Bananas

bananasBananas are sometimes misunderstood I think. Some people like them, some don't, but there's one thing I know for sure - it's probably the cheapest fruit in my grocery store. At about $0.49 per pound - you can get 5 for under $2.00. This means, there really is no excuse for not getting in at least one serving of fruit per day! You have to be careful with bananas though - they must be ripe - that goes without saying, but if you eat a banana thats bruised or has soft spots, that can totally turn you or your kids off 'nanas forever.

I usually eat one in the morning, but there are quite a few different ways to incorporate bananas into a meal. My favorite ways are in a homemade smoothie, because 'nanas adds thickness/body and in a fruit salad! (quick recipe: get fruits - slice/dice/chop - add a little fruit juice or yogurt if you want some zing!). But what's so good about 'nanas? One medium banana has approximately 110 calories, 4 grams fiber, 21 grams sugar, 2 mg of sodium, 400 mg potassium (11%), 15% vitamin C, and 20% vitamin B6.

Did you know we eat green (unripe) bananas in the Caribbean. We peel off the skin and then boil the bananas until they are soft - delicious! Did you also know that there are different types of bananas. in Jamaica, in addition to the regular 'nanas, there's also the "honey banana." I'm sure that's not the correct name, but it was smaller in length, and tasted sweeter. I've seen it occasionally here in the US.

I have been looking all over the web (and bookstores) for the calories in boiled green bananas. One of my searches led me to your site and I was hoping you might have some leads! I love my caribbean food but have no idea how to calculate the calories!
Thanks!

Bananas have been eaten people since the beginning of time. It will always be healthy. I was wondering though, are green bananas healthier than yellow ones?
