Edys Apple Pie Frozen Dairy Dessert

Edys Apple Pie Frozen Dairy DessertI like eating a variety of ice cream but prefer that it be somewhat low in fat and calories. Even though this Edy's Apple Pie Frozen Dairy Dessert isn't explicitly either of those things, the nutrition facts are comparable to other "light" ice creams. Technically, this product is not an ice cream because the first ingredient is whey rather than milk, but for the average consumer, I would consider Edy's Apple Pie to be an ice cream.

The description depicts this ice cream as vanilla with pie crust and apple pieces, but the ice cream itself has an apple-tinged color and tasty flavor of apple pie from the addition of spices, some of which can be seen as specks in the ice cream. Indeed, there are also apple pieces mixed in the ice cream, but most are rather small and don't really change the overall texture of the ice cream. My favorite part of the ice cream was the inclusion of the pie crust pieces, which provided sporadic chewy pieces to complement the ice cream.

Edy's Slow Churned Chocolate Vanilla Swirl Yogurt Blends

Edy's Slow Churned Chocolate Vanilla Swirl Yogurt BlendsI usually associate chocolate vanilla swirl ice cream with the self-serve ice cream machines at buffet restaurants, but with the Edy's Slow Churned Yogurt Blends Chocolate Vanilla Swirl Cultured Frozen Dairy Dessert, I found an ultra healthy iteration that I can keep in my own freezer. Even though this product is classified as a frozen dairy dessert, I still tend to call it ice cream in everyday conversation.

Inside the container the chocolate and vanilla flavors were arranged in alternating layers as expected. What I didn't anticipate though, was how creamy this would be. The ice cream had a nice, mild sweetness too. For an ordinary flavor combination, this ice cream held my attention quite well. In addition to being a low-fat source of calcium, this ice cream also has active yogurt cultures, which give it an edge over other ice cream.

Turkey Hill Stuff'd Strawberry Cheesecake Ice Cream

Turkey Hill Stuff'd Strawberry Cheesecake Ice CreamIf you thought that Turkey Hill "Stuff'd" Strawberry Cheesecake Ice Cream would be "stuffed" with calories, fat, and sugar, you would be wrong. Surprisingly, this treat is described as a "mild cream cheese flavored light ice cream with cheesecake pieces and a strawberry swirl." Well, well, well ... a "light" cheesecake ice cream sounded too good to resist, so I picked up a pint for $2.99 - not only is this light, but it's one of the more inexpensive varieties of ice cream, too!

I dug in to the ice cream as soon as I got it home. I was slightly disappointed to see that it melted quickly, but that just meant I had to dig in immediately, right? I liked the flavor of the ice cream, and was especially delighted by the cheesecake chunks. The texture was creamy and it was satisfying but not too heavy.

Purely Decadent Dairy Free Mocha Almond Fudge

Purely Decadent Dairy Free Mocha Almond Fudge

After experiencing the deliciousness of Turtle Mountain Purely Decadent Dairy Free Cherry Nirvana Ice Cream, I absolutely had to try another flavor. When I discovered Purely Decadent Dairy Free Mocha Almond Fudge at Target (on sale), I was immediately dreaming of a delectably creamy sweet treat.

No suspense - my dreams definitely came through on this one woohoo. From the Turtle Mountain website: We are taking coffee to an all-new level with this one. Luxurious fudge sauce and roasted almonds swirled in a rich coffee flavored non-dairy frozen dessert. You may be tempted to have it for breakfast. Hello - they aren't lying. Each pint sized container houses coffee flavored ice cream with copious swirls of chocolate fudge and tons of almond chunks mixed throughout. There is no shortage of the toppings, and i's just one delicious bite after another. You would never guess that there is no milk in this creamy treat.

Private Selection Light Black Raspberry Chocolate Chunk Ice Cream

Private Selection Light Black Raspberry Chocolate Chunk Ice CreamI love ice cream of any flavor - the sweet, creamy texture is delicious no matter what the season. Some people prefer full fat ice cream, but I much prefer the low-fat or light kind so that I can enjoy more without the excess of fat. While I was out trying to decide what flavor ice cream to get, I decided to try the Kroger private label brand. I decided to get a tub of Private Selection Light Black Raspberry Chocolate Chunk Ice Cream because it sounded like a fun and delicious option.

What I expected when I opened the container was a pinkish hue with chocolate chunks in it, but what I saw was a mauve/ magenta color. While this was slightly weird, it wasn't enough to deter me from trying this ice cream. It turned out to have a fruity taste, with a creamy mouth-feel. The chocolate chunks are quite large but softer than your regular piece of frozen chocolate so that they're easily chewable. The raspberry and chocolate combination is quite nice and fit together like old friends that know each other well, but each flavor is quite distinct with it's own personality. Still, while this flavor was ... okay, there really was no wow factor.

Arctic Zero Chocolate Peanut Butter

Arctic Zero Chocolate Peanut ButterOh my gosh ... has anyone tried Arctic Zero? I came across it randomly online, and when I saw than an entire pint of the frozen ice cream-like goodness had just 128 calories, I had to try it. Luckily for me, I'm in California right now where certain stores happen to carry this product. What is Arctic Zero, you ask? It's a "rich and creamy ice cream replacement designed for those who love dessert but avoid high calorie and high fat foods."

I picked up a pint of each Chocolate, Vanilla, and Chocolate Peanut Butter flavors for just $3.69 each (less than a pint of some premium ice creams) and set out to be amazed. I decided I was in a Peanut Butter kind of mood, so I opened that one. I dug in, and all I can say is - WOW ! Although it doesn't taste exactly like full-fat ice cream, this stuff is pretty darn good. Talk about rich and creamy, perfect for a hot summer day.

Edy's Slow Churned Samoas Cookie Light Ice Cream

Edys Slow Churned Samoas Cookie Light Ice CreamThin Mints are probably the most popular Girl Scout cookie, but I bet Samoas (or Caramel Delites) are a close second. I don't know how the combination of cookie, caramel, chocolate, and coconut in Samoas can be so tasty, but it just is. Edy's (or Dreyer's) has mixed the yumminess of Samoas with ice cream to make Edy's Slow Churned Samoas Cookie Light Ice Cream.

The caramel and vanilla ice cream base sounds like it would complement the Samoas, but while it is smooth and creamy, I thought the caramel was too mild. There was a decent amount of crumbled Samoas in the ice cream, but they were too ground up to really enjoy the essence of the Samoa. I thought I would LOVE this ice cream, but the caramel and vanilla base is just so-so and the Samoas cookies could have been just about anything. As far as Girl Scout Cookie inspired flavors go, I would have to say Edy's Slow Churned Thin Mint Cookie Ice Cream is way better.

Edy's Fat Free No Sugar Added Chocolate Fudge Ice Cream

Edys Fat Free No Sugar Added Chocolate Fudge Ice CreamSo fat free and sugar free cannot possibly taste good together ... it's one or the other, right? Plus if there's Chocolate and Fudge in the title - well, how could that possibly be sugar free? These were the thoughts in my head as I picked up Edy's Fat Free No Sugar Added Chocolate Fudge Ice Cream (a mouthful in and of itself). I was too intrigued to let this go by without a taste test.

I scooped the rich and thick ice cream into a crispy cone and was in a momentary chocolate utopia What?! This is delicious woowee. The ice cream is so thick and creamy that it melts slowly in a bowl and withstands a plethora of licks while resting in your cone. As I was munching away, contemplating how to describe the taste, only one word came to mind: fudgy. Best of all, I never experienced that repulsive artificial aftertaste, which most of the time occurs when companies utilize sugar substitutes.

Breyers Light Chocolate Mocha Silk Ice Cream

Breyers Light Chocolate Mocha Silk Ice CreamI'm not a huge candy bar person, but give me a chocolate/ coffee treat, and I'm in heaven. When I saw Breyers Light Chocolate Mocha Silk Ice Cream, I couldn't pass up at the chance to combine two of my favorites - mocha and ice cream - into one lightened treat.

The carton promises "indulgent mocha light ice cream blended with vanilla mousse swirl and chocolate flavored chips". What I got was Rocky Road sans peanuts. From both color and taste, I could tell that the ice cream wasn't straight chocolate, and the coffee flavor was very mild and barely detectable. The chocolate itself was pleasant, although mild. The "vanilla mousse swirl" is really a fancy way of saying "marshmallow fluff"; it tasted sweet, but not like vanilla. The chocolate chunks - chunks, not chips - added a nice contrast of texture, and were abundant enough to stud each bite. The ice cream really is silky - there's no odd grittiness or iciness, and it doesn't melt uber fast like the fat-free varieties. Sadly, this ice cream tries too hard to please everyone - it's not chocolatey enough to offend chocolate haters, not coffee-ish enough to offend coffee haters, and not flavorful enough to impress lovers of either.

Edy's Slow Churned Double Fudge Brownie Ice Cream

Edys Slow Churned Double Fudge Brownie Ice CreamEdy's (or Dreyer's) Slow Churned Ice Cream is one of my favorite brands of ice cream. The Slow Churned results in a reduced calorie and fat ice cream that still tastes delicious and creamy. While I do like all kinds of ice cream, I favor ice cream that's more creative than just plain vanilla or chocolate, so when I looked around the ice cream aisle, I decided to try Edy's Slow Churned Double Fudge Brownie Ice Cream.

This ice cream is all about the chocolate with a chocolate ice cream base for the fudge ribbon and little pieces of brownie that are mixed in. The chocolate ice cream is nice and creamy, and the fudge ribbon was pretty but didn't really add much to the overall flavor. I liked chewing on the brownie pieces, but they were too small for my taste. Overall, the double fudge brownie flavor was good but not great.

Breyers Overload Fried Ice Cream

Breyers Overload Fried Ice CreamFried ice cream doesn't sound very healthy at all, but the description of Breyers Overload! Fried Ice Cream on the packaging says, "cinnamon caramel flavored light ice cream with a honey caramel swirl & cinnamon sugar tostada pieces." I've never had real fried ice cream, but from what I understand, the ice cream is typically fried in a starchy shell. Obviously, the execution of this supermarket ice cream differs from the real thing, but I was still willing to give it a shot.

The ice cream base is excellent, very creamy with plenty of caramel flavor but very subtle, if any, flavor from the cinnamon. The Tostada pieces make this ice cream particularly unique, adding an extra dimension to the texture. They had a bit of a stale chew to them, but their presence was distinct nonetheless. I liked this ice cream, but the folks over at Snackerrific seemed to love it while at Onsecondscoop they did not.

Edy's Slow Churned Thin Mint Cookie Ice Cream

Edy's Slow Churned Thin Mint Cookie Ice CreamThin Mint is now almost synonymous with Girl Scout Cookies, but if want to bypass the 25% of the daily value for saturated fat, then I suggest you try Edy's Slow Churned Thin Mint Cookie Ice Cream (also the same as Dreyer's brand).

Edy's describes this as, "a refreshing and original flavor that combines white mint light ice cream and Thin Mint cookies" and they are spot on. The mint ice cream base is mild but amped up by the Thin Mint cookie crumbs. I have never seen so many cookie crumbs mixed into an ice cream before in my life. In fact, there are even pockets of Thin Mint crumbs within the ice cream so that you can also get that fresh cookie crumb texture ... so minty, cookie-licious and yum woohoo.

Edy's Slow Churned Take the Cake Light Ice Cream

Edys Slow Churned Take the Cake Light Ice CreamIn 2007, Edy's (or Dreyer's, depending on geography) had an American Idol-themed contest with a selection of creative light ice cream flavors. Edy's Slow Churned Take the Cake Light Ice Cream was the winner of the contest and is now a regular flavor in the line. Since I like American Idol, creativity, and light ice cream, I had tried a number of the ice cream candidates, but this flavor really is quite appealing.

The million dollar question to me was, would this actually taste like cake ... and ice cream? Oh yes it did! It's difficult to describe the taste of the cake flavor, but think yellow cake and the bright yellow color certainly conveys that, and the light blue frosting ribbon provides additional sweetness. To top it all off, there are huge, crunchy sprinkles that are like flattened chocolate chips but have lots of color to them. This feels like such a guilty treat, so thankfully Edy's slow churned this bad boy to get rid of "1/2 the fat and 1/3 less calories in regular ice cream."

Breyers Double Churn French Chocolate Fat Free Ice Cream

Breyers Double Churn French Chocolate Fat Free Ice CreamAre you the adventurous type when it comes to ice cream? The type that is always trying out new flavors? Or do you stick the tried and true? I'm the former, always intrigued by different flavors of ice cream and especially curious when it's lower in calories and fat. Breyers Double Churn French Chocolate Fat Free Ice Cream sounded yummy, so it got picked to be my flavor of the week.

Since this ice cream was fat free, my expectations on taste weren't too high, but I ended up really liking it. I don't know what makes the flavor French chocolate since the ingredients look the same as other (fat free) chocolate ice cream, but it's definitely tastes chocolaty with a mild sweetness and lots of creaminess. The light texture left me feeling refreshed and not weighted down like the heavier ice creams on the market.

Skinny Cow Chocolate Truffle Bars

Skinny Cow Truffle BarsSkinny Cow Low Fat Ice Cream Sandwich and Skinny Cow Vanilla Skinny Dippers have already received rave reviews, so when I saw the Skinny Cow Truffle Bars - available in chocolate and French vanilla flavors, I picked up a box (of the chocolate flavor) right away. a 6-pack box cost me $5.99, which was a bit pricey but less so with a coupon from the website.

After unwrapped the bar, I found a pleasingly large chocolate bar drizzled with crisscrossing patterns of chocolate ribbons. I took a bite and savored the flavor. It was rich, not icy, and the chocolate was perfect. That said, I didin't experience the same flavors as a rich truffle ice cream but it was good regardless.

Tofutti Vanilla Cuties

Tofutti CutiesTofutti prides itself in making tasty dairy free foods. I have tried a few of their products and haven't been disappointed yet. And they have another winner in my book with Tofutti Cuties. These are dairy free ice cream sandwiches that are as delightful as their name. I tried the classic chocolate wafer and vanilla ice cream combo. I must say the wafer is soft and moist and the ice cream was smooth and creamy - you never would guess that it this is dairy free!

Each Tofutti Vanilla Cuties weighs in at 40 grams, which is the perfect snack size, and provides 130 calories, 6 grams of total fat which includes 1 gram of saturated fat (9% and 5% of the daily value), 2 grams of protein and 17 grams of total carbohydrates which includes 9 grams of sugars.

Breyers Double Churn Butter Pecan Ice Cream

Breyers Double Churn Butter Pecan Ice CreamOne of the ways I am still able to enjoy ice cream as a treat is that I get the lower calorie and fat "slow churned" varieties. When I see a flavor I haven't tried before, I'm all over it, and that's how a tub of Breyers Double Churn Butter Pecan Ice Cream ended up in my grocery cart. With the claim of half the fat and 25% fewer calories than regular ice cream, I was hopeful that the ice cream would be able to maintain a balance between deliciousness and healthiness.

The ice cream had a sweet and creamy texture similar to that of regular ice cream. I appreciated the lightness of it which didn't leave me excessively full. It would have been even better to have more pecans in the ice cream, but the pecans that were there really enhanced the butter pecan flavor.

Weight Watchers Smart Ones Mint Chocolate Chip Sundae

Weight Watchers Smart Ones Mint Chocolate Chip SundaeI usually eat ice cream by itself without any embellishment to savor the ice cream for its own merits, but I also don't like keeping a hodgepodge of barely used ice cream toppings in my small kitchen. Since Mint Chocolate Chip is one of my favorite flavors, I decided to try the Weight Watchers Smart Ones Mint Chocolate Chip Sundae.

Each Sundae has a swirly dollop of mint ice cream on a bed of chocolate cookie crumbs with fudge and mini chocolate chips on top. The ice cream was nice and creamy, and I liked the combination of the ice cream and the toppings. The cookie crumbs were kind of bland and didn't really mesh with the ice cream well. I would have preferred having a whole cookie as the base rather than the crumbs, but it was still a tasty dessert for the most part.

Dreyer's Light Slow Churned Eggnog Ice Cream

Dreyer's Light Slow Churned Eggnog IceCreamEvery Christmas season, Dreyer's produces some tasty Limited Edition Ice Cream flavors. This year, it's Peppermint, Apple Pie & Slow Churned Egg Nogg. I love eggnog, and it's hard to resist the seasonal temptation. Create ice cream with this sinful pleasure, and you've got the potential for a delightful diet derailment. Dreyer's, however, has decided to make a Light ice cream of this holiday treat. Considering what eggnog is traditionally made from, how could a light ice cream version of it be good?

I don't know how they did it, but this ice cream is superb! It has all of the classical taste of eggnog, including distinct but not overwhelming nutmeg and rum flavors. It's sweeter than just straight eggnog, but isn't as sweet as most vanillas. The texture is smooth as silk and creamy as ...well, cream. I cannot emphasize how much I adored this ice cream.

Dreyer's LoadeD Chocolate Fudge Brownie Ice Cream

Dreyers LoadeD Chocolate Fudge Brownie Ice CreamFinding lower calorie ice creams in the supermarket aisles can be quite daunting. There are the Slow and Double Churned ice creams that we absolutely adore, but let me introduce you to Dreyer's LoadeD. Flavors like Butterfinger, Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup and Chocolate Fudge, which is the one I tried, may not sound like it's anything other than loaded with sugar and fat - but a quick glance at the nutrition facts show that it's similar to the churned, low fat ice creams.

This delectable frozen chocolate treat is packed full of chocolate fudge swirls and fudgy chocolate brownie chunks. Yes, I used the word chocolate 3 times in the prior sentence! Each bite is a rich and creamy delight! The fudgy chunks are noticeable and taste like someone diced up some fresh baked brownies and mixed them into the chocolaty creation! Furthermore, the fudge swirls add even more pizzazz!
