Lifesavers Sugar Free Candy

Sugar Free LifesaversMy dietary weakness is sweets. I love 'em all - candy, chocolate, cookies, brownies ... you name it, I love it! But we all know that eating too much sugar is just no good, so I sample in moderation and look for brands that have good sugar free varieties. I came across Sugar Free Lifesavers at Wal-Mart for $2.29 and I knew that I had to try them.

Right after I bought them at that self checkout counter, I was already trying to decide which flavor to try first - Cherry, Watermelon, Raspberry, Pineapple and Orange flavors come individually wrapped in the bag. I just wanted to try them all, all at once! But my first pick was the Pineapple. When I put it in my mouth it wasn't exactly what I expect at all ... it was a lot better! The flavor of the pineapple was quite strong and I could even taste a little coconut in it, almost like a pina colada. I almost couldn't even tell it was sugar free. I usually love to crunch my candy, but since the flavor was so strong, my mouth would almost feel a little sore (like the feeling when you have too much pineapple). Otherwise these candies are perfect.

Great Bite Orange Mints

Great Bite MintsThe other day I was bargain hunting in Jack's World (an incredible discount store with a few different locations...I was in the Herald Square store). Everything on the first floor of Jack's is 99 cents, and they have some great stuff - from food to household items. The store is a find in itself ... but enough about that. While standing in line, my eyes wandered over to the candy/gum shelf. I noticed Great Bite Mints. The cute little "shark bite" on the label and the fact that it was $1.00 for a 3 pack ... and the fact that it was in the "impulse buy" section - well, I just couldn't resist.

They come in a few different flavors, including spearmint, peppermint, and orange, which was the one I picked up. The orange flavor is sweet and fruity, not minty. In fact, they taste exactly like the Tic-Tacs they resemble so closely in packaging, size, and shape, and for less than half the price.

It says there are approximately 28 servings per container ... I always wondered why they would say "approximately" and then use such a specific number ... am I the only one? Each mint is actually a serving (they have got to be kissing with that), and the nutrition information resembles the report card of a child who has never once shown up to school: zeros all down the line. No calories, carbs, protein, fat, sodium, vitamins, minerals, or anything else. (Regular Tic-Tacs have 2 calories each).

Diet Trash: Coastal Bay Confections Starlight Mints

Diet Trash is about the food products you might eat because you think you're doing something better for your diet, but you'll be surprised to know, they're not.

Starlight MintsStarlight mints are very popular. They are those hard white mints with the red striping going around the outer edges. Mints are simply sugar with added flavoring and color. Diet Trash I was shocked to discover that just 3 starlight mints are 50 calories. Now, I am not suggesting that 50 calories is a lot, but this is dietTrash because you can easily add an extra 100 calories from eating a few mints - something you might never think about. I think I'll be sticking to sugar free mints from now on, like Ice Breaker Sours Sugar-free Mints or better yet, Slim Mints.

Teenee Beanee Island Breeze Jelly Beans

Diet Trash is about the food products you might eat because you think you're doing something better for your diet, but you'll be surprised to know, they're not.

Jelly BeansSplashed across the front of the packaging is the fact that Teenee Beanee Jelly Beans is "A Fat Free Candy." My first thought was, "Am I reading this right? Did they really advertise the fact that jelly beans are a "fat free" candy?!" Yes, they and all jelly beans are fat free - but they are 99% sugar, and the other 1% is just flavoring.

Diet Trash This is one type of candy that I don't want my kids to know even exists (if or when I have any). One serving is 36 pieces, 150 calories and 23 grams of sugar - oh, and no fat. I'm not picking on just Teenee Beanee Jelly Beans only, it's all jelly beans - but that just happened to be the brand that I came across.
