SaraLee Heart Healthy 100% Multi-Grain Bread
These days, white enriched bread is taking a beating. Everybody thinks it makes you fat, and we are seeing as increase in consumption of "whole wheat" bread, which has a similar amount of nutrients available naturally. However, if you are used to eating white bread, the taste of whole wheat takes some getting used to. The texture is quite different. This '100% multi-grain bread' is made with honey. I don't know if that makes a difference in the taste or not, but could I taste the honey? No, but it did have a slightly sweet taste to it. I think the sweetness comes less from the honey and more from the high fructose corn syrup which is listed as the second ingredient and incidentally, honey is in the 'contains less than 2%' list.
The texture was soft , which I believe comes from the use of softeners which include mono- and diglycerides, a.k.a. fat. Therefore, in one slice of bread, there are 1.5 g fat, also 110 calories (normal for most breads), 3 g sugar and 5 g fiber. This product says 'no artificial flavors or colors' but it does have preservatives in the ingredients list. So if this sort of thing is important to you - take note - 'no artificial flavors or colors' does not mean 'no preservatives.'
This bread was priced right around $2.00 or about twice the price of plain store brand whole wheat bread. Was it worth the extra cost? I believe so, but I would probably go with a cheaper brand without all the extra - honey, sugar, and calories. When toasted I believe they all taste the same anyway.
