Nature's Pride Double Fiber 100% Whole Wheat Bread

Nature's Pride 100% Whole Wheat Double Fiber Bread

I was looking for a whole grain bread with lots of fiber and NO HFCS, which is why Nature's Pride Double Fiber 100% Whole Wheat Bread caught my eye. Since additional fiber is one of the main reasons to eat whole grain bread in the first place, I figured double would be better.

I made myself a sandwich with two of the large, hearty slices. Upon biting into it, I could tell that this bread must really be full of fiber - because it's sort of like soft sawdust! There's a wheat flavor, but it's mild and dull. I guess I was expecting a really robust wheatiness, maybe even with chunks of wheat berries or bran, but this really emulates those generic whole-wheat sandwich loaves that most store brands carry. I did like that when I packed a sandwich for lunch, despite a four-hour stint in the work fridge, the bread still held its shape and hadn't gotten soggy. However, that didn't make up for the taste that I disliked.

Wegmans Lite Wheat Bread

Wegmans Light Wheat BreadLately, I have become quite attached to using Arnold Light Wheat Bread to make my sandwiches, however, sometimes the price tag can be a bit steep, so I decided to try out a store brand, good old Wegman's Brand "Food You Feel Good About Bread" Lite Wheat Bread, as a cheaper alternative.

Usually, I am a big fan of name-brand bread, but this product really showed me that store brands can be just as good! Although the bread lacked the nice nuttiness that I associate with the Arnold brand, it was pleasantly soft, and still held the distinct flavor of wheat bread. It was not as dense as the Arnold bread, but the softness resonated that nice fresh bread feeling, which lasted for days after I purchased the loaf. It held up well to both cold cuts and peanut butter, and would be dangerously good munched on it's own, sans topping!

Wonder Whole Grain Honey Wheat Bread

Wonder Whole Grain Honey Wheat BreadWonder Bread is perhaps the quintessential white bread, but, in an effort to stay current and stay afloat after emerging from bankruptcy protection, the company has branched out to produce new variations of Wonder Wheat Breads. This includes Wonder 100% Whole Wheat, Light Wheat, Whole Grain, Soft 100% Whole Wheat and Wonder Whole Grain Honey Wheat Bread which is what I tried. I'm a big fan of hearty bread, so I was curious to see how this new bread would be.

The bread had a softness that was very similar to the Wonder White Bread, which is perhaps more favorable to people who prefer white bread. However, I was hoping that the "whole grain" distinction would provide a nuttier texture to the bread. While this described as "honey wheat," I didn't think the bread tasted particularly sweet. The crust especially lacked sweetness.

Weight Watchers Whole Wheat Bread

Weight Watchers Whole Wheat BreadArnold Bakery Light Wheat Bread has been rocking my world lately, but I'm still always on the lookout for low-calorie, delicious bread - they say variety is the spice of life. When I saw Weight Watchers 100% Whole Wheat Bread, I decided that it was worth trying - mostly because it had the Weight Watchers name associated with it, and I was eager to compare it to my beloved low-calorie, high-fiber bread staples. And the 11-serving loaf was $3.99, only $0.10 more than the Arnold brand.

Oh, this Weight Watchers bread was deliciously yum WooHoo. Each sizable slice was pleasantly wheat-y and soft, and the bread was perfect for PB&J and grilled cheese alike. I liked this brand even more than the Arnold bread, as the slices seemed bigger and softer. I bought the loaf on Monday and used it throughout the week for fresh, tasty sandwiches and French toast (breakfast, lunch, and dinner!), even using the ends for a sandwich so as not to waste anything. Yes, it was that good.

Arnold Select Multigrain Sandwich Thins

Arnold Select Sandwich ThinsOh my! Arnold Select Multigrain Sandwich Thins are absolutely delicious and I'm sure you'll be all over them once you give them a try. They look similar to flat-breads, although these are a lot thinner. The texture of the bread is soft and it toasts great, giving you something warm and flavorful. When toasted, they are slightly crispy and go great with cream cheese - or our favorite Laughing Cow Light Spreadable Original Swiss Cheese Flavor Wedges, but they are also great for making your own pizzas, amazing for grilling and you can put anything in them to make your own sandwich creations or a healthy burger like the folks over at RonisWeigh.com.

Pepperidge Farms Natural Honey Flax Bread

Pepperidge Farms Natural Honey Flax BreadPepperidge Farms says their 100% Natural Breads are "a good source of fiber, with no artificial color, flavors, or preservatives, certified by the American Heart Association and baked with lower sodium natural sea salt, which contains less sodium than regular salt."

The Pepperidge Farms Natural Honey Flax Bread is one of my favorite breads out there. The taste is really good although I must admit that the texture is kind of "rough" if you compare it to all of the other 'fluffy' breads. The flax seeds are clearly discernible, and the honey is mild yet very savory. This bread has so much flavor that I find myself eating it by itself and it's great.

Arnold Bakery Light Wheat Bread

Arnold Bakery Light Wheat BreadWithout any doubt, you can call me a Carboholic. I love it all: pasta, bread, rice, oatmeal ... yum!! But although I have never been a part of the Atkins bandwagon, I am sensible enough to know that enough is enough in terms of these goodies. Therefore, I am always on the lookout for a nice lower calorie, high nutrient sandwich bread. Arnold's Bakery Light Wheat Bread fits that bill to a T. With 80 calories per two slice serving, there's no need to worry about making your sandwich "open faced".

For a "light" bread, the taste did not disappoint. It is dense, nutty, and slightly sweet, paired perfectly with either a nut butter and jam, or lunch meat. My standard turkey sandwich had new flavor, and the added fiber did its job, satisfying me for hours.

Sara Lee Whole Grain Kaiser Rolls

This review was done by Lizabeth Burnett. Liz has a passion for cooking healthy foods which started out of a desire to lose weight. "Not wanting to turn to a cabbage soup and bean sprout diet, I started shopping and cooking more mindfully which helped me lose 50 pounds over the last three years. Aside from cooking, I'm currently studying to become a dental assistant and I work at the local library."

Monster BurgerIn an attempt to eat healthier I've been buying whole grain products instead of white ones. In most cases, I have been happy with my findings, but one must be leery. Many products claiming to be "whole wheat" contain plenty of white or simply "wheat" flours, which are completely different. The nutrients are still stripped out. Others contain hidden diet shockers. Sadly, Sara Lee Whole Grain Kaiser Rolls fall under both categories.

Really, the taste of these buns are wonderful, slightly chewy on the outside and soft on the inside, with a light sweetness that is magnified when toasted. I plopped a Morningstar Farms Veggie Tomato and Basil Pizza Burger on one with some light cheese on top and enjoyed a marvelous lunch.

But the nutritiousness of these rolls are in question. The fiber is woefully low, and the first ingredient is enriched wheat flour. This is one product with a healthy facade. In reality, its just your plain ole' bun.

Rudi's Organic Multigrain Oat Bread

Rudi's Organic Multigrain Oat BreadI could never be a "No/ Low Carb" diet because of my love for bread. I can eat an English muffin or bagel at breakfast, a sandwich for lunch, and still enjoy a couple of dinner rolls. Thus, I'm always looking to try a new kind of bread. Recently, I decided to pick up a loaf of Rudi's Organic Multigrain Oat bread which was new to me, multigrain being a favorite of mine for sandwiches.

Now, allow me to start with stating that this is not a 100% whole grain loaf. The first ingredient is organic unbleached wheat flour, i.e. "fancy white flour". However, organic whole wheat flour is the third ingredient, so you do still enjoy some whole-wheat goodness. The good news is, if you're not fond of an overly wheat flavor, this bread is perfect for you. This bread really tastes like ... bread. There's nothing overly sweet, the grain flavors are detectable, but not overwhelming, and the texture is pleasantly hearty. It's not tough, but chewy (along the lines of a sourdough). This bread is also great for sandwiches because it does not become smashed under the weight of your sandwich fillings.

Pepperidge Farm Whole Wheat Hamburger Buns

burgerHamburgers would not be complete without the bun. I simply cannot bring myself to eat a Boca Burger or those yummy Boca Meatless Spicy Chik'n Patties, on regular bread - it's just not the same. However, if you're watching your calories, it can be hard to find whole grain hamburger varieties that won't blow your calorie budget. So I was thrilled to see the new Pepperidge Farm Classic 100% Whole Wheat Hamburger Buns in the grocery store - into my shopping cart it went!.

It might not be as low in calories as some of the "Lite" hamburger buns on the market, but unlike those buns, these are actually big enough to encase a substantial hamburger patty, chicken breast, or portabella mushroom cap. Another thing that differentiates this bun from others is its softness. While white hamburger buns typically have that "pillowy" texture, whole grain ones can be dense and heavy, sometimes making it hard to bite into. These buns, however, are pleasantly soft, making stuffing your face a breeze.

Alexia Artisan Breads Whole Grain Wheat Rolls with Flaxseeds

Alexia Wheat RollsAlexia Whole Grain Wheat Rolls is au natural, made with whole wheat flour and other grains including flaxseed. These rolls go straight from freezer to the oven for only 8-10 minutes, and then to your plate, and they come out looking exactly like it does on the package - very appealing. Split it down the middle and add a little margarine [my favorite is Fleischmann's Olive Oil Spread], and bite in to a surprisingly good tasting roll. I say surprisingly, because sometimes I find whole wheat breads to be coarser in texture than regular breads, but not so with this product. It's actually quite delicious, soft inside, with a harder crust outside. I thoroughly enjoyed eating it until I bit into some kind of tiny plant like particle. Was that flaxseed? soy grits? I don't know, but when I'm eating a roll, I don't want to taste anything but bread unless I put it in there. There's not a lot of these 'tiny surprises' in the bread, but I didn't enjoy this extra addition. However, once I knew that it was there, the second time I baked up a batch of rolls and ate one ... I still didn't like the extra tiny bits, but at least I expected them.
