Helados Mexico All Natural Ice Cream Bars
I have always been a big ice cream fan, but generally have problems with portion control. Seriously, who can eat the 1/2 cup of ice cream that is usually listed as a serving? What I've been having more of instead of ice cream are ice cream bars - an easy way for me to limit the amount I eat while still being able to enjoy a creamy treat. Recently, I came across Helados Mexico All Natural Ice Cream Bars. They are based on paletas, which are essentially fruit or ice cream - a favorite in many Hispanic countries. Helados pops come in several flavors, one of which is mango. Mango flavored ice cream?? Woo-hoo! I paid $3.99 for a box of six and headed home.
I really, really enjoyed these ice cream bars. First off, they taste wonderful. They are sweet, but not too sweet, and you can really taste the mango. The consistency, aside from the little chunks of mango, is very creamy, not icy at all. They truly taste like mango ice cream on a stick. As an added bonus, these look really good ... sort of a swirly, pale peachy color. I'm a visual person so I like things that look pretty. They're also good sized- approximately the same size as an Edy's Frozen Fruit Bar. My kids loved these as well which means I'll probably have to resort to hiding them if I want any in the future.

Blue Bunny Ice Cream Bars products have gotten mixed reviews here on Iateapie.net. The Blue Bunny Orange Dream Bar got the 5 kiss seal of approval, while the Sweet Freedom Strawberry Lites Ice Cream Bar only got three stars. When I saw the Blue Bunny Health Smart Fudge & Vanilla Fudge Bar in a vending machine, I decided to get it and see whether it fell in the "excellent" or "so-so" category.
The individual bar I bought was $1.75 (horrendously expensive!) but that's what you get from buying it from a vending machine! I would think that the price for a box is much more reasonable. I reluctantly parted with my $$ and selected my ice cream bar. The packaging was very appealing, depicting a large, vanilla-fudge swirled bar; unlike so many other products, this was a realistic depiction. It was certainly much less icy than some other fudge bars I've had, and the chocolate was rich and not artificial tasting. Overall, I was highly impressed with how creamy and chocolaty this treat was, especially for a fat-free, no sugar added product.

The Weight Watchers Giant Chocolate Cookies and Cream Ice Cream Bar has low-fat chocolate ice cream covered with a cookie coating. The coating is crumbly and didn't really have much of a cookie taste, but the ice cream part is delicious, sweet creamy ice cream with a light chocolate flavor.
.
Like the name GIANT implies, these ice cream bars are large, 60% bigger than a normal fudge bar - 4 fluid ounces each. BUT fortunately for those of us trying to cut down on caloric intake, each bar only has 130 calories and 7% of the recommended daily amount of total and saturated fat. It's like built in portion control - enough to satisfy your craving, but low enough calories that you are not left with a guilty feeling or an expanding waistline.

Instead of an ice cream bar, Yoplait recently introduced a yogurt and cereal bar. There is an outer coating of cereal covering a rather thick middle layer of frozen yogurt. If there is one thing you should know about me from reading my reviews over the past year, is that I love Yoplait - love the fat-free yogurt and love the breakfast smoothies. BUT, while I didn't hate these cereal bars, I certainly don't think I will be buying them again.
The cereal outer layer tasted like cold cornflakes. It's not that it had a disgusting taste, it just felt wrong to be crunching on cornflakes while I was eating a frozen dessert. It might have been better if the cereal had been chocolate flavored, and perhaps not tasted so much like cornflakes - maybe Cocoa Puffs instead? The yogurt middle layer - which is low fat - really didn't have much flavor to it, even though it should have been strawberry. It also could have been a little sweeter in my opinion, and I also considered it to be too thick. But, maybe if it tasted better, I wouldn't complain about how much of it there was. I sure wasn't complaining when I reviewed Skinny Cow Ice Cream Sandwiches yesterday, and they were about the same thickness.

Blue Bunny says, "Our creamy strawberry, light ice cream sweetened with Splenda comes dipped in a rich chocolate coating for a taste that's big on flavor yet lower in calories." I say, this ice cream bar tastes okay. The flavor I chose to try was Strawberry Lites and I got only a very faint hint of any strawberry flavor at all. If I hadn't read the description on the box, I would have thought that this was vanilla.
You can immediately tell it's not as sweet as regular ice cream bars, but it's still sweet enough. They are promoting the fact that they use Splenda as the sweetener, but sugar alcohols (4 grams in each bar) are also used. There is also a slight aftertaste, which is not really bitter, but more like an unpleasant intense concentration of sweet compounds that's left over on the back part of your tongue. I had to drink some fluids after eating this ice cream bar to get rid of the 'left over taste.'

Damn, damn, damn, damn, damn!!!! Do you get how good this is yet?! This is so good, that only with lots of willpower can you only eat one at a time. Thank God the box only came with 6 bars. Is it the 'Double Churned" business - just what exactly is that anyway? Forget it - I don't care - it's something that makes Breyer's Vanilla and Almond Ice cream bars taste .... damn good! There is a chocolate coating over the vanilla ice cream part. This chocolate coating has the almonds in it, and somehow - although it's like a harder outer shell, it manages to melt as soon as you put it in your mouth. And the almonds just add an extra little crunchiness to the chocolate coating. This bar somehow manages to never get ice crystals on the outside, which is a problem I have with some ice cream bars and popsicles. The ice cream part is average, but really, put vanilla ice cream together with chocolate and almonds, and some 'double churning' and Breyers has a winner!
Blue Bunny Orange Dream Bar
If you're wondering what a Blue Bunny's 'dream bar' is, it's "Vanilla flavored reduced fat ice cream bar coated with orange sherbet." Sounds yummy doesn't it
. And it is!The orange sherbet, which is like the popsicle part on the outside, is delicious with a fruity orange flavor that really shines through. The middle is all lovely, smooth, creamy, rich vanilla ice cream made from reduced fat milk to keep the calories low.
