Flat Earth Farmland Cheddar Baked Veggie Crisps

Flat Earth Farmland Cheddar Baked Veggie CrispsMy family loves to snack, so I am always on the lookout for healthy and comparable alternatives to the average junk food. After scouring the chip isle, I discovered Flat Earth Farmland Cheddar Baked Veggie Crisps. I was a bit reluctant because I have had Veggie Chips before and they were not exactly bad, but did not taste anything like a succulent potato chip.

Flat Earth has definitely found the right way to incorporate veggies into mouthwatering snacks. The product does not look exactly like the picture on the bag because the photo on the bag is extremely computerized, however, that will be the last of your worries after you take a bite. My first reaction was "mmm..." followed by "yum" followed by more munching, crunching and gutteral sounds not immediately recognized by most, but translated to, "these are so good. If anybody tries to put their hands in this bag, they're gonna get it."

The "chips" are coated with a cheesy powder so you get some orange fingers. The texture is thick and hearty like Ruffles, which are a bit thicker than the average potato chip. However, Flat Earth Farmland Cheddar Baked Veggie Crisps do not render a greasy feeling, as other chips usually do. The flavor is just perfectly cheesy and seasoned just right.

Glenny's Sea Salt Spud Delites

Glenny's Sea Salt Spud DelitesGlenny's Spud Delites are available in 3 varieties, Sea Salt, Sour Cream and Onion, and Texas BBQ. All of the flavors are good (depending on what kind of mood you're in), but my favorite is the basic Sea Salt. These are more like light, crunchy potato crisps, although even that description doesn't do them justice. They have got this airy texture that can't quite be put into words, and for some, may take a bit getting used to. Don't get me wrong though, I personally heart the flavor and texture yummy.

Genisoy All Natural Potato Bakes Ranch

Genisoy All Natural Potato BakesGenisoy All Natural Potato Bakes Ranch was in the vending machine, and looked like it was a more nutritious choice than many of the other options. In went my $1.00, and out came these, "smart snacking chips" which advertised 4 grams of protein, 80 calories, no cholesterol and 67% less fat than regular potato chips.

I eagerly tore into the bags after reading those stats. These chips were light and crispy, not oil-laden like regular potato chips. They reminded me of Glenny's Spud Delites, only the ranch flavor was much more robust and less artificial than any of the Glenny's flavors. These definitely taste very strongly of ranch, so if you don't like that flavor, give it a pass; however, I liked the zest and zip of these chips.

Brothers All Natural Potato Crisps

Brothers All Natural Potato CrispsBrothers All Natural has a good thing going with its Freeze-dried fruit (try the Brothers All Natural Strawberry Banana Fruit Crisps), so when they recently introduced Potato Crisps, which was named 2008 Best New Disney Product, I snagged some right away. These products can be hard to find, so I went online (brothersallnatural.com) and ordered a variety pack (2 8-packs for $14.99, with free shipping). The flavors are quite interesting - you've got Original with Sea Salt, Black Pepper & Sea Salt, Fresh Onion & Garlic, and Szechuan Pepper & Fresh Chives. Certainly a little more interesting than your run-of-the-mill Baked Lays Potato Chips, right?

I decided to get the Original and Szechuan flavors. What I found was that these had a strange 'melt-in-your-mouth' consistency, that was at first a bit off-putting, but I eventually grew to like. I much preferred the "Original" to the Szechuan, as interesting as the latter was. These crisps don't really taste like "real" potato chips. The only ingredients in the Original flavor are fresh potatoes and sea salt, but these guys are freeze-dried to "bring the potato slice to a crisp". I agree with Marvo, who reviewed these at The Impulsive Buy, "the Brothers-All-Natural Potato Crisps are like the diet cola of potato chips. You won't like the taste at first, but you'll eventually get used to it, because you have to."

LesserEvil Classic Sea Salt Krinkle Sticks

Lesser Evil Classic Sea Salt Krinkle SticksAre you a potato chip advocate seeking out a healthier alternative with all of the same delightful emotions that digging into an enormous bag of potato chips provides? I think I may have found a worthy alternative in the form of Lesser Evil Classic Sea Salt Krinkle Sticks.

The nutrition facts are better than for regular potato chips in terms of fat content. A 28 gram (1 ounce) serving provides 110 calories, 2.5 grams of fat (4% of the RDA), no saturated fat, 230 mg of sodium (10% of the RDA), 2 grams of fiber (6% of the RDA), no sugar and 2 grams of protein.

The flavor and mouth feel, on the other hand, could not be more comparable. Crunchy, yet lightly airy with a slightly greasy feel that makes potato chips feel so sinful. They are a little salty (as you would expect), which is different, but I found myself loving these.

Lays Reduced Fat Kettle Cooked Chips

Lays Kettle Cooked ChipsKettle chips are a nice alternative to the thin flaky potato chips you know and love. Lays has made a reduced fat version of their Kettle Cooked Chips, which is described as extra crunchy - and that it is. They are thicker with a gritty texture and very crunchy - even the word "crunchy" sounds like it could beat the regular thin "crispy" Lays if they were to battle each other in a fight. I love Kettle chips, but they are not all low calories, so be on the lookout.

A 1 ounce serving of Lays Reduced Fat Kettle Cooked Chips (about 18 chips) has 140 calories, 6 grams of total fat which is 9% of the RDA, 0.5 grams of saturated fat (3% of the RDA), a low 7% of sodium (160 milligrams), 2 grams of protein and 19 grams of total carbohydrates, which includes 2 grams of fiber (6% of the RDA). Original Lays Kettle Cooked Chips have 150 calories, 8 grams of fat and 1 gram of saturated fat.

Eat Smart Baked Sweet Potato Crisps

Eat Smart Baked Sweet Potato CrispsEat Smart Snacks are made with all-natural and USDA Certified Organic ingredients. The Baked Sweet Potato Crisps are all natural, made with real sweet potatoes and 100% pure canola oil. I interpreted that to mean that I would see sweet potatoes in the ingredients somewhere, but alas the ingredients list reads, "potato flakes, potato starch, sweet potato flour, Canola oil, salt" etc. It might have been naive thinking on my part - but I just had to know where were the sweet potatoes, so I sent the company an email and 1 week later - no response.

Well, I still like the idea of "sweet potato" chips so I got to tasting. These chips are more crunchy and harder than regular chips. The lack of a salty flavor took a bit getting used to, but I am a person with a very high sodium intake. Once I got used to the fact that these were close to unsalted chips, I actually liked them. I think I would buy these again - although they are a little expensive - $3.99 for a big 6 ounce bag.

Kettle New York Cheddar with Herbs Kettle Chips

Kettle ChipsKettle Brand Kettle Chips (hope we haven't lost you already), are potato chips that are hand cooked in a big vat (they call it a kettle). The chips are not your regular thin, flaky potato chips, but instead, they are thick and crunchy. Kettle Foods does not add any artificial flavors, sweeteners or preservatives to their products, and try their best to include all natural ingredients. I tried the New York Cheddar with Herbs flavor, and all I can say is, "Yummy". It's hard to put down the bag once you start. The cheese flavoring wasn't coming off on my fingers, and they are not very salty - which, being somewhat of a salt addict, took me a very short time to get used to. This is one of my favorite flavors of Kettle Chips.

Baked Lays Potato Chips

Baked Lays Potato Chips This is a great tasting snack. The 'baked' chips do have a slightly different texture than regular' potato chips, with the baked ones being a bit 'thicker' - which really means that you don't get a bag half full of broken chip pieces. The baked chips are also less oily. In my opinion, these differences make for a better product. I tried the original and barbecue flavors. I prefer the original, but the barbecue isn't bad either.
