There was a 2-day flu bug going around recently, and I was one of the (un)lucky ones who got it. I felt awful, but knew I needed to try to eat something that I could keep down. Luckily, I remembered Dole's Strawberry Fruit 'N Juice Frozen Fruit Bars, which my mom used to give me when I was a kid and got sick.

The bars are a beautiful bright red color (yay for the natural color of strawberries) and a fairly uniform shape (boo for probably more juice than fruit). Despite the uniform outer shape of the bar, there are large chunks of strawberries inside. The taste is delicious - very sweet, like pure strawberry goodness. It's not a fake strawberry taste - it really tastes like you're just biting into a frozen strawberry that's perfectly ripe and sweet.

Edy's Whole Fruit Lime Fruit Bars

Edys Whole Fruit Lime Fruit BarsIf you like limeade (or lemonade, for that matter), you've got to try Edy's Whole Fruit Lime Fruit Bars. These bars have so much going for them: they're huge (each weighs in at a full 85 grams), they're delicious, and they're low-calorie. Furthermore, for those who avoid artificial sweeteners, you can rest assured that these don't contain any of that stuff.

I was first turned onto Edy's fruit bars by my dad. He gets the strawberry ones, but I've always been partial to citrus, so I bought a 6-pack box of the lime ones for $3.49 from FreshDirect (a NY grocery delivery company). The lime flavor was spot-on (probably because it contains real lime juice!), and it wasn't overly sweet. Some of the thoughts going though my head as I ate one of these bars: refreshing and tart, perfect to both quench my thirst AND satisfy my sugar craving, so delicious woohoo.

Trader Joe's All Natural Cape Gooseberry Fruit Bar

Trader Joe's All Natural Cape Gooseberry Fruit BarOn a recent trip to Trader Joe's, I noticed their line of all natural fruit bars. What caught my eye was that these bars are made by grinding the fruit into a paste and drying into this form that you see. No fillers or anything else has been added. There were some interesting flavors, and unlike fruit leathers and fruit roll ups, these bars have less sugar. I picked the Cape Gooseberry bar to try first because, honestly, this fruit was new to me, and what's the fun of being a food product reviewer if you aren't going to jump at the chance to try new things.

Cape Gooseberry is a naive fruit of South America (check out the Wiki article for more information), and the flavor of the bar was a delicious combination of tangy and slightly sweet. The bar looks like it has lots of tiny seeds but I didn't taste them and they certainly didn't detract from the taste - if anything it added to the natural vibe of the product. I enjoyed this bar immensely and would highly recommend it for a change of pace from syrupy sweet fruit (and fake fruit) bars.

Edys Smoothie Real Fruit and Frozen Yogurt Bars

Edys Smoothie Real Fruit and Yogurt BarsIt's been a hot and humid week, and after the 3rd day I decided it was time to hit up the supermarket and purchase some snacks that would help me beat the late night heat. I grabbed the Strawberry-Banana variety of Edy's Smoothie Real Fruit and Yogurt Bars, and tried it later that night. It was absolutely heavenly.

The bars have a smooth, creamy, rich taste that made me moan with pleasure. And Edy's backs up their "real fruit" statement on their packaging by making strawberries the 2nd item on the ingredients list. But my mouth and taste buds can also confirm this, because I was reveling in the strawberry pieces that would appear at just the right moment to add a fruity finish to what is a perfect way to cool out on a hot summer night.

Edys Frozen Coconut Fruit Bars

Edy's Frozen Coconut Fruit BarsI am nuts about coconut! Give me a pina colada anytime, anywhere and I am a content girl. Therefore, when I with spotted the Edy's Frozen Coconut Fruit Bars in the freezer case of my local Albertsons Supermarket, I was giddy with excitement. I was actually so excited that I couldn't wait until I got home to try them so as soon as I got in my car, I ripped open the box and pulled a bar out.

My first impression was a positive one because the bars were of substantial size, not like some of the other wimpy little frozen fruit bars that are on the market. As I tore open the plastic wrapper, I was totally pumped about being greeted with the heavenly aroma of coconut! (OK, maybe a little bit of that smell was in my head but there was definitely some coconut notes wafting through the air). The Edy's Coconut bars also look really enticing; They are a perfect 'coconut white' color and you can actually see the little bits of coconut throughout the bar. And now for the taste: Oh joyous coconut, how ever do I love thee? YES, YES, YES! Smooth, creamilicious, and coconutti-ful is the best way that I can describe these bars. They are full of delicious bits of coconut. I am truly surprised that I managed to navigate back home because I was in such a state of coconut euphoria. I am totally in love with these bars and am not ashamed to say that one box containing 6 bars lasted me about 3 days!

Edys No Sugar Added Frozen Fruit Bars

Edys Fruit BarsThere is an intense heat wave going on through the Eastern US and it is hot hot hot! I am drinking a lot of water, Snapple White Tea, and these Edy's No Sugar Added Frozen Fruit Bars are the perfect evening "cool me down" treat. Perfect is such a strong definitive statement - but it's not too strong a description for bars that are only 30 calories each. Also, there is no fat, and only 8 grams of total carbohydrates which includes 1 gram of fiber, 2 grams of sugars and 2 grams of sugar alcohols - low carbs. There's not a lot of sugars, and no artificial sweeteners, so the popsicles are not very sweet, but they have a strong taste of the fruit flavors, such as strawberry, tangerine and raspberry, which came in the pack that I bought.

The packaging on the Edy's has quite a few claims and accolades. Of course, the label says "Made with Real Fruit." and "Loaded with Fruit." A check of the ingredients reveals that strawberries is the 2nd ingredient in the strawberry flavored bar, and all the bars use a variety of fruit puree and concentrates. This Edy's product also received the "American Culinary ChefsBest award for best taste" and these bars are "an excellent source of vitamin C" and each bar does have 25% of the daily value of vitamin C.

Luigis Real Italian Ice

Luigis Real italian IceItalian Ice is kind of like flavored shaved ice or snow cones, in case you're wondering (I know I was). But, according to the Wiki Encyclopedia, Italian Ice is way more than just syrup added to ice. It has a much smoother and softer texture than shaved ice, and the flavoring, which is usually fruit juices, are mixed in and frozen with the ice, rather than right before you buy it, like when you do snow cones and shaved ice.

I bought Luigi's Italian Ice, threw it in the freezer, and the next night, I realized my dilemma. The thing was frozen solid - harder than a rock! I hadn't thought of that, but thank goodness for directions. At the bottom of the side panel it tells you, "To soften, if desired - Microwave!" Duh - I would have thought of that eventually. In 15 seconds, it was still hard, but soft enough for me to start digging in!

And dig in I did, because Luigis is dee-lish! (delicious if you don't get my abbreviation). The ice was smooth going in and oh so fruity. Eating one 6 ounce cup took me about 10 minutes - spooning the ice, sucking on it and thoroughly enjoying it - the longer something lasts, the less you'll feel like grabbing something else to continue snacking.
