Wasa Light Rye Crispbread

Wasa Light Rye CrispbreadI first heard about the all natural Wasa crackers from my former college roommate a long time ago, so it was with greedy anticipation that I scooped up a few packages when I found a small selection of Wasa crackers in the non-traditional snack section of the supermarket. I chose to try Wasa Light Rye Crispbread because of it's ultra low 30 calories per slice (compared to the usual 45).

By my visual estimation, each slice was roughly the size of a 3x5 index card and had a cross-section that reminded me of corrugated cardboard, but beyond that, there were no more reminders of paper products. True to their name, the crackers were very light and crisp, and I really liked the wholesome rye taste. I really liked how these didn't depend on a drench of oil or salt to enhance the crackers. How do you Wasa? I Wasa with hummus, cucumbers and salsa.

Triscuit Hint of Salt

Triscuit Hint of SaltYou're looking at a fan of Triscuits here, however, even I have to agree that my beloved Triscuit Thin Crisps can be quite salty for some taste buds (including my own from time to time). Therefore, when I saw Triscuit Hint of Salt, they seemed just simple enough to be fantastic.

If you have ever had a regular Triscuit, then note that nothing has changed with the texture and shape of these crunchy, woven masterpieces. They are a nice-sized, dense square of tightly woven strands of whole wheat held together by soybean and/or palm oil and seasoned with only a hint of salt - yes, there is a mere 3 ingredients what a shocker! I have come to find that products that utilize fewer ingredients to the fullest of their capabilities always come out on top (take De Wafelbakkers Buckwheat Berry Pancakes with Flaxseed as an example). The hint of salt makes for the ideal seasoning and is anything but overpowering ... it's basically perfect.

Genisoy Sweet Crisps Chocolate

Genisoy Sweet Chocolate CrispsI went to the vending machine today to pick out some fruit crisps, but there were none to be found. Scanning the shelves to find a substitute, my eyes hit upon Genisoy Sweet Crisps in Chocolate. The picture on the front showed little crispy squares drizzled with chocolate - looks delicious. I was especially drawn to the package on seeing the "Smart Snacking" label on the front, detailing the 3 grams of protein, 90 calories, and 0 mg of cholesterol per serving.

I opened the bag (rather loudly in the middle of class) and examined the contents. I was pleased with the number of crisps (twenty or more), each around the size of a half dollar (only they're square). I popped one into my mouth, and my first thought was, Yum yummy! They're crispy and slightly salty with a healthy drizzle of chocolate on each one. There is even a little kick of cinnamon at the end of each bite. My salty and sweet cravings were completely satisfied.

Wheat Thins 5 Grain Fiber Selects

Wheat Thins 5 Grain Fiber SelectsI love Wheat Thins for their slightly sweet wheat taste mixed with the supplemental salt on the surface. I usually get the Reduced Fat version, but I saw the "new" label on these Wheat Thins 5 Grain Fiber Selects and decided to give them a try. They boasted, "5 grams of fiber per serving" and this variety was made from whole grain flour unlike some other Wheat Thins (like Wheat Thins Veggie Chips).

The crackers have a hexagonal shape that's slightly larger than the regular size of the regular Wheat Thins squares but still have the light sprinkling of salt on top. I didn't break out the calipers, but it seemed like these crackers may be slightly thicker than the regular Wheat Thins, but they had all the crunch and munch with the added bonus of all the grains.

Back to Nature Honey Graham Sticks

Back to Nature Honey Graham SticksGraham Crackers rock my World, but the partially hydrgenated oils found in some brands like Honey Maid, have left me looking for other alternatives. I usually opt for an "all natural" alternative, and after discovering Annie's All Natural Honey Bunny Grahams, I also realized that my graham cracker fix" could come in lots of different forms - graham bunnies, and now graham cracker sticks courtesy of Back to Nature Honey Graham Sticks.

The element that is most intriguing about Back to Nature Honey Graham Sticks is that one serving is 14 sticks that are the length of a long ice cube (that means longer snacking time!). They taste exactly like a graham cracker should - sweet, but not too sweet, with a nice crunch and light honey after taste. Each stick has a thin layer of sugar over the top that does not add much to the mouth feel, but does add a special element to the appearance.

Quaker Cinnamon Sugar Multigrain Minis

Quaker Cinnamon Sugar Multigrain MinisQuaker Cinnamon Sugar Multigrain Minis should not be confused with Quaker Cinnamon, Sugar & Oats Morning Minis (which were previously reviewed) nor Quaker Mini Delights - having so many products with similar names makes me think Quaker has so many products - even they can't keep track of what is in their product line. The fact that the Multigrain Minis also NOT listed on Quaker's website also seems to support my conclusion. Nevertheless, I spotted them in my local grocery store, and decided to give these "rice cake look-alikes" a chance.

From the packaging and location in the supermarket, the Quaker Cinnamon Sugar Multigrain Minis look like regular rice cakes, however, they are made from whole grain corn, oats, and brown rice and boast some nutritional benefit. These Multigrain Minis have the typical diameter of a mini rice cake although they are much flatter. I enjoyed the crunchy texture, and noticed that they don't produce as many crumbs as rice cakes. The cinnamon sugar combination provides a sharp but mellow sweetness for the minis, which I must say I thoroughly enjoyed. They were so good that it was hard to eat just one serving.

Wheat Thins Reduced Fat Country French Onion

Wheat Thins Reduced Fat Country French OnionWhen I go for Wheat Thins, I always go for the Reduced Fat variety to minimize the snacking damage. One of the newer flavors, Wheat Thins Reduced Fat Country French Onion had me really curious about the taste - even though the packaging really emphasized the reduced fat (30% less fat than the original Wheat Thins) and whole grain aspects of the snack (6 grams of whole grain per serving).

The crackers appeared to be the same size and had the same crunch as the traditional Wheat Thins, however, they had extra green specks that are probably parsley, and you can really taste the onion flavor. I know Wheat Thins are usually rather salty, but this variety was WAY salty from all that additional flavor. One of the things I usually like about Wheat Thins is the mild sweetness that comes from the cracker itself, but the French Onion flavor really covers it up. The flavor is so strong that I couldn't eat as many as I usually do in one sitting - which can be interpreted as both a good or bad thing.

GG Scandinavian Bran Crispbread

GG Scandinavian Bran CrispbreadGG Scandinavian Crispbread was a last minute add-on to my last groceries. These looked like nutrition powerhouse, with 5 grams of fiber (20% of the daily recommendations) per cracker. I have a thing for fiber, as in, I like it a lot. My absolute favorite cereal is Fiber One. On top of that, I eat fruits and veggies in massive quantities every day, and the pitas I get contain fiber as well. I get more than the recommended amount, unlike the majority of America, yet I am still somehow attracted to fiber-ific foods, and just new healthy products in general, and enjoy trying them out.

I had high hopes for this treat, but found myself fairly disappointed. I took my first bite, and cardboard was what came to my mind. Well, a mix of cellophane and cardboard. It was incredibly crunchy, dry, and hard to chew. My mouth was dried out in two seconds flat. I put some mustard on, which didn't help. Then I tried it with salsa, and it simply tasted like salsa on cardboard. When I literally soaked it through in the salsa, the taste and texture improved slightly, but I was still not impressed. It seems the only way to enjoy this is to have it heavily altered, damp, and with a good amount of toppings to mask the flavor. But why go to such lengths to alter something you don't like? I am of the staunch opinion that eating should be something one enjoys.

Wasa Crisp 'n Light 7 Grain CrackerBread

Wasa Crisp 'n Light 7 Grain CrackersWasa Hearty Rye Crispbread have already received raved reviews here, so let me tell you about another great tasting Wasa product: Wasa Crisp 'n Light 7 Grain CrackerBread. These are my go-to crackers.

True to their name, they are both crispy and light, but not cardboard-y like some of the other "crisp" crackers I've tasted. They don't really have a flavor, but I think they taste pretty good by themselves, although they are the perfect cracker to top with cheese, cold cuts, jam, cream cheese ... you get the idea.

Mr. Wheat's Honey Crispy Wheat

Mr. Wheat Crispy WheatI saw these on the shelf next to the elevator at Fairway on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. It looked like a clearance rack, but turned out to be a few newly arrived products. They were bags holding what looked like a cross between rice cakes and flatbreads. The label read Mr. Wheat's Crispy Wheat, and toted the contents as healthy, all-natural whole-grain puffed wheat snacks packed with fiber. The bags came in three colors corresponding to the different flavors: Plain (whitish), Sea Salt (blue), and Honey (yellow), which is the variety that I picked up.

Upon reaching the checkout counter, I noted that I was charged $2.29 for the bag with 16 rice cakes, which is a bit more than I would pay for rice cakes but definitely not a wild expense. On the nutrition label, the stats are listed, not for each cake, but for each serving, which was a surprising SEVEN of these large wafers, and only contained 110 calories and 1 gram of fat.

When I finally tried the cakes, they were not bad, though admittedly slightly underwhelming. The texture is somewhat like rice cakes, but thinner, and one large piece instead of a bunch of little pieces stuck together. They are very crispy, and kind of melt in your mouth like a wafer. The honey flavor gives them a slight hint of natural sweetness, I do, however, wish they were just a little bit sweeter, as I was almost reminded of cellophane when I first tried them. Because of this, I recommend being creative with them rather than eating them plain. They work great as a healthy base for toppings like cream cheese, nut butters, jelly or even make a yummy pizza with them.

True North Pistachio Crisps

True North Pistachio CrispsMy local Wal-Mart has recently undergone a major renovation. In other words, they repainted the walls, slapped some new tile on the floor and moved everything around so I can no longer find anything! As I'm searching in vain for some soy chips, I stumbled across True North Pistachio Crisps. I like soy chips because they're crunchy like a potato chip, but generally contain fewer calories, are baked and contain significant amounts of protein and fiber. According to the True North bag, these crisps appear to share those same attributes and all with no preservatives, artificial flavors or colors. I scanned the ingredient list and found that, shockingly, pistachios are actually the first thing listed (I hate when you buy something and what should be the primary ingredient is way down the list meaning there is very little of that thing in the actual product).

I opened up the bag, which has one of those handy resealable ziplock features, and took out a crisp. They're an octogan-ish shape and crushed pistachios can be seen throughout. Now the taste test ... these are really, REALLY good. You can taste the pistachios and they have a nice crispness to them. The oil from the nuts keeps them for being too dry like a baked chip, but they're not greasy like a potato chip. After about the fifth or sixth chip I started to think maybe they're a tad over salted - but still, yummy. Oh, and as an aside, my kids, even the ultra picky toddler, liked these as well.

Barbara's Snackimals Vanilla Animal Cookies

Barbaras Vanilla Snackimals Animal CookiesEver since I bit into my first animal cracker I fell in love (although I never understood why they were called crackers when they tasted like cookies). However, the majority of animal crackers contain some type of partially hydrogenated oil, which I am doing my best to avoid. Therefore, when I found Barbara's Snackimals Vanilla Animal Cookies, the child in me snatched them right up. Snackimals are made with the highest quality natural and organic ingredients and contain none of the artificial flavors, colors, preservatives or trans fats found in old-fashioned animal cookies.

First off, these are definitely cookies and not crackers. They are flatter than the average animal 'cracker' and therefore, crispier and less flaky. The taste is not over-the-top stellar, but does represent the wholesome ingredients that go into these crunchy little guys. To improve upon the taste I would prefer a slightly sweeter cookie and personally, I am not sure if I thoroughly enjoy the vanilla flavor which is more of a light aftertaste.

Nabisco Barnum's Animals Choco Cracker

Nabisco Barnums Animals Choco CrackerWe are not in the habit of revieweing 100 calorie pack products, because they are usually not worth the extra cash you pay for what turns out to be a small serving. However, munching on the cute (and sweet) little camel, lion, elephant, monkey, panda bear and giraffe of the Nabisco Barnum's Animals Choco Cracker brought out the inner kid in me, and I had to review these. The taste is fantastic - your kids will love them and the portion size is just right ... for kids. For you, the colored bag houses little animal cracker critters that are a delight to munch on. They are like the are like the big, fat brother of Nabisco Oreo 100 calorie packs - thick, yet crispy and airy on the inside like an animal cracker should be and, of course, they will put you in chocolate heaven for a short moment.

The fun ends way too soon as there's only about 13 small cookies per bag, just not enough for an adult snackaholic like myself. But it's great when accompanied by something else, a steaming hot cup of tea perhaps, or crumbled on top of yogurt.

Stauffers All Natural Animal Crackers

Stauffers All Natural Animal CrackersI was looking at my options in the snack aisle and came across an unfamiliar box of Stauffers Animal Crackers. I went to the company website and found that I had these before, just in a different packaging. When I ate them, though, I thought they were a new product and found myself amazed at how tasty they were.

The animal crackers don't look like anything special. They appear beige and shaped like animals, but their mild sweetness and crunch are quite pleasant. In fact, the box itself describes them as "fun, wholesome, and delicious!" The animal crackers are also all natural, which can be interpreted to be a plus.

Annie's All Natural Honey Bunny Grahams

Annies All Natural Honey Bunny GrahamsI, like many others, enjoy a crunchy sweet ending to a meal or as a simple snack to get me through the day. However, finding a well balanced and tasty treat is not always easy. You can officially stop searching and start seeking out Annie's All Natural Honey Bunny Grahams. Each bunny shaped cracker is about the size of a Pepperidge Farm Whole Grain Cheddar Goldfish Crackers and tastes exactly like a good Graham Cracker should; subtly crunchy with a delightfully sweet honey taste infused into a wholesome wheat base.

The nutrition information for these guys is almost perfect. After munching on 30 little addicting cookies (30 grams), you will have consumed 130 calories, 4 grams of fat (6% of the RDA), no saturated fat or cholesterol, 160 mg of sodium (7% of the RDA), no fiber, only 6 grams of sugar and 2 grams of protein. Sesmark Original Sesame Thins

Sesmark Original Sesame ThinsMost "Sesmark" products include sesame (hence the name), and since I've always been enamored with various nuts and seeds - peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, and yes, sesame seeds, when I saw a pack of Sesmark's Original Sesame Thins on a display, I decided to give these thin wafers a whirl.

Sesmark crackers are baked, all natural, and free of trans fats, hydrogenated oils, cholesterol, and preservatives. The tightly wrapped packaging on these is definitely necessary because even through most of my wafers were in tact, quite a few were cracked in half - I can't imagine how these would fair in a box. I topped a few with a little Tahini - it seemed like the natural accompaniment - and took a bite. The wafer didn't crumble after being bitten into, which was a pleasant surprise. The flavor is a wonderful blend of nutty roasted sesame with just a touch of salt, but there was also a hint of a burnt taste - several seeds where almost blackened, lending an unwelcome though tolerable bitterness.

Doctor Kracker Organic Pumpkin Cheese Snack Flat

My dad eats at Jason's Deli quite frequently to grab a quick lunch and get back to work. Today, he noticed a new addition to the cracker section, Doctor Kracker Organic Pumpkin Cheese Snack Flats. Since they had the word "Organic" in the title, he thought of me (thanks Dad).

I am a very lucky girl because these crackers are absolutely delicious. Each "snack flat" possesses a firm snap, after which you discover the array of airy layers that are part of this savory cracker. Atop the base of sesame seed, flax and whole wheat lies organic cheddar cheese and organic pumpkin seeds, both of which add to the robust flavor. The cheese creates a taste that is similar to the original Goldfish crackers or Cheez-it. Overall, the taste of Dr. Kracker's creation deserves a 5 lip-smacking rating for taste.

Pepperidge Farm Baked Naturals Wheat Crisps

Pepperidge Farm Baked Naturals Wheat CrispsPepperidge Farm has created a new, natural, preservative free line of snacks dubbed Baked Naturals and my first impression of their wholesome attempt is one of approval. After eating dinner, my family and I decided to skip dessert and head straight for the newly discovered Toasted Wheat variety of the Pepperidge Farm Baked Naturals Wheat Crisps (there is also a Zesty Tomato Herb version). We always have to try a new product the day that it is purchased (it's basically a law in our household). After swallowing our first bite, my mother and I both said (at the same time), "This tastes like Wheat Thins ... only better!" That is probably the very best way to describe them, but for the sake of the review, I will try to be more descriptive.

These tasty crisps possess an imperfect square shape - sort of rustic looking. The picture on the box accurately depicts this fact. Each cracker is a crisp and crunchy textural delight, embellished by the "air bubbles" that make an appearance on about 99% of the crackers (a few are more on the flat side). Again, the picture on the box is a great representation, but mine were a bit darker brown. The taste is just as phenomenal as the texture and appearance. They have a slightly stronger "wheat" taste than Wheat Thins and do not seem as salty. In fact everything about this product, from the irregular shape and rustic texture just says "natural".

Annie's Totally Natural White Cheddar Bunnies

Annie's Totally Natural White Cheddar BunniesI'm sure you have heard of/ eaten Pepperidge Farm Goldfish Snack Crackers (if you haven't read our review) - they have reigned as King of animal shaped crackers for quite a while. But it looks like the Bunnies (specifically Annie's Totally Natural White Cheddar Bunnies) got jealous and decided to challenge them for the kingdom. Will they succeed?

Annie's Bunnies gave it a good try, but ultimately, they fell short.
The Good.
* The appearance was on point with and I was more than pleased by the off-white, lightly toasted bunnies awaiting my consumption.
* These bunnies are the perfect thickness, with a small hollow center which seems to be the ideal composition to achieve optimum crunchiness. Translation: crunchy!

The Bad.
* Where is the flavor? They may be crunchy, but they are totally bland with only a slight hint of white cheddar - actually more of an after-taste and not really even a strong one. Each cracker is dusted with a light coating of flavored powder, so perhaps more powder would have offered more flavor?! I don't know what they need to do, but they won't be taking over from the Goldfish any time soon.

While they weren't exactly disastrous in their lack of flavor, they certainly do not tempt me into debasing my healthy lifestyle (I have always considered crackers one of my major downfalls that leave me wanting to eat the entire box). So, for me, The Winner, and still King of the animal-shaped cracker universe is Pepperidge Farm Whole Grain Cheddar Goldfish Crackers.

Late July Organic Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers

Late July Organic Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers Pre-portioned snacks have become a popular convenience prominently displayed on supermarket shelves across the country. Yet, despite their enticing appearance, many of them are simply junk food in smaller portions. Late July Organic Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers holds their own in a very special way.

Each 37 gram pack has 4 sandwich crackers with a creamy peanut butter filling. They do not have the same greasy feel as the standard sandwich cracker, and if you are in the mood for a salty snack with a slight hint of sweetness (from the organic peanut butter), these are a fantastic choice. Did I mention that they were salty? I would have liked a little less of that salty flavor, but they are still delicious. The crackers are very flaky, reminding me of a Ritz, while offering a simple and natural taste. Unlike the "name brand" ones that barely have any actual peanut butter in them, these actually taste like peanut butter.
