Tofurky - Cranberry & Stuffing Deli Slices

tofurkey This is a very interesting offering by the folks at Turtle Island Foods, with a cool and quirky name. Gotta love THAT. This is a meat-alternative to turkey products, and it comes in a number of different flavor combinations, including the one I've reviewed here, plus Hickory Smoked, and Roasted Turkey flavor.

Aesthetically, it's not a pretty sight. It's brown-grey with flecks and spots from the seasoning mix and the cranberries, and the texture is reminiscent of a cross between balloon rubber and soft shoe leather. Yick! That being said, the taste is much more pleasing than would be expected from looking at it, and believe it or not, it kinda DID taste like cranberries and dressing! I found this was better as a cold cut than in anything warm, as the flavors did not respond well to heat. My favorite use for this was to simply put it in some dark rye, with a good fresh tomato slice, and some organic vegetarian mayo. Also good-in-flavor is the hickory smoked version of this.

In one 5.5 oz package, there are three servings, 3 slices per serving. Nutritionally speaking, this is some pretty good stuff, although it is rather high in ). One serving is 3g of fat, with no saturated fat, and presumably no trans fats since it's made from organic tofu, and 368 mg sodium. One of the first ingredients on the list, however, is wheat protein, (that's gluten to you and me!), so if you are gluten sensitive, this product's not for you, sorry. It does, however, have 11 grams of protein per serving, and 8g of carbohydrate. Not bad for a "sammich meat."

Typically, Tofurky around here costs over $3 per package, NOT the best value. But I found some on sale once for about $2, and wasn't too upset about paying that, considering the convenience. Overall, if you're in a hurry, need some fast protein, have the extra bucks, and and some good flavor, this is a good product. But I only buy it when it's on sale.
