Jack Link's Original Beef Jerky
I try to watch my salt intake, especially after learning all about the adverse effects of a high-sodium diet in my medical school classes. "Try" is definitely the operative word in that sentence, though, especially at those times when I crave something like beef jerky. Beef jerky, a health food, you ask? In many ways, it is! It's a great source of lean protein, with little sugar and a little bit of iron in there as well. The only problem is, well, the sodium.
Despite this fact, I decided to buy a 100-calorie package of Jack Link's Original Beef Jerky. It was $2.99 for one pack, but I couldn't help myself. Jack Link's jerky is described as being "slow cooked and mesquite smoked," and it tastes fantastic. It's chewy and a bit sweet, but salty and meaty. Some of the many reasons I love beef jerky: it's satisfying, it's chewy, and it's sweet and savory at the same time.

I really do love Michelina's Lean Gourmet. I love that the meals are very affordable, and mostly healthy. I just reviewed the Roasted Sirloin Supreme and talked about how much I loved the Five Cheese Lasagna, but now, unfortunately, I've hit upon one of Michelina's meals that I really didn't care for, the Beef Pepper Steak and Rice. As usual, I went to Michelina's website for some explanations.
You say, "try one bite of this entree, and you won't believe that it's low fat." True enough. "You'll find hearty beef strips, juicy green bell peppers and mild onions in a light sauce, all nestled on a bed of soft white rice." What's this light sauce you refer to? Why didn't you warn us that it is basically a tomato based sauce. I have made no secret of my dislike for tomato paste, and I don't think it goes well with pepper steak anyway, but my taste buds were totally unprepared for this taste. Maybe if I has been forewarned by some reference to the type of sauce on your packaging, I would not have disliked it as much.

Beef jerky is essentially chewable strips of dried meat. Drying meat is as old as time itself, since this is an excellent way to preserve meat for long periods of time. I'll be honest and say this is not really part of my regular diet, especially since I wasn't exposed to it growing up in my Jamaican culture, and also because this snack can run you $3.50 for a bag. Still, I must admit, it tastes pretty darn good. I had the 97% fat free Natural Style Teriyaki flavor beef jerky from Oh Boy Oberto. I was surprised that the strips are more sweet than salty, but I guess that's what teriyaki flavor is supposed to taste like (I'm a bit skeptical about that though).
The strips were also very flavorful - and a look at the ingredients shows why. They added natural smoke and the jerky even smells like you are eating smoked meat. After you eat some of the jerky strips, there is a spicy aftertaste lingering in your mouth (not too spicy and very pleasant I might add), and when I looked on the ingredients, I saw ginger and figured that must be the reason, since adding just the right amount of ginger can do that - make a food not taste spicy at first, but as you eat a little more, you detect it - different from chili peppers which are more up front - in your face kind of spicy.
