Starbucks Egg White, Spinach & Feta Wrap
The Starbucks Spinach, Roasted Tomato, Feta & Egg Wrap is currently the lowest calorie option listed under their breakfast menu, so I decided to try it out. But instead of breakfast, I had it for lunch one day when I was while I was there working. This sandwich is made with a whole wheat wrap stuffed with an egg white patty, spinach and feta cheese (just as the name implies).
Serving Size: 1 wrap
Calories: 280
Total Fat: 9 grams, 14%

But, as with most food options at these types of places, the nutrition facts weren't the greatest. Each sandwich only has 280 calories, 32% of the daily value for fiber and 19 grams of protein, but also 18% of the DV for saturated fat and 48% of the DV for sodium.

Starbucks is notorious for their ridiculously high calorie snacks and baked goods that beckon you from a glass case while you innocently order your Tall Skinny Latte. I'm usually pretty good at fending off those temptations, but recently I decided to give in when I glanced over and found the words "reduced-fat" not once, but twice in the name of one of their creations. The Reduced-Fat Turkey Bacon, Cholesterol-Free Egg, Reduced-Fat White Cheddar Breakfast Sandwich is as almost as much of a mouthful to say as the majority of Starbucks' drinks!
When I first unwrapped it, I was a little disappointed with its appearance. It didn't really look like what I remembered seeing in the glass case. In fact, it was much more egg-dominated than the name suggests. It is served warm ("oven-toasted") on a multigrain English muffin but ven after taking a few bites, the bacon was hard to find. The cheese, however, was gooey and had a strong flavor, which is uncommon in a reduced-fat cheese. While I'm not a huge fan of egg, I actually enjoyed the cheese/egg combo, possibly because the hearty English muffin balanced out the eggy flavor. Although there wasn't nearly enough turkey bacon, I enjoyed this sandwich and it filled me up for longer than my usual cereal and soymilk breakfast preference.

Starbucks debuted it's new star-shaped breakfast Piadini today. There are 2 varieties, the sausage, egg and cheese and the Portobella Mushroom Piadini, which is the one that I tried. The pre-prepared star shaped Piadini crust is filled with chunks of roasted portobella mushrooms, chopped spinach, a blend of feta and ricotta cheeses, and eggs. Although the star shape was unique and attractive, the black mushrooms peeking out suggested that this might not be something I would enjoy. When I bit into the sandwich, I really couldn't distinguish between the textures of the mushrooms and spinach, but it was ... okay. It wasn't messy or goopy since it was flat and nothing oozed out. The cheese was evident, both in taste and in the odor of the feta, but it still seemed to need more flavor - something that would contrast and stand out.
Overall I would say that I wouldn't ever find myself feenin' for this, but it was okay ... when it was hot. Once it cooled down, it was spongy and I couldn't eat it anymore.

I know you're saying to yourself - what the heck is Dunkin' Donuts doing on a "healthy" and "diet" food review website?! Well, fear not ladies and gentlemen, I haven't loss my mind. Dunkin Donuts has a new DDSmart Menu, which features "healthier choices." They are now the first fast food company to make an all Egg White Flatbread Sandwich.
There are 2 varieties, an Egg White Veggie sandwich which features egg whites, peppers, onions, mushrooms, reduced fat cheddar cheese on multigrain bread. The other one is an Egg White Turkey Sausage sandwich which has egg whites, turkey sausage, spinach, reduced fat mozzarella cheese on multigrain bread.
I found the Veggie sandwich a little bland (sorry vegetarians). Maybe it needed more salt (although the nutrition facts suggest that not another gram should be added). The peppers, onions & mushrooms didn't add anything to the texture nor the taste. In contrast, I thought the Turkey Sausage was delicious. The sausage made a difference and the sandwich just seemed more spicy.

Subway has tried to cultivate a reputation as one of the healthier fast food chains, thanks to offering several sandwich options with under 6 grams of fat and yogurt, apples, and raisins as side options instead of oily french fries. If you're looking for a meatless option however, you might think that you're stuck with the Veggie Delight, which is basically a salad on a bun - hardly satisfying. But recently, I visited a Subway that offers a more substantial option: the Veggie Patty Sandwich.
You'll be able to instantly recognize this sandwich because it looks like a rectangular veggie burger, with visible bits of carrot and peppers. The veggie patty sandwich comes as a "melt" meaning that it usually topped with melted cheese. In the interest of calorie counts and your health, I would suggest ordering your sandwich without cheese or mayonnaise and asking for plenty of vegetables instead. The Veggie Patty itself tastes like a Gardenburger - plenty salty with the added texture of vegetables and vegetable protein. They can be a little oily, so you might want to blot off excess moisture with your napkin before digging in.

Jimmy Dean has some of the most unhealthy breakfast products I have ever come across. The Jimmy Dean Pancakes and Sausage Links Breakfast Bowl has 710 calories and 55% of the daily value of saturated fat. The Eggs, Potato, and Ham and Eggs, Potatoes, Bacon and Cheddar Cheese Breakfast Bowls have half the calories (390) but 120% of the RDA for sodium. Because of this, I really didn't have high hopes for their new "light" Jimmy Dean D-Lights Breakfast Sandwiches.
I tried the Black Forest Ham Sandwich which has a whole grain English style muffin with Black Forest Ham, egg white and swiss cheese. The sandwich actually looked (close to) picture perfect - but who has ever seen an egg white "patty" - that thing looked really fake and I couldn't even begin to imagine what it would taste like after being microwaved. But I went ahead anyway - and surprise, surprise - the sandwich wasn't too bad at all. The fake texture of the egg white took well to the microwave, and although this entire sandwich is nothing like homemade, it's definitely edible in a strange, I'm eating something totally fake, but it tastes surprisingly good - way.

The Bread: So many choices these days, but let's stay away from "white, bleached, enriched" and go for something with "whole grains" (different from whole wheat flour). Try Sara Lee Heart Healthy 100% Multi-Grain Bread. There's 100 calories in each slice of bread (on average), so you've already got 200 calories.
The Veggies: You want to bulk up on the veggies because it will make your sandwich thicker, and it doesn't add as many calories as meat. For lettuce, go for Romaine over Iceberg to get a little better nutritional value [check the comparison]. You've probably only added 20 calories maximum here.
Another staple should be slices of tomatoes. You want to make sure that you have firm tomatoes. There's nothing worse than tomatoes juice just oozing from a "too old tomato." Again, you are probably adding another 20 calories here.
Want to get fancy with the vegetables - add more. I like strips of bell peppers and slices of cucumbers cucumbers. Another 30 calories from both. What are some of the vegetables you put in your sandwich?

When I tried the Chicken, Spinach, & Mushrooms Panini I loved it! The bread was crispy even though the sandwich was microwaved and the toppings really blended well together [read the review]. I just assumed that all the different Panini's would also taste pretty good, but I was proven wrong by the Lean Cuisine Steak, Cheddar and Mushroom Panini. This has "strips of beef steak with mushrooms, caramelized onions and cheese on sourdough bread." The bread is still crispy but not as crispy as with the chicken panini; the cheese tastes like the hateful melted processed cheese I used to have as a child; and the rest of the flavors aren't complementary - I couldn't tell whether I was eating pieces of steak or the mushrooms, especially since they were smothered with lots of that goopy cheese.
