Ruffles has renamed their WOW line of fat free chips to Ruffles Light, complete with new packaging, so it looks like a new product. The oil that the chips are fried in, is replaced by Olestra, a fat substitute. Olestra has been linked with more than 20,000 reported cases of diarrhea or stomach upset. I tried the Cheddar and Sour Cream flavor. One serving, about 15 chips, has 75 calories, half that of regular chips. Aside for the concern about Olestra, these fat free chips looked and tasted similar to the real thing. Good! Guilt free chips? Possible, but ask yourself, how many servings are you eating when you dig into that bag? They are still pricier than regular chips, at approximately $2.50 for a 10 oz bag. I thought these chips were great, and I personally didn't experience any stomach upset, but then again, I didn't have more than 1 serving at the time of writing this article.
