are.
Vitamin water on the other hand, is a completely healthy drink. It is perfect for people who do sports because it contains carbohydrates, which are great for energy. This water is also full of vitamins, like Vitamins C, B3, B6, B12, and B5. However, some would argue that most American adults are not vitamin deficient. This statement, however, does not include children and teenagers. Another fact shows that Americans consume less than half of the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), of vitamin E, which is one of the vitamins some Vitamin Water flavors contain.
People all over the world are becoming ill of vitamin deficiency. Drinking vitamin water instead of pop can only do one thing. That one thing would be that it helps save some of those lives. Vitamin water can never hurt someone that is vitamin deficient, it can only help them.
Pop may be an enjoyable drink but there are many negative nutritional contents. The people who want a healthier drink that will satisfy their thirst should buy vitamin water instead of pop.

Just thought I'd point out that not everyone drinks vitamin water for a diet. Personally, I drink vitamin water because it tastes good to me and I'm not a big fan of carbonated beverages.

Everybody who says VitaminWater is bad, get over yourselves. If you don't like it, don't drink it. Simple as that. I, personally, like VitaminWater. It tastes good, has vitamins (which are essential to living). So what if it has calories? If you don't ingest calories, you die. Believe it or not, calories are actually good for you. You just has to get off your butt and burn them off. It doesn't take much to burn off 125 calories. Even with jumping jacks, you can burn about 1 calorie every 5 or so jumping jacks. Do the math. You could burn off that 125 calories doing 25 jumping jacks. And the sugar, is just sugar. Crystaline, whatever. Who cares. It's sugar, people.

So drink a VitaminWater, do some jumping jacks, and live with some vitamins up your butt.

I thought I was the only one who felt sick after drinking it. I drank about 2 of the regular size bottles, one early in the afternoon and then another in the evening. Later that evening, I woke up and felt so sick. I dont think it was anything I ate because my mom said she had the same problem. Now that I'm reading that this has happened to other people I guess we can blame it on the water! haha. And it also makes me pee more often. It taste so good though.

im confused. Im not trying to loose weight just stay the same weight. I work out alot and im very active. Is it bad that i drink vit. water everyday?

Seriously, can't people just drink water? If you really dont want water, you dont need a big 20 oz drink. Just grab a capri-sun. Only 70 calories per pouch, AND is made with real sugar, not high fructose corn syrup. Or just some fruit juice. You are much better off with pure natural sugar than high fructose corn syrup, with the mercury tracings and being linked to type 2 diabetes.

I have had migraine headaches for a week. I even went to the doc. The only thing different this week from any other is that Im drinking one of the vitamin waters a day but I also take multivitamins. Im thinking vitamin B overload. No more for me. I hope that makes it stop. We shall see.

I would like to know,in what country Glacrau vitamin water in made?? It just says on the bottle that it is "made for the center for respoonsible hydration, Whitestone, Ny." OK, but where is it bottled. I hope it is in the U.S.A.

I too ran to the bathroom 2 hours after drinking the XXX flavored one. Strange.

From a health standpoint, VW contains: water, vitamins, and sugar. Most people try (or should) avoid sugar intake. The vitamins are common ones found in a LOT of foods so you're not really helping yourself here.

Your body only absorbs the minerals/vitamins it needs. ALL excess vitamin intake is literally passed through your urine as waste.

My advice is to stick to good ol H2O :)
If you're deficient in those vitamins... yer deficient in a LOT more so get a 1 a day vitamin supplement like Centrum, and skip the daily sugar VW offers :)

Vitamin water is a great soft drink indeed, but....

What really irritates me is the fact they try to make it look healthy!

Their health claims - on bottles and on the website - are, at least, not responsible.

Any dietary supplements with such claims would be banned by FDA.

What I have found about vitamin water is on a webpage here.

Be well,
Meir

I use to enjoy the energizing benefits of Vitamin Water, but in the last 6 months I have noticed that the Costco case of Vitamin water caused my sense of smell to change; it was hypersensitive.

The last straw was when I got nose bleeds which would only stop after a visit to the ER. When I stopped drinking Vitamin Water, the nose gushers stopped as well as the senstive sense of smell.

As an experiment I started to drink one bottle a day and low and behold a week later I had to rush off to the ER again.

There is something nasty in the Vitamin water which once discovered will lead to a major class action lawsuit against Vitamin Water.

Two weeks ago I spent all night running to the loo followed by three days of no appetite and hardly eating anything. Yesterday I finished the small amount of vitamin water I had in the fridge. This was left over from the day before I became ill. For the last two days I have had headaches, stomach pain and no appetite. I am so glad I have now put two and two together and this has brought me to this website. What's with this stuff. I certainly won't be buying it again. I thought it was healthy.

I have been drinking VW for over 8 years. I have never had any problems with it.

Anyone with any common sense will know that this is not a drink you substitute for water and if you think that you no longer have to eat healthy fruits and veggies than your just crazy

Take it for what it is worth. It is better then most other flavored drinks, soda and starbucks drinks.

Go take a look at your orange juice!! 110 calories per serving with over 22 grams of sugar.

So people you cant't eat a big mac and fries for lunch everyday and top it off with a vitamin water and think your going to be doing something good for your health and get thinner.

Being a couch potato and drinking VW doesn't do much good for the body.

Just use common sense people.

Oh and one more thing. If you can't handle the 50 calories per serving from the original flavors just stick to the Vitamin10 line. It only has 10 calories per serving and 3 grams of sugar.

Glaceu smartwater gives me a stomach ache EVERY time I drink it. I was drinking it every day and the doctor thought I had an ulcer. I laid off buying it, and my stomach pain went away. Anyone else have this??

My 17 yr old daughter was drinking VitaminWater with Guarana for about 2 months. She suffered many of the side effects listed for Guarana, but no where did she read any warning label. We even had to bring her to the emergency room one night because she thought she could not breeth. The Dr. said it was anxiety attacks. The same time she was suffering severe Ulcer like pains. We were going to take her to a Gastroenterologist, but as soon as she stopped the 2 bottles a day she was drinking, all her pains went away. There should be a class action suit to stop this. It probably could have killed her and may have the same effects on others.

There are studies for and against the health benefits of crystalline fructose.[2]

Crystalline fructose is generally considered safe, but concerns have been raised about health effects, particularly hepatotoxicity.[1] As of January 2010, the FDA has not designated crystalline fructose to be generally recognized as safe.[4]

Because crystalline fructose is sweeter than the sugars it replaces, less sugar can be used to produce a desired level of sweetness, resulting in fewer calories. For example, it can shave as many as 20 to 30 calories off a 12 oz. bottled drink.[citation needed]

While fructose does occur naturally in some foods, it is of important note that dietary fiber always accompanies, and thus deleterious effects are mitigated.[citation needed]

Of primary concern to some doctors who treat endocrinological disorders is the emergence of crystalline fructose in place of high-fructose corn syrup in beverages marketed with implied health benefits.

As these claims are spurious at best, any positive health benefit of crystalline fructose consumption is belied by underlying evidence-based science and fructose's causal relationship to hyperlipidemia, fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, coronary arterial disease and obesity.[citation needed]
