Dannon Activia Lowfat Yogurt

Dannon ActiviaAfter recently revieweing Breyers Light Probiotic Plus, here I am again, reviewing another yogurt product which contains "probiotics' or beneficial bacteria, but this time I enjoyed it much more. Hopefully everybody is well acquainted with the purported benefits of probiotics, which, according to Dannon "can help regulate your digestive system by helping reduce long intestinal transit time, when eaten daily for two weeks" (a fancy way of saying it makes you 'more regular'). Maybe the choice of a green color for the package was to promote this 'healthy' image, but that's just speculation on my part. Dannon Activia does not contain any artificial sweeteners, so it it's texture is thick, it's creamy, tastes sweet and delicious. I tried Mixed Berry, and there was plenty of fruit pieces in the yogurt.

Dannon Activia is made with reduced fat milk, so they managed to keep the fat content very low, 2 grams total and 1 gram saturated. Although they don't use alternative sweeteners, it does contain fructose syrup, and many people aren't a big fan of this. There are 17 grams of sugar in a 4 ounce container, which may seem a bit high to some, but this amount is not unusual. I think they might have been able to reduce it a bit though, since the yogurt is very sweet - but then again, my taste buds have gotten used to less sugar in my diet. There are also 110 calories per 4 oz cup, 5 grams of protein, and 15% of the RDA of calcium.

The 4 pack (with 4 oz containers) costs $1.93, but most other yogurts sell a 6 pack for the same price. (Don't you just love how instead of increasing the price, Dannon just makes a package with fewer numbers of individual packs. Check out Iniard's Watch for his take on this - he was not as amused as I was). Overall, I think this will make a great snack. It's healthy and good for you, and it doesn't sacrifice taste.

Hey, nice blog. It is a plus that they did not use artificial sweeteners like half their other varieties, even though I got some problems with the price increase through smaller serving sizes!! Thanks for the link, I've also added you to my short but growing list.... jude

Did you try it for two weeks? I am curious to see if it actually works. Maybe I'll do a two week project and see what happens to my bowels.

Be careful - I ate it for 3 days and woke up in the night with terrible stomach pain that lasted about six hours. Couldn't think of any other culprit. Wonder if anyone else had this experience?

I love this website. I'll add my 2 cents.

I bought this yogurt on recommendation that it tasted very good. I will agree, but this is coming from someone who has been eating lowfat, low sugar yogurts for many years.

If you're already "regular", I would not suggest this yogurt, as it had me going multiple times a day after only two days. Today, two days after my last serving (I only consumed 2 days' worth), I am still going and my stomach is cramping like I drank a gallon of milk (I'm lactose intolerant but have never had a problem with yogurt). I'd say it works well ...maybe too well. I still have 6 more left and will be spacing these out very judiciously.
It's definitely the gift that keeps on giving.

i like it. it works well. Its making me more regular , now after about 10 days. You have to deal with a little cramping ,but not too bad. I think it will subside in time. Overrall, a good product, I think!

I had to have an operation, I have IBS nothing worked. I had to wear a pad everyday. I have been on Activia for one month and it has cleared everything up. I never had stomach cramps or any side effects. This has saved my life. I still have to be careful of what I eat, but I feel free again to go out and enjoy myself.

Consumer Reports study says the bacteria do survive the trip through the stomach acids and through the bowels, making this hugely beneficial nutrition. I eat it twice every day and have absolutely no side effects. It's delicious and so nutritious. I've eaten yogurt for nutrition for 10 years, and this is better for us. I highly recommend Activia.
