Glenny's MultiGrain Cinnamon and Sugar Pastry Crisps
The other day, as I was wandering in the West Village, I was suddenly hit with a wave of lightheadedness and needed something to eat right then and there. Luckily, I was right near a neighborhood grocery store, and had a number of options that were pretty cheap, if I do say so myself ... cheap for New York, anyway. My normal reaction to this feeling is to bite into a nice juicy piece of fruit. But when that didn't help, I went right back in to try again. I saw my beloved Glenny's Soy Crisps on sale for $1.09. My usual favorites were absent, so I decided to be bold and grab Glenny's MultiGrain Cinnamon and Sugar Pastry Crisps, which I hadn't tried before.
They aren't 'soy' crisps, but pastry crisps that claimed to be "the sweetest 120 calories" and with over 18 grams of whole grains to boot. The bag is a single serving, but the serving is VERY generous. The picture only represents a little more than half of the contents of the bag, as I had eaten the rest before taking the picture. The crisps have an interesting look, texture, and taste. They are triangular, bumpy, wavy, and fairly large (maybe 1.5 inches per side), and they were, for the most part, intact. The texture is very thin, crispy, and even a bit airy, making for a very clean, light feel. The taste is clean and light as well, so they definitely have an air of "healthiness" about them. They aren't greasy or covered in artificial tasting glaze to enhance the flavor, which is a good thing. However, the mildness in flavor goes maybe a little too far - so much so that I really thought one of the main ingredients must be air. I could barely taste the crisps, almost having to make an effort to taste the cinnamon, which made it hard to actually enjoy my snack.

Because I enjoy continuous eating, snacks consisting of multiple small, low calorie pieces are more preferable to heavy snacks so that I can eat a lot at a time. When I first saw this bag of Robert's American Gourmet Pirate's Booty, I was confused by what the contents were but curious about the lower caloric content compared to typical potato chips.
The bag says that the Robert's American Gourmet Pirate's Booty "puffed rice and corn" is flavored "with aged white cheddar," a flavoring that is reminiscent of popcorn. Upon opening the bag, I indeed found little pieces of puffed rice and corn shaped like popcorn but slightly larger. The white cheddar flavor fit well, and each bite had a nice soft crunch. The folks at Taquitos Snacks say that they could easily devour an entire bag in one sitting, and while I liked it too - I wouldn't go that far.

I love crispy and crunchy snacks like chips, popcorn, nuts, crackers - these are the kind of things that I eat in moderate portions for my between-meal munching. Ever a fan of cheese-flavored crunchies, I decided to pick up a bag of Genisoy Crispy Dippers White Cheddar after I made some onion dip - after all, they looked to be the perfect scoop.
I was surprised at how large each crisp was - at least 1.5 inches long. Every crisp is curved to a varying degree, making some scoopers and others dippers. The texture is light, airy, and crunchy, similar to a rice cake or puffed Cheetos. The flavor is a surprisingly sharp white cheddar flavor, far more like a real cheese than the aforementioned orange Cheetos. I was also pleasantly surprised to see that only a couple were broken. My only complaint about these is that after I ate them, I experienced a "beany soy" aftertaste, which wasn't terrible, but certainly off-putting.

Chips and salsa is a guilty pleasure of mine. I tell myself that all of that spicy salsa is full of vitamins, lycopene, and all other sorts of goodness, but I can't fool myself into pretending that my deep-fried chips are a healthy treat. Luckily, my local store recently had a sale on Guiltless Gourmet Chips, which are all natural baked chips, so I felt more comfortable feeding my chips and salsa addiction with these. I decided that the plain unsalted corn chips would be the best compliment to my salsa, so I opted to try them first.
The chips, being baked, are harder and denser than a fried chip but still pleasantly crisp. The problem is, they are also thinner than normal. While this keeps the chips from becoming brick-like during baking, it means they're so fragile that half of the bag was full of broken chips. Speaking of half of the bag, despite how tall these bags look, they're less than half-full when you open them. Talk about deceptive! The taste was great - the corn flavor is strong, and even has a mild sweetness. I think that I'd buy the salted variety next time, however, as the unsalted felt like they were missing something.

There are many alternatives to thin, oily greasy potato chips, and we have a few favorites here at Iateapie.net, like Roberts American Gourmet Tings, OCocos Chocolate Crisps and Solea Sea Salt Polenta Corn Chips. But still, we keep looking for that perfect chip that has little or no calories (impossible I know). I spotted Jensen's Orchard All Natural Chips in the store - you can't miss the bright green colors, pictures of tomatoes and green chips on the packaging - and since this implied (in my mind) that these chips were health-ier, I decided to give it a try.
You would think that chips made with real tomatoes, spinach and potatoes, might not taste great, but put those doubts aside because these are awesome. They are thicker than regular chips, crunchy and delicious - a great alternative to regular chips. They are not very salty, but it takes about a nano-second to get used to that. The bag says that these are dipping chips, but I munched on these sans any other accompaniments, and it was tasty all on it's own.

Solea Polenta Corn Chips are made by Good Health Natural Foods, Inc. They are all natural, made with premium non-GMO corn from Europe and have no saturated or trans fat. There are several varieties including Mediterranean Lime, Tuscan Barbecue, Guacamole and Sea Salt, which is my favorite. The texture of the polenta chips is unique with a great thick crunch, and the scoop-like shape makes them a great partner for dips or yummy hummus like Sabra Supremely Spicy Hummus (read the review). They are also great by themselves though, because they're so much fun to pop in your mouth.
Roberts American Gourmet Tings
Robert's American Gourmet Tings are similar to crunchy Cheetos - but better. The benefits of Tings over that other snack, is that the cheesy flavor is more mellow and authentic and the crunchy sticks don't turn your fingers orange. There is also a big difference in the ingredients between the two. Tings is made from cornmeal with rice, sunflower/ corn oil, nutritional yeast and salt, while Cheetos has ... too many ingredients to list.

Baked Tostitos Scoops
Chips and salsa: the ultimate party food. Unfortunately, if you’re eating restaurant-style tortilla chips, you can rack up hundreds of 11% of the recommended daily amount of fat from 1 serving (1 ounce). Fortunately, the next time you’re in charge of providing party snacks, you now have a better alternative, Baked Tostitos Scoops.
I have a hard time telling the difference in taste between these chips and the regular version. Perhaps they’re less greasy than the original, but I consider that a definite plus. Also, these are a better alternative to the Tostitos Light, which are lower in calories but contain the fat replacer, Olestra (products with Olestra are now required by the FDA to carry this warning label: Olestra may cause abdominal cramping and loose stools. Olestra inhibits the absorption of some vitamins and other nutrients. Vitamins A, D, E, and K have been added). Baked Tostitos' taste is far superior as well and I especially enjoy the shape of the Scoops, which are actually perfect for scooping up gobs of salsa (and maybe a few spoonfuls of guacamole).

Are there really crunchy chips and puffed snacks that are healthy? Does slapping the label 'baked' on it automatically make something better for you? Well, there is no easy answer to that, but I have started reaching for 'baked' snacks as a "less bad for you alternative." One product that somehow keeps re-appearing in the shopping cart is Baked Cheetos. These taste really good, although probably not as good as the original Cheetos, but they are a pretty good replica and even get your fingers coated with that orange-yellow powder. Unless you're eating the original version regularly, there is a good likelihood that you won't even notice that this is a reduced calorie snack.
Quaker Apple Cinnamon Rice Snacks
At first bite, Quaker Rice Snacks has a trace of Quaker Oatmeal taste. I eventually got past that - it didn't take more than 2 bites - and found myslef really enjoying the unique taste of the Apple Cinnamon flavor. It's not easy to ban potato chips from the diet, especially not for a snack-a-holic like myself, but I could see myself buying this again. It's especially good if you want something that's sweet. There was a strong, pleasant hint of cinnamon.
Baked Lays Potato Chips
This is a great tasting snack. The 'baked' chips do have a slightly different texture than regular' potato chips, with the baked ones being a bit 'thicker' - which really means that you don't get a bag half full of broken chip pieces. The baked chips are also less oily. In my opinion, these differences make for a better product. I tried the original and barbecue flavors. I prefer the original, but the barbecue isn't bad either.
