Food & Health Ratings in Consumer Reports February Edition

ConsumerReports.org is published by Consumers Union (CU) which is an expert, independent, nonprofit organization whose mission is to work for a fair, just, and safe marketplace for all consumers and to empower consumers to protect themselves. Here's an excerpt of food & health related articles from ConsumerReports.org February edition.

  • Dip, Dip Horray.

Consumer Reports nutrition staff rated the nutrition of 48 dips, including con queso and creamy types, guacamole, hummus, and salsa. Top-rated Cedar's Roasted Red Pepper Hommus provides 50 calories per 2 tablespoon serving, is relatively low in sodium, has little saturated fat, and has 3 grams of fiber, more than any of the other dips we assessed.

Iateapie.net favorites, Sabra Roasted Red Pepper Hummus and Wholly Guacamole also made the Top 10.

  • Scales: Digital Beats Analog. Consumer Reoprts tested and rated the accuracy of 11 bathroom scales, comparing digital scales to scales with dials. They found that top four scales were accurate within plus or minus 1 pound from 97 to 100 percent of the time.

The Taylor dial scale was accurate to that degree just 13% of the time! All scales were at least good at repeating the weight they'd measured. As it turns out, the low-rated Taylor stuck to its guns, consistently repeating a weight that was off. Interestingly enough, a Taylor digital scale was in the Top 10 - along with a Weight Watcher's scale ... I had no clue there was such a thing, but apparently, there is (and it can be found at Amazon.com).
