Jenny-O Homestyle Turkey Meatballs

Meatballs are a favorite, quick convenience food that I usually keep in the freezer for busy days. But, making a huge batch, cooking, and freezing them ... it's tiring just thinking about it! And while convenient as well as making fantastic appetizers and meal starters, they can be extremely high in fat. Since Jenny-O Homestyle Turkey Meatballs boasts 45% less fat per serving than the leading meatballs, and they're pre-cooked, so I decided to test them.
While spaghetti and meatballs is what comes to mind when I say "meatball", they are many different ways to incorporate them in a meal. I thought that a mushroom sauce would be more complimentary, so I made a quick sauce, added the meatballs. I have to say, these are pretty good little suckers! They're juicy and even have that rustic texture that a pork meatball would. While I wouldn't call their flavor very potent, it's neutral enough to assimilate into most applications.

Even though I am by no means a vegetarian, I have never really liked the taste of beef. Add in the nutritional nightmare that most hamburgers are, and I am usually not the life of the cookout (plain grilled chicken gets pretty boring after awhile). Since Jennie-O ground turkey hasn't failed me in the past, I decided to try their Savory Seasoned Turkey Burgers when I came across them in the store.
The savory seasoned burgers come frozen and are seasoned with diced tomatoes, bell peppers, cheese and spices. Overall, I was pretty impressed. Each patty is equivalent in size to a normal burger although slightly thinner, and the flavor really caught my attention. Unlike most turkey burgers, these had a nice tangy flavor that stood well on it's own. Believe it or not, an accompaniment of cheese was not necessary. This was however, slightly dry in comparison to a beef patty, but a small squirt of mustard cured that right away.

I don't make too many sandwiches, but since I had a coupon for a FREE package of Healthy Ones Deli Meats, I had to try them out. The coupon entitled me to up to $3.99 worth of sliced deli products, so I marched right up to that section to make my selection. I vacillated between the turkey and the chicken (I don't really like ham), and finally settled on the Healthy Ones Deli Thin-Sliced Oven Roasted Turkey Breast.

I first examined the package to check out the turkey's health claims. I saw 97% fat free, no fillers, and zero artificial flavors, plus, the brand carries the American Heart Association seal of approval for saturated fat and cholesterol levels. Sounds good to me! I flipped over the package to look at the nutritional stats, and saw that a 4-slice serving (2/5th of the package) provides a wee 60 calories. That also comes with 1.5 grams of fat, 0.5 grams of saturated fat, 25 mg of cholesterol (8% of the RDA), 440 mg of sodium (18% of the RDA), and 10 grams of protein. That's a little high in the sodium department, but this is deli meat, after all.

There are days when I enjoy cooking a full blown breakfast complete with toast, scrambled eggs and sausage. I was in one of those moods when I spotted Banquet Brown 'N Serve Turkey Sausage Links with a very reasonable price tag of $0.79 per box of 10. Do you know the old saying, you get what you pay for?! Well, this product is the embodiment of that term.
The first thing that I noticed when I opened the box was the diminutive size of the links. Each link is only about 2 inches long. I decided to brown the sausage in a skillet rather than microwave it, and I must say, it did brown pretty well. Unfortunately, the taste and the texture left much to be desired. It appears as if the good folks at Banquet/ Con Agra simply formed their bulk sausage into links, rather than stuff it in a proper casing. This made the texture is downright mealy. I was also expecting more spice - no taste of pepper, sage, fennel or anything else except salt, which is there in abundance. I also noticed that I could actually press grease out of these which surprised me, as poultry sausages are usually quite lean.

Since consumers have started demanding healthier options food companies have begun trimming the fat (pun intended) and slashing calories. Bacon is one of the foods that's slowly getting a makeover as a result. Most brands are no longer the fat laden, artery clogging food that it once was - but it is hard to maintain that delicious salty flavor and smokiness which make it irresistible. Thankfully, Jennie-O Extra Lean Turkey Bacon has given us the best of both worlds: a great bacon flavor with a fraction of the calories and fat.
If you like crispy bacon make sure to microwave this, as cooking it on the griddle results in more of a beef jerky like texture. Cooked in the microwave, the bacon comes out pleasantly crisp and crunchy, with no greasiness whatsoever. It has the usual salty taste, though it's not overpowering, like a good uncured bacon should be. While this does lack the smokiness of most of the pork bacons that I've eaten, I'm more than willing to overlook it for the calories saved.

Michelina's Gourmet meals are consistently two things: cheap (each meal costs around $1.00) and smaller than most other frozen dinners. I've had some good ones (Michelinas Lean Gourmet Vegetable Rice Pilaf), and some bad ones (Michelinas Lean Gourmet Rotini with Prosciutto and Basil), so on my last trip to the grocery store, I stocked up on a few that I hadn't tried before.
Michelina's Lean Gourmet Roasted Turkey frozen dinner uses a "chef inspired" recipe, and I would really like to know which chef inspired this mess. This meal is salty, salty and ... did I mention Salty?! 35% of the RDA for sodium in a package that's smaller than most others brands (8 compared to 10-12 ounces usually). Now I love salty foods probably more than the average person (I'm working on it), but even I have to admit that this meal just went overboard. I could feel my blood pressure rising and the beginnings of a headache within minutes of consumption (okay the blood pressure rising is a bit of an exaggeration).
Other than the intense saltiness - as I mentioned before - it's small. There are exactly 4 pieces of turkey and the mashed potatoes are so mushy it's almost soup-like. This is definitely not one of the better Michelina's meals.

This is a very interesting offering by the folks at Turtle Island Foods, with a cool and quirky name. Gotta love THAT. This is a meat-alternative to turkey products, and it comes in a number of different flavor combinations, including the one I've reviewed here, plus Hickory Smoked, and Roasted Turkey flavor.
Aesthetically, it's not a pretty sight. It's brown-grey with flecks and spots from the seasoning mix and the cranberries, and the texture is reminiscent of a cross between balloon rubber and soft shoe leather. Yick! That being said, the taste is much more pleasing than would be expected from looking at it, and believe it or not, it kinda DID taste like cranberries and dressing! I found this was better as a cold cut than in anything warm, as the flavors did not respond well to heat. My favorite use for this was to simply put it in some dark rye, with a good fresh tomato slice, and some organic vegetarian mayo. Also good-in-flavor is the hickory smoked version of this.

When did ready-to-eat-meals stop tasting yucky? Nobody sent me the memo, but apparently Healthy Choice got it, because their Slow Roasted Turkey Breast & Mashed Potatoes is good. The mashed potatoes tasted like mashed potatoes, and not the fake flakes they sell - I have a thing against 'potato flakes' that you boil to get mashed potatoes - nasty tasting stuff! But back to my review. The turkey was good, and so was the gravy. My only complaint would be that there was a whole lot of gravy - could cut out some calories and salt by reducing it a little.
