Jolly Time 100 Calorie Healthy Pop Popcorn Minis

Jolly Time Healthy Pop Popcorn MinisLet me just get this out there: I love popcorn. I love it so much that an ex-boyfriend bought me my own popcorn popper for Christmas one year. It's the perfect snacking food for when I'm studying, and it's even considered a whole grain. Its healthy profile is dependent on choosing a low-fat, not overly-buttered kind, though, which is why I love Jolly Time 100 Calorie Healthy Pop Popcorn Minis.

I have both a sweet tooth and a salty tooth, so my favorite incarnation of this popped goodness is the Kettle Corn flavor, however, the Butter flavor is delicious as well. Each bag pops up to a satisfying 4 cups, all for just 100 calories. With only 2 grams of fat, this is something you can indulge in guilt-free, and the 3 grams of protein and 8-9 grams of fiber (a full 1/3rd of the daily recommendations) make this a certifiably healthy option. Sodium is also kept in check, with only 210-280 mg (9-12% of RDA depending on flavor) per bag.

Reader Favorites: What is Your Favorite Brand of Low Fat Microwave Popcorn

PopcornWhat's your favorite brand of Low Fat Microwave Popcorn? None of the "low fat" popcorns reviewed has received more than 3 out of 5 for the rating! So we need your help - Is there a brand that actually tastes good on it's own, or does everybody do what I do and add a little microwaved margarine or buttery spray?

Smart Balance Smart n Healthy Microwave Popcorn

Smart Balance PopcornSmart Balance says, "just a hint of butter and a pinch of salt make our Smart 'n Healthy Popcorn the smartest snack going." I put this to the test, and sure enough, at first glance, the steamy popcorn aroma will explode from the bright blue bag leading you to believe that you're in for a treat. Numerous popcorn kernels have a yellow appearance to them, like buttered popcorn, but don't be fooled. I had lofty expectations and I was let down hard when I ate this popcorn.

Sure, it is fun to eat and eat and eat without too much guilt, since each cup of popped popcorn is only 20 calories, but I would rather eat one cup of delicious popcorn than 10 cups of Smart Balance Smart 'N Healthy Microwave Popcorn. It's not completely tasteless, but would probably get about a 3 on a scale of 10. It's a shame because even the ingredients are on point with this product, but I guess they sacrificed on the taste.

Jolly Time Healthy Pop Caramel Apple Popcorn

Healthy Pop PopcornI really enjoy popcorn, but as you should know by now, popcorn is one of the best ways to get in saturated and trans fat - plus loads of calories, into your diet. My favorite way of reducing the calories, is to buy the fat free ones and add a little of my own microwave melted margarine and salt if necessary. I have also never been a big fan of the 'sweet' popcorns, like caramel etc., because in my mind, popcorn is supposed to be salty. But on the recommendation of a friend, I tried Jolly Time Healthy Pop Caramel Apple 94% Fat Free Popcorn and was pretty glad I did.

The taste is not overwhelmingly sweet at all - more like a light caramel flavored popcorn. This might be disappointing to some, but really, you know the sweeter it is, the more calories. It wasn't the best tasting popcorn I have ever had, but I do think it is the best tasting lower calorie /fat one that I have had to date.

Low calorie popcorn

PopcornCheck out the recipe for 61 calorie popcorn over at Diet-blog [link]. The nutritional breakdown for this microwaved popcorn is actually 61 calories, 0.8 grams total fat, 5 grams of total carbohydrate, 1 grams of protein, and no sodium.

This is a recipe from the book YOU On A Diet by Michael F. Roizen, M.D., and Mehmet C. Oz, M.D. You need:
* 1/2 cup popcorn kernels
* Flavored cooking spray (butter, olive oil, garlic)
* Garlic salt or cinnamon

Place the popcorn in a covered microwave safe bowl, microwave for four to five minutes (don't burn it!) Pour it on to a baking sheet and coat by spraying for 1 - 2 seconds at most with Pam. Follow with the garlic salt or cinnamon.

Movie Theater Popcorn

popcorn Tell the truth - you sorta had a feeling that the popcorn sold in movie theaters wasn't too good for you - didn't you? Well, I'm here to tell you that it's worse than you thought. From CSPI: "The smallest servings we found (a kid-size at Cineplex Odeon or a small bag at AMC) contain 20 grams of fat, 14 of them saturated. That's close to 3/4 of your saturated fat limit for an entire day.

A large popcorn had about 80 grams of fat, more than 50 of them saturated. Diet Trash That's almost three day's worth of sat fat, or what you'd get from six Big Macs. And that's if you skip the "butter." Succumb to the "butter" on your large popcorn and you'll boost the fat to close to 130 grams, or two days worth, plus four day's worth of cholesterol. But what's another two Big Macs when you're already up to six?"

Act II Microwave Popcorn with 94% Fat-free Butter

popcorn Let me confess - popcorn is one of my favorite snacks! I've tried it without butter before, and I was less than impressed (Orville Redenbacher's Movie Theater Butter Popcorn Light), so when I saw that these were on sale at $2.00 for a box with 8, I was a bit hesitant, but the price was good - and I'm an optimist, so I had hope that Act II would be better than the Orville Redenbacher.

Orville Redenbacher's Movie Theater Butter Popcorn Light

popcorn I thought these might be a healthy snack, but boy was I wrong! Okay, so there isn't a lot of fat in this, only 2.5 g and no saturated fat and there is 5 g of dietary fiber, but there is a whopping 120 calories per serving. While this might not sound like much, consider that one bag is 2.5 servings. That means that 1 bag of popcorn has 300 calories. I don't know about you, but I generally eat the entire bag and I know for sure that I don't eat less than half of it, even if I'm sharing.
