Blue Bunny Sweet Freedom Strawberry Lites Ice Cream Bar
Blue Bunny says, "Our creamy strawberry, light ice cream sweetened with Splenda comes dipped in a rich chocolate coating for a taste that's big on flavor yet lower in calories." I say, this ice cream bar tastes okay. The flavor I chose to try was Strawberry Lites and I got only a very faint hint of any strawberry flavor at all. If I hadn't read the description on the box, I would have thought that this was vanilla.
You can immediately tell it's not as sweet as regular ice cream bars, but it's still sweet enough. They are promoting the fact that they use Splenda as the sweetener, but sugar alcohols (4 grams in each bar) are also used. There is also a slight aftertaste, which is not really bitter, but more like an unpleasant intense concentration of sweet compounds that's left over on the back part of your tongue. I had to drink some fluids after eating this ice cream bar to get rid of the 'left over taste.'
This ice cream bar is also smaller than a regular sized ice cream bar - about one third the size. For example, one bar weighs 40 grams, but one bar of Blue Bunny's Orange Dream Bar [read the review] weighs 60 grams.
Nutritionally, one Blue Bunny Sweet Freedom Strawberry Lites Ice Cream Bar has 90 calories, 6 grams of total fat, 5 grams of which is saturated fat (26% of recommended) (no thanks), 2 grams of sugars and 4 grams of sugar alcohols (4 net carbs for those on low carb diets). BUT WAIT! The yummy Blue Bunny Orange Dream Bar is 1.5 times the size of this bar and only has 80 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, but 14 grams of sugars - which is not that much (much less than a can of soda).
So the Sweet Freedom bar is smaller, not great on taste, and is more calories than a bar 1.5 times it's size. The price is reasonable at $2.98 for a box of 12 bars, but I don't think I'll be buying this again. I think this is a viable option though if you are on a low carb diet and feeling for an ice cream bar.
