Lean Cuisine Shrimp Alfredo

Lean Cuisine Shrimp AlfredoAlfredo sauce usually isn't that healthy with all that cream, but Lean Cuisine found a way to incorporate just enough in their Lean Cuisine Shrimp Alfredo dish, without breaking the calorie bank. Actually, I was more interested in the shrimp, pasta, and vegetables than I was in the Alfredo sauce, but I was willing to give it a try.

After the dish was microwaved and ready to eat, I was pleased with the texture of the shrimp and the vegetables, which consisted of broccoli and peas. The linguini pasta was also good, but there didn't seem to be that much of it. The Alfredo sauce was a bit thin and watery, plus there was just too much of the sauce especially when some of it could have been replaced with more pasta. Still, the taste of the entire dish was enjoyable and certainly worth the $2.20 I paid for it.

Tai Pei Garlic Shrimp

Tai Pei Garlic ShrimpTai Pei doesn't market itself as low calorie, low fat or low anything, but it caught my eye because of that interesting "Chinese take-out carton" shape. A quick scan of the ingredients list showed that this was only 70 calories per serving with 2.5 servings per box, which still puts this entire thing under 200 calories. No way this wasn't going back on the shelf, so into my trolley it went, and I had it for dinner that very evening.

There is no peeling or tearing of packaging required before putting it microwave, because it is m'wave safe. After 5 minutes, I could smell the delicious garlic aroma exuding from the ready-to-be-eaten Garlic Shrimp. I decided to dish out the 1 cup serving size, but I should have weighed it, because 1 cup was almost the entire thing (even though the box says it should be less than 1/3rd). So, I just said, let me eat it all - it's only 175 calories anyway. To complete the meal, I microwaved some BirdsEye SteamFresh Green Beans, and added serving (1 cup). One fabulously filling dinner for less than 210 calories!

Did I already mention that this meal was delicious - close to perfection?! The garlic sauce was light in taste and body. I drizzled it over the vegetables and since it wasn't a heavy sauce, it added only a light flavor. There were vegetables galore. Carrots, broccoli, sugar snap peas, bell peppers and water chestnuts. Lots and lots of veggie - and then I remembered that this should be "garlic shrimp." But where were the shrimp? After a big of digging around, I spotted 1 of the 7 shrimp - yes I counted! If this meal had a flaw, that would be it.

Weight Watchers SamrtOnes Dragon Shrimp Lo Mein

Weight Watchers Dragon Shrimp Lo MeinI have been curious as to why Weight Watchers and Healthy Choice brand frozen foods let Lean Cuisine introduce dozens of new and innovative meals, yet they kept the same old stuff. Well, it seems that Weight Watchers was just biding it's time, because they let loose 4 new Smart Ones meals including their Dragon Shrimp Lo Mein. It has, "tender shrimp in a mild soy-garlic sauce paired with Asian noodles tossed with sugar snap peas and carrots."

With a name like Dragon Shrimp, the shrimp had better be BIG, and yes they were - not huge, actually, maybe only medium size, but fat and juicy! The meal itself is very tasty - in fact it's one of my favorites - everything works well together, although I did think the sauce should have had more sweetness, which would have added a nice contrasting note. Weight Watchers meals don't tend to be big, so I had to pair this with something else to make it more of a filling lunch - forget about eating this for dinner! Instead of salad, I went with Luigis Italian Ice - one of my favorite cool treats (I cannot go through summers without Luigis)!

Bertolli Complete Skillet Meals for Two: Shrimp, Asparagus and Penne

Bertolli Complete Skillet Meals for TwoI first spotted these Bertolli Complete Skillet Meals for Two in the freezer of the grocery store a couple of months ago and was really curious to try them. I suppose the stars were aligned in Bertolli's favor this afternoon because there were a few reasons working together that contributed to my purchasing this meal. First of all, I promised a special someone that I would cook for him, but was completely haggard after an extremely long day and the last thing that I felt like doing was stress over a long and complicated meal preparation. Secondly, I was totally craving some pasta, and lots of it.

I chose the Shrimp, Asparagus and Penne version because, well, it was just calling my name. I am a fan of penne...and asparagus...and shrimp so it was a win-win option in my book. After pouring the contents of the meal bag into a large skillet, I put the lid on, set the timer for 10 minutes, and poured myself a large glass of wine. I downed that whole glass of wine during those 10 minutes; I guess my nerves were a little on edge from worrying about what I would find when I opened the lid on the skillet.

At the "ting" of the timer, I hesitantly opened the lid. Oh joyous day! The meal looked and smelled delicious. I picked out a penne noodle and bit in: Woo-Hoo! Perfectly al dente! But there was no time to take a bite of the whole thing because there was the "knock knock" at the door. Eek! Showtime! Much to my delight, as my guest entered the house he said, "Mmm, something smells delicious!" Well that made me feel a little bit better about the meal.

I divided the skillets contents between our two plates which amounted to two hearty servings. We dug in and I have to say that we both agreed that the Shrimp, Asparagus and Penne meal was pretty good. Not raving, slap ya' mamma' good, but satisfactory.

Pros: The penne came out perfectly cooked, there were just-right tender asparagus a-plenty, as well as juicy red peppers. The shrimp were alright too - not rubbery at all although I did have a few issues it.

Healthy Choice Cajun Chicken and Shrimp

Healthy Choice Cajun Chicken and ShrimpHealthy Choice Cajun Chicken and Shrimp is one of the Cafe Selections line of meals at Healthy Choice. They are supposed to be "exciting, restaurant-inspired recipes with creative combinations of crisp, colorful vegetables, seasoned meats, and flavorful spices." The Healthy Choice Cajun Chicken and Shrimp is a mix of "chicken tenderloin medallions and shrimp in a spicy tomato Cajun-style sauce tossed with white rice, red and green bell peppers and celery."

All the statements you see in bold are the ones that I totally disagree with. Lets start with the use of the word "Cajun" in the name of the meal, and the description of "flavorful and spicy." Nothing could be further from the truth! This meal is very bland and flavorless. Even the sauce, which is supposed to be tomato based, is weak at best. There was chicken in there somewhere, but I couldn't distinguish it since I think it's 'flavor' was totally gone. I think they said it best over at Heat Eat Review, "the people of Louisiana would laugh in your face" (for calling this Cajun)! [link].

Healthy Choice Creamy Garlic Shrimp

Healthy Choice Creamy Garlic ShrimpThe Healthy Choice Creamy Garlic Shrimp meal consists of shrimp tossed with bow-tie pasta in a creamy garlic basil sauce, complemented with a side of green beans and carrots and a cherry crisp dessert. I enjoyed this meal and my only complaint is that I wish there was a little more of it. That said, they didn't give us any wimpy, scrawny baby shrimp. Instead, Healthy Choice had the good sense to provide us with plump, juicy, tender shrimp - the more-than-one-bite-to-eat-it type. The sauce was flavorful and the garlic wasn't overpowering as can happen in some of these meals. There was quite a lot of sauce - maybe too much - which made the meal look like there was more to it than there really was. The vegetables remained fresh-tasting even after microwaving it for 5 minutes. I always have a problem with Healthy Choice including fruit in oatmeal and syrup dessert, otherwise known as "cherry crisp" in this meal, BUT since I was still hungry after eating the shrimp and veggies, I did eat the dessert, even though I would have preferred more vegetables or shrimp. I preferred this cherry crisp over the peach and pineapple ones that they have in other meals.
