Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Cherry Cereal Bar

Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Cherry Cereal BarI searched high and low for the definition of cereal bar. I mean, just what exactly makes something a cereal bar? I always assumed that it was the snack bar version of a cereal that already existed. If there was no cereal, then it should be called a snack bar. Am I wrong? Does anybody know, because this is driving me crazy?! I started thinking about this as I prepared to do the review of Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Cereal Bar. I don't think there is a Nutri-Grain cereal (and somebody please correct me if I'm wrong), so why is this called a cereal bar? But lets get on with the review.

I tried the Cherry flavor, and the first thing I noticed was that this bar was very soft, like a Fig Newton texture, which is not typical of most bars. It also had an ever so slight pasty off taste, but there was plenty of cherry filling, which wasn't too soft and messy, which is what I expected. Overall, the taste was okay, but most of the other cereal bars out there taste better in my opinion.

Maybe it's the nutrition that might keep people coming back for more, so I checked that out thoroughly. The label says this is low-fat, and it only has 3 grams of fat per bar. In addition, there are 140 calories, 14 grams of sugar, and 10-25% of quite a few vitamins and minerals. Not bad, but that's more sugar than some of the other cereal bars that we have reviewed, like Honey Bunches of Oats Low-fat Cereal Bar. I was also surprised that there was only 1 gram of fiber in this. I mean, this product has the word Grain in it's name, and we know grains = fiber, so what happened? I searched the ingredients list for answers. The filling ingredients read high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, cherry puree concentrate, glycerin, sugar... The crust is made from enriched flour, whole grain oats, sugar, sunflower oil and high fructose corn syrup. Sounds like sugar, sugar, and more sugar, with a little bit of oats.

A box with 8 costs $2.50, so this is a good deal economically, but it could do with a little sugar reduction, and you have to like the softer texture type cereal bars to really enjoy this, and unfortunately, I don't.
