Bloom Energy Drink
I was never a heavy coffee drinker until close to the end of graduate school when staying up all night was a necessity, and I can still remember the weird, hyper, jittery feeling I got when I drank my first few energy drink! Unfortunately, my body is now used to way more caffeine than it should be, so I have recently committed to no longer shocking my system with those massive amounts of caffeine from energy drinks like Rush (Lite). But there are times when you can find me up late working on this website (and Inthegym.net) and I still need a little help keeping my eyes open (especially the next day), so I was glad when I saw that Del Monte is now making Bloom Energy Drink: 50% fruit juice and the caffeine (74 mg per can) is mostly from white tea with a little help from guarana seed extract.
Bloom Energy Drink is "specially formulated for women" (whatever that means) and comes in 3 flavors, Mango Passionfruit, Cran Raspberry and Wild Berry (which has raspberry, acai and pomegranate fruit juice concentrates). Each can has one full serving of fruit and is "antioxidant rich" according to the manufacturers, but I don't seen a value for just how much antioxidant is in each can. The taste is sweet and slightly tart from the carbonation. It is definitely less harsh and better tasting than most energy drinks and there was definitely a "perk me up" effect that kept me away from my usual after-work coffee. I liked all the flavors really, but Cran Raspberry is my favorite one.

There is a lot of buzz about Enviga - and it hasn't even come out to the market yet. It is slated for release in November 2006, but IateApie had got you covered with a revview. Enviga is a joint effort between Coca Cola and Nestle. The main selling point is that it is a calorie burning drink due to "a combination of green tea and caffeine in a drink that invigorates metabolism to increase calorie burning."
There are many skeptics and here are my thoughts:
So how does it taste? Enviga Sparkling Green Tea tastes more like an energy drink than a traditional soda. There are 3 flavors: peach, berry and green tea. I liked the green tea flavor the least - and the peach and berry flavors do little to mask the strong limey, energy drink /caffeine taste. I didn't like the taste at first, but when I was unknowingly reaching for the 2nd can that day, I realised two things: 1). I got used to the taste quite quickly and actually didn't mind it; and 2). I was influenced by the marketing hype about burning calories because by God, I will take any help I can get!
Do I believe it burns calories? According to Coca Cola, your body will burn 60-100 more calories from drinking 3 cans of Enviga daily (there is no effect if you drink more). I would like to see more studies to prove the effect. The one they cite involves only 35 people - come on scientists, you know you can't draw conclusions from such a small study. Check out this [link] for more details about the study. But I do believe it is possible and since a 12 ounce can of Enviga is only 5 calories, it's not like you are going to be ingesting a lot of calories anyway.
Will you lose weight by drinking this? Absolutely not. Hit the gym people! But, if you exchange 3 cans of regular soda for this, you are saving more than 200 calories per day.

I was checking out the energy drinks in the store in hopes of finding something cheap that would keep me up for a while. There was Rush Energy Lite drink marked down to 98 cents. How could I resist? The design on the can is very unimpressive - it looks like something that should normally cost less than a dollar. This product has been around since at least 2003 - 2 years ago - somebody please tell them to hire a new product designer and reformulate the packaging since it seems like they are currently using an amateur.
However, that's not what matters at the moment. What is important is the fact that it costs less than a dollar and I needed a 'legal' pick me upper. This drink certainly does what it says - gives you a RUSH! Within minutes after finishing the can, I felt like I was bouncing off the walls. I was so hyper I didn't even know what to do with myself. Not only did I stay up until 2 AM, but I was awake and ready to go a short 3 hours later at 5AM. I am NOT a morning person - and by 'morning' I mean I don't like to open my eyes before 8AM - so for me to be up at 5 and out of the apartment by 6 AM is a major feat!
The taste is slightly tart and citrusy which translates to pretty good. You certainly don't miss the sugar, which they have replaced with the sweeteners sucralose (Splenda) and acesulfame K. Then there is the fact that you get 0 calories.

If you have never heard of the energy drink 'Red Bull' here's a little tidbit from the website: Red Bull is supposed to 'improve performance, concentration and reaction speed, vigilance, emotional status and stimulate metabolism.' Sounds like a miracle to me! The original Red Bull has a 'tart' or 'limey' or you could say 'tangy' flavor, which I quite like. It almost tastes like wine cooler without the wine. It is not too sour and not sweet at all, even though it has 27 g sugar per can. Now they have made it sugar free with 0 g sugar which has also lowered the calorie content from 110 to only 10. The new sugar-free Red Bull tastes pretty similar to the original, but it does seem to be a bit more tart, and I still drank the entire bottle - every last drop.
