Terra Exotic Vegetable Chips

terra chips Do not expect the thin, oily potato chips that we all know and love. Instead Terra Exotic Vegetable Chips were thicker, sturdy, colorful, crunchy and very very good. They have a slightly sweet flavor and that's because these chips are made from root vegetables such as sweet potato, taro (what we call dasheen in Jamaica), yuca (also called cassava), batata and parsnip. These root veggies are very popular in the Caribbean and Latin America but I don't think they are well known to most Americans, but I assure you that this combination is a winning recipe. They also use beet juice to color some of the chips, so you get an interesting visual appeal along with the 'exotic' taste, which makes them great for serving at get-togethers.

Nutritionally speaking, this product is just a little better than regular potato chips, with 150 calories per 1 ounce serving of 14 chips, 8 grams of fat but only 0.5 grams are from saturated fat since they use vegetable oil, and a low 35 mg of sodium. (Lays Classic Potato Chips has 150 calories, 10 grams of fat (15% of the recommended daily amount and 1 gram of saturated fat, which is 5% of the RDA).

There is however, something about the taste of these chips though that will stop you from eating more than one serving in one sitting. It gets a little 'too much' after a while - so I don't think you'll finish the entire bag while watching a flick on the tele.

Terra Chips can be purchased online at Amazon.com at $16.99 for a pack of 24, which is a very reasonable price. Overall, these are great for the times when you have guests over and you want to use some fancy looking chips. I like the exoticness of them and will buy them again just to add a little variety - but not for any nutritional benefit.

Too much fat for my blood. If I'm gonna have that much fat, it's gonna be chocolate.

Why oh why are they taking away olestra chips? I hate that center for science in the public interest. That guy outta be hung. I loved olean chips - the taste of chips with no fat guilt. And as long as you didn't eat too many, no problems.
