Trader Joe's Kalamata Olive Hummus

Trader Joe's Kalamata Olive HummusSince reviewing Tribe 40 Spices Hummus, one of my lunchtime staples, I have branched out into the world of hummus, trying different flavors and even attempting my own (which sadly, I am not talented at). I continue to be amazed at the diversity of hummus: it can be used as a dip for both crackers and veggies, and even incorporated into wraps and sandwiches nicely. Recently, I spotted Trader Joe's Kalamata Olive Hummus, a flavor I had yet to try. Intrigued, I snapped it up for a taste test.

I decided the best way to judge this snack would be alongside my old standby of baby carrots. Wow Trader Joe's Kalamata Olive Hummus! There are no other words. This hummus easily took the place of my old favorite. It's rich flavor, complete with little chunks of kalamata olives, paired easily with veggies and cracker alike. I even admit to dipping straight into the tub to get some of the savory yumminess, a feat I have not yet been tempted to do with any other hummus! The only minor complaint I have is that I wish this product came in a larger size.

Tribe Sweet Roasted Red Peppers All Natural Hummus

Tribe Sweet Roasted Red Peppers HummusAlthough people often eat hummus on top of crackers or pita bread, I like using hummus as a dip for baby carrots. Since I can be a voracious consumer of baby carrots, price is an important consideration in addition to the taste of the hummus. Tribe Sweet Roasted Red Peppers Hummus fits both bills for me.

This hummus has the traditional look and taste of hummus, but the small bits of red pepper give an extra bit of sweetness when you bite into one of them. The hummus has a reliable creamy but still mildly chunky texture that really complemented my carrots or any other foundation. Though natural roasted garlic flavor is included in the ingredient list (last), that flavor is very slight and virtually undetectable. Still, I really like the slight tartness amidst the mild flavor of hummus.

Tribe 40 Spices Hummus

Tribe 40 Spices HummusConfession time. I am completely a volume eater. I would much rather pack many different components to my lunches that keep me happily crunching for an extended period of time, instead of just a plain old sandwich. Therefore, baby carrots, pepper slices, and cherry tomatoes often appear as my "side dish" of choice. While veggies are great for crunch, sometimes they need a little kick to liven them up! I'd heard so much about the benefits of hummus (great protein source, creamy texture, good taste) that I decided to give it a try.

I settled on Tribe Hummus, which is available in several different flavors. My first attempt was with the 40 spices because it sounded exotic and yummy! When I finally tasted it, I was very impressed! The spread held up well to dipping (no drips), as well as spreading on pita rounds and bread. It lent a nice kick to my veggies, and also added staying power due to the protein and fat content. Since trying the 40 spices flavor, I have branched out to Scallion as well as Roasted Red Pepper. Both are excellent!

Sabra Sun Dried Tomato Hummus

Sabra Sun Dried Tomato Hummus
Sabra's Sun-dried Tomato Hummus caught my eye when I was shopping at my local Costco, mainly because it was being sold in an econo-sized 32 ounce tub. Can you tell that I love hummus! I make it myself or buy various brands, and I eat it at least once a week.

As with most other hummus varieties, the "main spice", in this case, the sun-dried tomatoes, were all dolloped on the top of the hummus, rather than being pre-mixed in. Figuring a little mingling was in order, I mixed the hummus all together a day before I tried it. When I did that, I could already tell how creamy this hummus is and I couldn't wait to try it. The flavor was superb. The sun-dried tomato flavor comes through, but it's not overwhelming. A pleasant taste of tahini accompanies it harmoniously too. I soon discovered that after devouring a quarter of the tub along with a good chunk of my pita chips, perhaps buying this huge tub was a giant mistake!

Trader Joes Chipotle Pepper Hummus

Trader Joes Chipotle Pepper HummusAfter reviewing Sabra Supremely Spicy Hummus, I was still on the hunt for something that was just as good in taste but had less calories per serving. In the comments, Seraph mentioned Trader Joe's. I didn't see the eggplant hummus that she (or he) recommended, so I decided to go for another spicy variety and I picked up Trader Joe's Chipotle Pepper.

Trader Joes hummus has no artificial flavors, preservatives or color - that bright orange color is not artificial! The taste is very flavorful, with the chipotle adding a robustness, but not a whole lot of spiciness. I should have paid closer attention to the packaging because I somehow missed that this was the Mild Smoky Flavor variety. And they are not kidding! This "chipotle" hummus just adds a whispered hint of a peppery taste! The peppery aroma is there, but you don't get much more than that. The texture is perfect - not too thick. This hummus is perfect if you are not a big fan of spicy foods.

Sabra Supremely Spicy Hummus

Sabra Spicy HummusMy first introduction to hummus was by way of Athenos Roasted Garlic Hummus. I liked the Athenos brand as an introduction, but it didn't rock my socks. I've been experimenting with a few brands and flavors since then, and I eventually came across Sabra Spicy Hummus.

Now I'm not a fan of very spicy foods, so I really surprised myself by picking this up, but sometimes it pays to get outside of your comfort zone - and this time it paid off big time! Sabra put all the spicy spices in the middle of the hummus - which is the best thing they could do. What this means for us wimps is that you can slowly mix in a little bit at a time, thereby adjusting the heat factor to get it just the way you like it. This hummus is thick and has a smooth texture - none of the pastiness that I found with Athenos.

Athenos Roasted Garlic Hummus

HummusUntil recently I really had no clue what hummus was. I had heard it mentioned by some vegetarians that I knew, and I decided to get to the bottom of this once and for all. Hummus is a dip made of chick pea paste with various spice additions, such as red peppers, garlic etc (Wikipeida definition). It is traditionally scooped up with flatbread (pieces of pita) to be eaten, but it is increasingly popular as a dip for tortilla chips. Vegetarians love this stuff, but what about us non-vegetarians who are just trying to eat healthy?! Well, I put it to the test with Athenos Roasted Garlic Hummus.

Athenos Hummus has the consistency of a smooth spreadable paste. I didn't have any Pita bread handy, so I tried it with Garden of Eatin Blue Chips. There was a slight underlying pasty taste - very subtle, but what is more obvious is the wonderful flavor of the roasted garlic and other seasonings. It was very tasty even on it's own, but for some unknown reason, I am just not a big fan. Maybe it's just because I am not used to eating hummus as yet.
