Chocolite Peanut Chews

Chocolite Peanut ChewsI've heard so much about Chocolite chocolates that I was incredibly excited when I saw them for sale at a little health foods store near me; after all, I wanted to be sure I liked them before ordering a bunch online! I decided to pick up the Chocolite Peanut Chews. If I could find a substitute for all those not-so-good-for-you chocolate goodies that sneak their way into my diet, I would be ecstatic. Plus I'm a big peanut fan, and chocolate goodies are amazing.

These are terrific. The peanut and chocolate flavors are great, and they're super chewy (beware if you have tooth problems). With all that fiber, they were a perfect - and satisfying - snack. Each pkg has 2 chews, but the nutrition facts is for only 1 chew - why do companies keep doing these asinine things. 2 pieces provides 60 calories, 2 grams of saturated fat or 10% of the daily value, 12 grams of fiber (48% of the DV) and no sugars, but 2 grams of sugar alcohols. ... continue reading »

Nutiva Organic Chocolate Hemp Shake

Nutiva Organic Hemp ShakeI have to admit, when I first saw Nutiva Organic Hemp Shake at Whole Foods, I was, shall we say, a little bit skeptical. I mean, Hemp Milk?! Well, one look at the packaging was enough to convince me that I should give this a chance. In the case of the Chocolate Shake I picked up for just 99 cents, one major standout nutrition fact was the fiber - 12 grams and 7 grams of protein from 1 shake!

With ingredients limited to organic hemp protein, superfood chocolate blend (organic Fair Trade Certified chocolate, organic ramon nuts, organic guar gum, inulin from chicory root, organic mesquite pods), organic Fair Trade Certified cane juice, and organic chocolate flavor, I wasn't expecting a pure chocolate flavor. Indeed, when I mixed my powdered shake mix with an 8-ounce glass of 8th Continent Light Soymilk, I found that the taste was good but also a bit nutty, just slightly sweet and a bit ... different. This is chocolate in name only, but it wasn't too bad.

ThinkThin Brownie Crunch Bar

ThinkThin Brownie Crunch Bar
When I pulled my ThinkThin Brownie Crunch Bar out of the wrapper, it looked almost exactly like a mainstream candy bar - you couldn't tell at all that it was packed with protein. The outside is a somewhat greasy milk chocolate, and when I broke it open, it looked like pure dark fudge brownie on the inside.

Biting into it revealed that it was chewy and squishy, just like a brownie, but had some kind of weird chalky aftertaste. I've noticed this aftertaste with other ThinkThin bars bars, and I'm not sure what it is, but I'm not a huge fan. Still, that didn't stop me from finishing the bar and enjoying it. The flavor grew on me a bit, and by the end I really didn't mind or notice the aftertaste at all.

In looking at other reviews for ThinkThin bars, I found that Lauren Ashley had reviewed the ThinkThin Chocolate Fudge Bar, and we basically could have just switched the titles and a lot of the details of this review would have been the same. I almost wonder if the company simply changed the name of the bar from Chocolate Fudge to Brownie Crunch, because there is sadly no crunch in this bar. However, I will add that while I keep saying negative things - it actually wasn't that bad, and I kind of liked it. The positives aren't very apparent, but trust me when I say this isn't a bad bar.

Doctor's CarbRite Diet Lemon Meringue Bar

Doctors CarbRite Diet Lemon Meringue BarOne of my most recent "foodie" discoveries is Doctor's CarbRite Diet Bars, and let me tell you, I'm so glad I have! These bars are sugar free (sweetened with sugar alcohols and no artificial sweeteners), but before you dismiss it - let me tell you, they are GOOD! I've had many of the flavors, but one I think I missed was the Lemon Meringue, which I spotted in the supermarket. Of course, curiosity got the better of me and I picked one up for $1.79.

I unwrapped the bar and took a bite as soon as I got home. This flavor, like the others I've tried, is delicious! The lemon is surprisingly natural-tasting, and the bar just melts in your mouth. Doctor's Carb Rite got it right in their description, in which they say:

Remember Grandma's lemon meringue pie? The zesty lemon filling topped with that sweet fluffy meringue browned around the edges just so? The pie melted in your mouth, overwhelming your taste buds with that sweet yet tangy flavor. Well our Doctor's CarbRite Diet Lemon Meringue bar brings back this old time classic-without the carbs, sugar or guilt. This high protein tasty treat is sure to be enjoyed by dieters everywhere.

I couldn't have said it any better myself.

Myoplex Lite Cinnamon Roll Crisp Bar

Myoplex Lite Cinnamon Roll Crisp BarI have found a new cinnamon roll alternative, and I can't even express how excited I am about it. I was in a rush before gym class today, and I stopped at the snack bar to grab a quick energy bar pre-workout. I settled on a Myoplex Lite Bar in Cinnamon Roll Crisp, shelling out a whopping $3.79 for it (I know I've seen it for much lower at drugstores). I wasn't sure what to expect, especially since Kashi GoLEAN Crunchy! Cinnamon Coffee Cake Bar is delicious - what are the odds that there would be 2 bars that could make me forget about indulging in real cinnamon rolls?!

What I DID know, however, was that with a name including the prefix "myo," which means "muscle," this probably had a lot of muscle-building protein. And it does! One 54 gram bar provides 190 calories, 15 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber (16% of the daily value). High protein and lots of fiber - yes!

As for taste ... this is FANTASTIC. The cinnamon roll flavor is perfectly sweet and spicy, and the "icing" part could have passed for the real thing! The texture of this bar was chewy and sticky, also remarkably similar to a real cinnamon roll. Furthermore, the size of the bar was very impressive with less than 200 calories - another plus.

Nature's Plus Spiru-tein High Protein Energy Meal Simply Natural Original Vanilla Protein Powder

Natures Plus Spirutein High Protein Energy Meal Simply Natural Original Vanilla protein PowderI'm a big fan of protein powders, for their nutrition as well as their versatility. The problem is some protein powders pack in hundreds of calories per serving. Not so with Nature's Plus Simply Natural Protein Powders. Each 32 gram serving of these unsweetened powders has just 80 calories. There are a few different flavors of the unsweetened stuff including Vanilla, Chocolate, Banana, Peaches & Cream, but the Vanilla flavor is my favorite.

Spiru-tein High Protein Energy Meal Simply Natural Vanilla Protein Powder is not sweetened so this allows you to add as much (or as little) sweetness as you like and in whatever form you want (Splenda, sugar, etc.). It tastes absolutely delicious when you add just a little bit of Splenda and it also combines well with other flavors, so it can be used in shakes as well as in oatmeal, pancakes, etc. I use this stuff all the time to add some additional protein and vitamins to my meals, so much so that I buy it from Vitacost.com for $23.27 for 1.63 lbs (way down from the suggested price of $36.75) plus shipping and handling. This is a worthwhile investment to me because it lasts for a long time (each 1.63-lb container has 32 servings).

Odwalla Super Protein Bar

Odwalla Super Protein BarWhile driving to work, I got stuck in horrible traffic, and realized I wouldn't have time to get breakfast in the company cafeteria before my first meeting. I reached for a bar in my bag and came up with the Odwalla Super Protein Bar.

I was pleasantly surprised when I opened up the package as it looked more like a crumbly cookie instead of a smooth bar. I took a bite, and discovered that it tasted just like it looked. I would compare it to a very dense Oatmeal Raisin Cookie. It was a fairly pleasing flavor, however, the big thing to note is how DRY this bar is! I wasn't thirsty at all before I had it, but after one bite, I was parched, and had no water to wash it down. When I got to the office, I sucked down 1/2 bottle of water within five minutes of arriving, and still didn't really feel my thirst had been quenched. Definitely don't eat this without water handy!

Jay Robb's Whey Protein Powder

Jay Robb Protein PowderOften times, protein powders can be gritty, clumpy, too sweet, not sweet enough, too thick, or too watery. Some cause gas and bloating, while others tend to leave you hungry-almost defeating their purpose. I would like to consider myself an expert when it comes to shakes and smoothies (my blender would second that opinion and my past health food store jobs were working the juice bar). Needless to say, I have made MANY protein shakes and have samples MANY protein powders.

My newest obsession is Jay Robb's Whey Protein Powder. Sweetened with Stevia and made from cows that haven't been treated with rBGH, this stuff is delicious! It mixes instantly and creates such a creamy shake, you almost forget it is good for you. Being a protein shake addict, I have tried all the flavors by Jay Robb's: Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, Tropical Dreamsicle (think orange and cream), and Pina Colada. All of them were very good, with excellent texture but vanilla and chocolate are my favorites.

Balance Almond Brownie Bar

Balance Almond Brownie BarWaking up at 6:30 AM on the weekend to attend a cheese making event with my Food Science club involves me hitting the snooze button multiple times, getting ready with the speed of light and grabbing breakfast to eat on my way to the car (fun, huh?!). Thankfully, I had recently purchased a Balance Almond Brownie Bar to not only satisfy my hunger, but entertain my taste buds.

I have never had a Balance Bar before, so I was excited to finally give it a go. As I was unwrapping my "meal on the go", I realized that it looked similar to a Larabar, with a uniform brown color with visible chunks of almonds dispersed throughout the chewy block. The texture of the bar is similar to a dense chewy brownie (definitely a plus), but has this obviously chalky background (the negative). The nuts added a welcomed, yet subtle crunch and the chocolate was ... well, sweet chocolate.

Starbucks Power Protein Plate

Starbucks Power Protein PlateContinuing my Starbucks kick armed with new information and new product choices, I decided to try the protein plate after a particularly difficult day at the gym. After all, since protein helps repair muscles post-exercise, this product seemed perfect for me. What exactly comprises this assortment of goodies, you may ask? One $4.95 package contains a cage-free hard-boiled egg, a mini whole wheat bagel with a packet of peanut butter, a couple pieces of white cheddar cheese, apple slices, and a bunch of grapes, all for a satisfying 330 calories.

But how does it taste? The grapes were fresh and the apple slices surprisingly crisp (this is a packaged good, after all). The egg was not overdone (a problem I often find with other pre-cooked, packaged eggs), and the bagel with peanut butter was good as well, if a little dry.

Slim Fast Caramel Protein Snack Chews

This review was done by Sanam Bhatia. Sanam is a Development Studies Major at UC Berkeley. She loves to try the latest innovative health foods and find alternatives to classic comfort treats. While she has the ultimate sweet tooth, her goal is to maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle.

Slim Fast Caramel Protein Snack ChewsSlim Fast is the latest company to get hit by the 100 calorie bug. In an attempt to portion control and nutritionize (not a real word, I know) a delicious treat, Slim Fast has stuck five little caramel squares in a packet, and is marketing them as Slim Fast Protein Snack Chews. They are available in Peanut Butter and Caramel, which is the one that I tried.

Each "chew" measures is about 1 x 1 inch and comes individually wrapped in yellow paper, which really frightened me when I initially opened the package because I thought each chew was the unnatural yellow. It was very soft, not a tougher taffy which I actually would have preferred to make each piece last longer. It had a grainy texture and the flavor reminded me of a good cookie. I had only planned on only eating one, then I ate the next, and another, till I had powered through the whole pack in just a few minutes.

Balance Gold Rocky Road Protein Bar

Balance Gold Protein BarLet me get this out of the way first: Balance Gold Rocky Road protein bar tastes ah-mazing! This bar is a sinfully delicious combination of chocolate, marshmallows and nuts. Call it smooth, sweet, chocolatey goodness in a candy protein bar.

Balance Gold is a high protein bar which is supplemented with 23 vitamins and minerals. One bar is 50 grams and has 210 calories, 13 grams of protein, 7 grams of total fat which is 11% of the recommended daily amount, 20% of the RDA for saturated fat (7 grams - ouch) and 24 grams of total carbohydrates which includes only 1 gram of fiber and 16 grams of sugar. There is also 25-50% of the RDA of over 20 vitamins and minerals (100% of vitamin C and E).

Odwalla Super Protein MatchaLicious Drink

Odwalla Matchalicious Super Protein DrinkIf you've ever wanted to know what real, unaltered soy milk tastes like, then look no further than Odwalla Super Protein Matcha-Licious. Odwalla didn't bother trying to get rid of the naturally beany taste of soy milk. Instead they chose to embrace it in a "close to Mother Earth" organic kind of way. Plus they added "matcha" which is another name for ground green tea leaves - more proof that this drink is probably as close as you will ever get to grinding up and milking plants.

I'll be honest and say that I drank just a few mouthfuls before I tossed this. To put it simply - this is just gross. There is an overwhelming green, grassy taste and aroma. I'm willing to sacrifice some taste in order to eat more nutritiously, but there are only 10 grams of protein per serving in this. That amount is readily available in meat (chicken or tuna) or beans - "super protein" they say - I think not!

Ensure High Protein Shake

EnsureEnsure is one of the popular choices of dietitians, especially for their older clients and hospital patients, because it contains almost every vitamin and mineral known to man. Okay, so that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but there are a LOT of vitamins and minerals in Ensure High Protein Shake - actually more than you could get from any one multi-vitamin. One 8 ounce bottle of Ensure will give you 230 calories, but like the bottle says, it is a MEAL REPLACEMENT. There are also 6 grams of fat, and 0.5 grams saturated fat, 19 grams of sugar and 12 grams of protein.

South Beach Diet High Protein Cereal Bars: Cranberry Almond

South Beach Diet Cereal Bars I'll just get right to the point here, the South Beach Cranberry Almond Bar tastes great and deserves 5 stars all around. It's crispy and the cranberries provide a nice contrast, not your typical protein bar. There was obviously lots of cranberry pieces throughout the bar, but not so obvious were the almond chunks, probably because they are the same color as the bar itself.

Nutritionally this bar will give you 140 calories, so treat it like a big part of breakfast, or as a snack by itself. You also get 5 grams of fat with 2 grams from saturated fat (10% of your daily requirement), no trans fat, only 135 mg sodium (about 5% of the daily value), 115 mg potassium, 3 grams of dietary fiber (12% of the RDA), 7 grams of sugar along with 3 g sugar alcohol and 10 grams of protein. There is also 10 - 20% of 10 vitamins and minerals.
