Ball Park Fat Free Beef Franks
Throughout the summer grilling season, I have become excellent at finding substitutions for fat laden meats. Instead of a burger, I have learned to love turkey or black bean burgers. Instead of steak, I will serve up a seasoned chicken breast. However, until I ran across Ball Park Fat Free Beef Franks, I had never found a good substitute for a nice, juicy hot dog. I had pretty much decided that the essential ingredient for hot dogs was fat, so I was very excited to try this new find.
I wasn't terribly impressed with the long ingredient list, but, hey, what can you expect from a hot dog? The taste, however, more than made up for the unnatural ingredients. I actually popped these suckers on my George Foreman Grill and cooked them that way. I put each dog on a slice of whole wheat bread, and was good to go. Even though they are not as good as the full fat Zweigle's dogs, I was sufficiently impressed, especially to the tune of 180 calories for two hot dogs!! (I used 40-calorie light wheat bread in lieu of a bun).

The latest 'applicant' in my quest for the perfect "meatless hot dog" is Quorn Meat Free Dogs. "Quorn" is made from a "mycoprotein" (a member of the fungi (or mold) family). That would make Quorn dogs suitable for vegetarians, except that this product also contains egg and milk ingredients. So if you are strictly vegan - this might not be for you.
This also might not be for you if you want something similar to a plump, juicy and tasty hot dog. Unfortunately Quorn dogs just don't make the cut. They are thin and wimpy and don't plump on cooking. The taste is bland and almost like cardboard and they cook to a very unattractive brown color.
So far, the best "meatless dog" I have reviewed is Morningstar Farms Veggie Dogs and I also love Morningstar Farms Corn Dogs
- but that's more of an after dinner snack. The worst I've tasted so far is Boca Soy Sausages - and Quorn dogs are not far behind.
Ball Park Bun Size Smoked White Turkey Franks
The good news about Ball Park Bun Size Smoked White Turkey Franks is that one turkey dog contains just 45 calories, no fat, 6 grams of protein, 5 grams total carbohydrates including 3 grams of sugars, but 18% of the recommended daily amount of sodium (420 mg). Compare that to the regular Ball Park franks that I had to put in diettrash [read it] with 180 calories each, 150 of which is from fat.
Now the bad news: the taste. It has a very salty taste, and that was the only flavor to it. I tried it on two different occasions just to make sure, and both times it was the same result. I know the folks over at hungry-girl liked them [link], but there are vegetarian 'meatless' hot dogs that taste better than this, like MorningStar Farms Veggie Dogs that has 80 calories per dog.

Who doesn't love a nice plump, juicy hot dog at the baseball game or at a cookout?! And let's face it, if you're at a barbecue, you're not going to eat just one! And aren't "Ball Park Franks" one of the best tasting hot dog franks out there?! Well, at 180 calories each, 150 of which are from fat - this has to go on my diettrash list!
There are 16 grams of fat in each frank, which is 25% of what you should eat daily, 6 grams of which are saturated fat - that's 30% of what sould be your daily total amount. You can also get 25% of what should be your sodium limit and throw in 13% of your daily cholesterol too! And you haven't even added the hot dog bun yet! That's another 120 calories [or more]! For a healthier alternative, I like Morningstar Farms Veggie Dogs [read the review].
Morningstar Farms Corn Dogs
Morningstar Farms veggie corn dogs are A++. In other words, great! And you're not just taking my word for it. I made one of my strictly carnivorous male friends taste one, and he loved it! First, the outer crust covering has a sweet, corn bread taste to it. Then the 'faux sausage' part in the middle tastes like meat, although it's made from soy. This is so good that it's hard to just have one - in fact, I had 2. There are two ways to make these corn dogs - 20 minutes in the oven, or 2 minutes in the microwave. I did it in the oven, so I'm not sure if it would taste different if done in the microwave.
Morningstar Farms Veggie Dogs
Morningstar Farms Veggie Dogs look like 'regular' meat wieners, and they taste just as good as well! After trying the Boca Soy Sausages which were not good - which is putting it mildly - I was skeptical about how these would taste. Luckily, I need not have worried because these cooked up almost as juicy, and certainly as tasty as all the other good hot dogs I've had. Most meat eaters will be able to detect a slight difference between these, and regular hot dogs, but I don't think it will be an issue.
