Snackwell's Sugar Free Oreo Cookies

Snackwell's OreosThe first thing that actually drew my attention to these cookies was the fact that on the box, it says, "Sugar Free, Not for Weight Control ..." I found it amusing that this needed to be written on the packaging, but I can certainly understand it, what with all the lawsuits against food companies these days. In fact, I think the name of this product might be "Sugar Free Not For Weight Control Snackwell's Oreo Chocolate Sandwich Cookies" since that appears on the box at least three times. That was a mouthful.

If you compare these cookies to regular Oreos, then I think the regular Oreos will definitely come out on top. But I thought the sugar free Oreos did a decent job in standing up to it's big brother in terms of taste. The outer cookie part of the sugar free version is much crisper and less sweet, but the creamy center tastes about the same as the regular ones in my opinion. Put the entire sugar free Oreo in your mouth, and you can definitely tell the difference between this sugar free version, and the regular, but I think this is definitely worthy of a try.

One thing that I wasn't too pleased about is that 2 cookies, is 1 serving and equal to 100 calories. Now, I'm not a big cookie fan myself, but I don't know too many people that are going to just eat 2 cookies and be satisfied. Well, I know a few, but just make note of this. In addition, 2 cookies have 5 grams of fat, 1.5 grams saturated fat, no trans fat, no sugar, and 7 grams of sugar alcohols - with the warning *excess consumption (of sugar alcohols) may have a laxative effect. Usually about 4 - 8 grams of sugar alcohols will do me in, but different people have different tolerance levels. This product also has artificial sweeteners (acesulfame K and sucralose). I'm not big on sweets, so I may not be purchasing this again myself, but I think it's an excellent choice for diabetics but not really for kids, since I think they would want more than 2 cookies, and then the sugar alcohols will probably give them diarrhea.

I believe the label on the sugar free oreos says 24 to a pkg, 8 servings, which makes it 3 cookies per serving, not 2.

Ignore my last comment. the "nutrition" facts on the Nabisco webside said 24 grams, not 24 cookies in a package. One wonders why they would not say how many cookies in a package, as how would one know how much each cookie weighs. Typical trying to confuse consumer. I won't be buying them. Thank you.

The reason they probably say not for weight control is because they have the EXACT SAME NUMBER OF CALORIES as regular Oreos. And unless you're diabetic I can't imagine WHY you would CHOOSE sugar free oreos over regular oreos unless you're trying to avoid sugar for some reason or high fructose corn syrup, but then you're getting all that processed fake sugar crap for the exact same number of calories. They are certainly NOT a "healthy" food and I wouldn't even call them health'IER' than regular Oreos, either. To get a healthIER Oreo-type cookie, I would suggest Newman's Own Organics Creme Cookies which look and taste like Oreos. Unfortunately they actually have slightly more calories per serving, but they ARE more natural and BETTER (although still not "good") for you. And a serving size for all Oreo type cookies I've ever seen IS two cookies.

Maybe you could try cumbling one cookie over a cup of good-for-you yogurt. Fat-free vanilla Stoneyfield Farms yogurt mixed with one crumbed oreo = 160 calories, 2 grams of fat, good-for-you bacteria, 1 serving of dairy/calcium, good source of protein, etc. ::shrugs shoulders:: Good luck!

What in God's name is a registered dietician? That is like saying, "I'm a registered psychic."
