Coke: Diet Coke with Splenda
So the rumor mill was true - Coca-Cola has reformulated and come out with Coke with Splenda - hereafter referred to as Splenda Coke. This actually tastes a lot better than regular Diet Coke (which is sweetened with aspartame), but it's still not that great. Splenda Coke tastes like sweetened carbonated water meaning it has a watered down sweet taste, but with all the different flavors of diet coke available, I'm sure there must be one that each and every person will like. Obviously Splenda Coke uses Splenda as a sweetener, but it still also uses acesulfame K (potassium). Why give all the love to Splenda but not Acesulfame K, which is also a high intensity sweetener (about 200 times sucrose) - known by the brand name Sunnett, Sweet One and Sweet n' Safe.
It is rumored that CocaCola will be coming out with Coca-Cola Zero in June (no longer rumors: read the review here). I'm not sure what's the point of having Diet Coke (sweetened with aspartame), Diet Coke sweetened with Splenda, and Coca-Cola Zero (sweetened with aspartame and acesulfame K) - I mean, they all have zero calories. Well, the press release shed some light on the reasons. It seems "Coca-Cola Zero is exactly what young adults told us they wanted - real Coca-Cola taste, zero calories and a new brand they can call their own," said Dan Dillon, vice president, Diet Portfolio, Coca-Cola North America ... and "we think Coca-Cola Zero's taste and personality will appeal to them." So basically, what I am getting from this, is that Coca-Cola Zero will be for "young adults." It is made for them and is not geared towards us "not so young adults." So I guess I will stick with Caffeine-free Diet Coke. I hope that's geared towards me.
