WestSoy Soy Slender

West Soy Soy SlenderGone are the days of only finding soy milk only in specialty stores. Now even my 'mom and pop' grocer carries the stuff. Recently I saw WestSoy Soy Slender on a buy one get one free sale, so I grabbed both the Chocolate and Vanilla flavors to try.

I was actually quite pleased with them both. The vanilla was nice and creamy and the chocolate had a very real chocolate taste. Both flavors were sweet enough for my liking (thanks to sucralose). Wondering what makes this soy milk so 'slender'? Well the nutritional stats are pretty impressive. One 8 oz glass (for both flavors) provides only 70 calories - but Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Unsweetened Chocolate Almond Milk provides only 45 calories per cup. Still, they are both less than half the calories of "regular" chocolate milks that we're used to, like Organic Valley Reduced Fat Chocolate Milk which has 170 calories per cup.

South Beach Living Snack Pack Delights Dark Chocolate Covered Soynuts

South Beach Living Snack Pack Delights Dark Chocolate Covered Soynuts I was in the grocery store in California picking up some staples when I saw South Beach Living Snack Pack Delights Dark Chocolate Covered Soynuts sitting inconspicuously on the shelf. No sooner had I spotted it than it found its way into my basket as I'm a big fan of South Beach Living products (their nutrition bars and frozen meals are pretty good).

As you might expect from 100 calorie pouches of chocolate and nuts, these packs are small; each contains a 2/3 ounce serving of the snack. Size aside, this snack is fantastic. The dark chocolate is smooth and flavorful, and the nuts are crunchy and pair perfectly with the chocolate.

Landgarten Organic Snack Mix

Landgarten Organic Snack MixI have never been a huge fan of nuts and seeds, but for lunch today, I was having homemade tomato-chickpea soup, and to supplement it I headed to Food Emporium in search of a portion-controlled bag of nuts (let's face it, if I got one of those giant tubs I'd be munching away and soon eat the whole thing). In the nut section, I came across Landgarten Organic Snack Mix, which looked like a good fit for my needs.

The description says that this Landgarten Snack Mix is Gluten Free and consists of roasted soy beans, Styrian pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds - all lightly salted in sea salt. This mix is rich in soy protein (Isoflavones), omega 6 essential fatty acids and fiber. That sounded like exactly what I was looking for, and I thought the flavors would go well with the garlic, cumin, and coriander I had thrown into my soup.

I paid the hefty $3.99 bill for a 59 gram pack (granted, I am in New York City, but that's still a lot for one serving of snack mix) and rushed back up to my desk to dig in. Mmmm, tasty! Even though the description says "lightly salted", they tasted very salty to me (in a good way), but the salt didn't overpower the flavor of the beans and seeds. The pumpkin seed flavor was a little stronger than that of the sunflower seeds or soy beans, but I liked it - it gave the mix an earthy flavor that was delicious. I tried adding some to my soup, and that was good too, but I decided the flavor and texture was too good to waste by diluting it with soup.

Odwalla Super Protein MatchaLicious Drink

Odwalla Matchalicious Super Protein DrinkIf you've ever wanted to know what real, unaltered soy milk tastes like, then look no further than Odwalla Super Protein Matcha-Licious. Odwalla didn't bother trying to get rid of the naturally beany taste of soy milk. Instead they chose to embrace it in a "close to Mother Earth" organic kind of way. Plus they added "matcha" which is another name for ground green tea leaves - more proof that this drink is probably as close as you will ever get to grinding up and milking plants.

I'll be honest and say that I drank just a few mouthfuls before I tossed this. To put it simply - this is just gross. There is an overwhelming green, grassy taste and aroma. I'm willing to sacrifice some taste in order to eat more nutritiously, but there are only 10 grams of protein per serving in this. That amount is readily available in meat (chicken or tuna) or beans - "super protein" they say - I think not!

Silk Live Key Lime Soy Yogurt

Silk Live Soy YogurtForget any stereotypes that you might have about the taste of soy products because Silk Live Key Lime Soy Yogurt tastes just like it's dairy cousins. I detected no beany soy taste or off flavors at all. Silk has been in business a long time, and I think they have now pretty much perfected the art of making "regular tasting" soy products.

Hopefully you have already experienced the nirvana that is a well made Key Lime Pie, so you know what to expect. The green picture on the label, and my association of the color green with the word "lime" actually led me to believe that this yogurt would be ... green. But, it wasn't. The color was actually a light brown, "yogurt might have gone bad" kind of color. But I still went ahead and had a spoonful and I'm glad I did. There is a definite yummy key lime flavor - tart and sweet at the same time, although more on the tart side.

ZenSoy Chocolate Soy Pudding

Pudding is not something that I usually reach for in the supermarket, but something about the ZenSoy product caught my eye. I think it was the fact that it was certified organic, gluten free, lactose free AND vegan - something that almost everybody and their kids can eat. But it might also have been the Panda featured on the package, who on close inspection appears to be eating the pudding.

My gripe with pudding is that I don't enjoy the thick consistency. Thankfully, while ZenSoy Chocolate Soy Pudding is not too thick! I think they have a formula that pleases even my pickiness, but can still be enjoyed by all the puddin' lovin' people out there. I wouldn't have been able to tell that this wasn't a milk based product, or that it was made from soy. It has a dark rich chocolatey brown color, is creamy and smooth but with more of a sweet taste than a chocolate flavor. There is no aftertaste and no beany soy taste. My only complaint would be that this is a bit too sweet for my liking.

Amys Macaroni and Soy Cheeze

Amys Macaroni and Soy CheezeIn Ann's glowing review of Lean Cuisine Butternut Squash Ravioli yesterday [read the review], she mentioned that Amy's Macaroni and Soy Cheeze so I decided to grab a box and try it at lunch.

I love Amy's but I can't share Ann's enthusiasm for this one. I thought it was just okay. The soy cheeze tasted similar to the regular, goopy processed cheese that you find in most macaroni meals. Does anybody really eat plain macaroni and cheese anyway? I'm not a macaroni and cheese person, so it might just be me, but while I was eating this, I thought it needed some meat (or fake veggie meat) or something else to kick this meal up a notch. Again, I might be wrong and it might just be me, but there is no way that I would pay $2.95 for just plain macaroni and cheese - no matter how good it tastes (and this is not that good) and lactose intolerant or not! Over at Heat Eat Review, they thought there was an aftertaste [read their review] and gave it 3 stars.

Purely Decadent Dairy Free Cherry Nirvana Ice Cream

Turtle Mountain Soy Delicious Attention foodies: I have found THE most scrumptious, heavenly, not-so-bad for you, dessert on the planet! Drum roll please... Turtle Mountain Purely Decadent Soy Delicious non-dairy frozen dessert in Cherry Nirvana (Whew, that is a title)! In other words, it's soy ice cream, but believe me, this stuff hasn't the faintest taste of soy.

I was a little nervous about what to expect appearance-wise upon opening the carton; Would it be smelly like some soy-based products? Would it even remotely resemble ice cream? I was quite surprised to find that the Purely Decadent looked exactly like ice cream! And a GOOD quality ice cream at that - none of those annoying little hard ice crystals or anything on top.

I measured out the 1/2 cup serving (100g) on my kitchen scale because I wanted to accurately gauge the nutrition value and how satisfied I would feel with the recommended serving. As I sat down on my couch Indian style (because really I think this is the ONLY way to truly enjoy ice cream!) and dug in...I swear I could have melted right there into a little pool of bliss and died a happy woman! Whoever named this product "Cherry Nirvana" should be given a marketer's star of honor for actually giving consumers an ACCURATE description of the product, because there was a smorgasbord of glistening, plump black cherries everywhere! There are also rich chocolate flecks throughout and the black cherries just burst in my mouth with juiciness! How, HOW I ask myself did the geniuses at Turtle Mountain keep these cherries from turning into hard frozen rocks???

WholeSoy Chocolate Hazelnut Frozen Cultured Soy

icecreamWholeSoy Frozen Cultured Soy was found in the ice cream section, so I'm guessing it is supposed to be a 'dairy free' ice cream alternative. I tried the chocolate hazelnut flavor which looked chocolatey (meaning it was brown), but as for the taste ... there was a sweet chocolate taste at first, which was overpowered soon after by a strong 'beany' aftertaste, characterisitic of soy. The unwanted taste lingers in your mouth for quite a while, forcing you to re-live the awful after effects again and again. Lets just say that this did not taste even remotely close to ice cream. I'm really not sure where the hazelnut flavor came in, but I'm thinking adding soybeans and hazelnut flavor together in one product may NOT be a good combination. I'll pass on this product based on the taste alone.

Silk Live Mango Smoothie

smoothieSilk Live! is a "live cultured" soy smoothie, which basically means that there are living, breathing, thriving bacteria in it. I'm sure this is true of a few other beverages and all yogurts, but since when did "we are chock full of bacteria" become a selling point for a food product? Nevertheless, the marketing geniuses at this company convinced the big wigs that splashing this little bit of info all over the front of the bottle would sell products, and here I am proving them right by buying it.

The main question on my mind prior to tasting this product was, "Does it have a mango taste?" And the answer to that proved to be, "Yes, albeit like a 'bitter mango instead of a sweet mango' taste." To say that I liked this product might be an overstatement. Soy smoothies are definitely an acquired taste. You will either like/tolerate it or absolutely hate them. Really, we all hate them at first, but as you diet and your taste buds become numb due to bad tasting no carb products and tasteless fat free products, then the soy 'yogurt' smoothie doesn't start to taste so bad after all.

WholeSoy & Co. Creamy Cultured Soy

WholeSoy Yogurt It looks like yogurt, smells like yogurt (mostly) and tastes ... well it tastes kinda like yogurt. You can tell it's not really the 'real deal' but this was a surprisingly good alternative. I was impressed. My expectations weren't very high for this product, but it's really pretty good. It's made from all organic ingredients too. I had the Raspberry flavor. It had a creamy texture and tasted of raspberries. But, what is the advantage of this product over regular yogurt. Hmmm... in the 6 oz serving of this product, there are 150 calories, 15 g of sugar, 3 g of fat (no saturated), no cholesterol but not much vitamins either. You all know how much I love Yoplait Light reviewed -->here which has only 100 calories, no fat, no cholesterol, 14 g of sugar, and a little vitamin A, D and throw in some calcium. I think I'm sticking with Yoplait Light! which is also little cheaper than the creamy cultured soy which costs almost $2.00 for one 6oz container.

Boca Soy Smoked Sausages

You would think it would taste just as good as other Boca products like Boca Burgers, which I absolutely adore, but don't be fooled. This literally tastes like cardboard! I tried boiling it, frying it, adding loads of toppings, but nothing makes it taste good. Don't waste the $2.50. It's truly horrible. I'm truly disappointed in Boca, because I generally love their products.
