Amy's Kitchen Stuffed Pasta Shells Bowl

Amy's Kitchen PastaIt's not often that I've found many pasta products that are really all that good once they've come out of the microwave, and typically avoid them for that reason. Usually they end up either all tough and chewy or mushy. As I've had really good results with Amy's products, I decided to try and overcome my fears and give it a shot, and I was duly rewarded.

After following the easy directions, the pasta came out of the microwave steaming hot and perfectly done. That alone was enough to impress me! The filling, while having some cooler spots, was delicious and perfectly seasoned. And I'm willing to concede that cool spots in the filling could have been due to my second-hand $12 thrift store microwave. Eh, it happens. The sauce was very tasty, both by itself and when eaten with the pasta and cheese. This offering is not something that should be considered for a 'light snack' by any means. This is DINNER.

Of course as with all of Amy's Kitchen offerings, there are no GMO's or bizarre genetically monsterized, bioengineered ingredients, and there are no lists of chemicals that rival the average bottle of paint stripper. Everything is regular, good food ingredients, most of which have the word ORGANIC in front of them. This has real cheeses, real milk and real butter in it, and is not a vegan meal by any means.

Everything was so wonderful, but as I turned to the nutrition label, I was a bit disappointed. One entree has 310 calories and 19 grams of protein, which is not bad at all for dinner - but 120 calories are from the 13 grams of fat and 7 grams of saturated fat (34% of the daily value)! While this may seem high (and indeed it is), take a good look through the freezer section at some similar products from "regular food companies" and you'll see this is quite an improvement. And, it has NO trans-fat. There are also 710 mg of sodium (31% of the daily value).

This was also a bit pricey of a meal in comparison to other frozen entrees, but there again, when you consider the health factor of organic foods, and no nasty chemicals, I feel it was worth it. It also costs less for this really fancy entree then your average dinner of something much less wholesome or tasty, say at some local fast food eatery. Sure, I would love to see a vegan alternative, though, one that uses soy alternatives for the milk, cheeses, etc. but I will also admit that it probably just wouldn't be as good as this was. Thumbs up again to the Amy's folks!

I've had Amy's products before too, and I agree that they are actually pretty tasty. I'm not an organic-only person or anything, so I only buy them when they are on sale, which is actually pretty often at my local market (I don't think they are all that popular).

I never looked at the health labels though, interesting that they aren't super-healthy numbers-wise. Maybe that's how they taste so good?

This is one helluva frozen dish. I, like the original reviewer, tend to believe that pasta, rice, and similar items should *never* be frozen. I was more than pleasantly surprised by Amy's Kitchen Stuffed Pasta Shells Bowl, though, which tasted better than the last time I cooked up some dried cheese ravioli and fresh red sauce. Yum!
