Food Notes
Inside the Opening of Otarian, the World's First Low Carbon Restaurant

Here at Iateapie.net, we normally write review of food products with nutritional claims, but I'm also very into healthy cooking & eating. I was invited to attend a cocktail reception (last night, April 14, 2010), for the opening of Otarian, the World's first "low carbon" (vegetarian) restaurant chain (opening at 154 Bleecker St., NY), and the concept was just fascinating to me. So I went to sample the menu and hobnob with lots of press people taking pictures of the celebrities that attended the event (notice I didn't say I got to hobnob with the celebs)! It was funny because my friend and I were busy trying to take pictures of the food, and most everyone else was taking pictures of the celebs.

At Otarian, everything they serve is grown, sourced and gathered to make the least possible impact on the planet. This means that they are 100% committed to having a low carbon footprint - from the interior decor - where everything is made from recycled materials - to the waste (food & packaging), which can all be composted or recycled.
And the food?! Well, the food was AHHH-MAZING! it's going to be a fast-food type restaurant. Everything I sampled was delicious - vegetarian food done right is what I say (and I'm not vegetarian)! The burgers - oh the burgers - totally delightful. I tried the Portobello Mushroom and Tex-Mex Burgers - so insanely good!

Spiced Coconut Curry Lime Rice

Roasted Vegetable Lasagna

Red Curry Noodles

Panna Cotta

Those were just a FEW of the dishes passed around! The food was incredible, the restaurant's mission is admirable, and I think a good night was had by all (and there were a LOT of people there) ... who're we kidding - we totally took photos of the celebs too.
Vanessa Williams (Ugly Betty)

Judah Friedlander (30 Rock)

Otarian owner Radhika Oswal

And the Olsen Twins were in the house but I didn't see one or the other. But more importantly, I met 2 other food bloggers when we shared a car - Jessica of Food Mayhem and Amy of Amy Blogs Chow - check 'em out!
