At Target the other day, I was searching for my beloved Thomas Light Whole Grain English Muffins and they were all out. As I looked around, the $3.00 sale price on Oroweat Whole Grain & Flax English Muffins caught my eye and I decided that it was worth a try.

I love how this English Muffin is dense, yet soft; it is also a bit on the thin side but it was still hearty enough to hold its own if you desire to pile it high with toppings. After a round in the toaster, the outer layer is crunchy, while the remainder is nice and chewy. There is also a subtle sweetness from the addition of honey & brown sugar.

Olde Hearth Honey Wheat Bagels

BagelsBagels are a carb-loving dieter's worst enemy! However, I think it's about time that you had your bagel and ate it too. I have never been able to find Western Bagel: The Alternative Bagel or Kim's Light Bagels, which both received rave reviews. But why should that stop me from enjoying a much desired bagel? Especially, once I discovered the intriguing Olde Hearth Honey Wheat Bagels for only $1.50 at Target.

First off, they are delightfully doughy with a perfectly golden crust, just like a bagel should be. There are so many ways to utilize these hearty bagels because they have a flavor that is similar to the Honey-Wheat Crust at California Pizza Kitchen, which can compliment a number of toppings. You can toast them or eat them straight up; but my favorite creation so far is to slice one in half and top each side with a Laughing Cow Light Swiss Cheese Wedge, some thinly sliced onions, lentils and chili powder, which is then heated at 375 degrees in an oven for 10 minutes.

Olde Hearth Select Health Crunch Bagels

Olde Hearth Select Health Crunch BagelsI love bagels, but most of the time, they are too big, which means a whole bunch of calories. I found these Olde Hearth Select Health Crunch Bagels in the refrigerated section of my local supermarket and was drawn to their substantial but appropriate size and overall healthy edge. I know that proper bagels are crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside, but I still like the typical supermarket bagels that are just chewy all around.

The website says, "More than just a wheat bagel, this hearty bagel offers whole grains and kernels. Packed full of great taste, you'll have a hard time resisting this anytime-of-the-day treat that's high in fiber." This bagel turned out nice, soft, and chewy after warming it up. Really delicious.

Thomas' Light Whole Grain English Muffins

Thomas Light Whole Grain English MuffinsCarbohydrates have and always will be a part of my life. That said, I am always looking for a viable option to create a healthier sandwich, or pizza, or any type of creative meal that features a form of bread! Although I usually stick to the standard issue whole wheat bread, sometimes it is fun to branch out with other options. Whether it be a breakfast Mc-muffin, lunch sandwich, or dinner "pizza", Thomas Light Whole Grain English Muffins fit the bill perfectly!

They are soft, nutty, and chewy at the same time, making the perfect heat and eat treat with some jam, or a more hearty fare. I have experimented with these muffins for breakfast, toasting them with a bit of cooked egg whites and cheese, for lunch smeared with hummus and veggies, and for dinner, which is my personal favorite - topping each muffin half with a bit of sauce, some low fat mozzarella cheese, and veggie topping, and you have the ultimate comfort food, pizza, with a nutritional punch and many less calories!

Kim's Light Bagels

Kims Light BagelsI'm always on the lookout for a tasty, low-calorie bagel, so I was really excited to find Kim's Light Bagels. They are offered in a delicious variety of flavors including plain, wheat, cinnamon, blueberry and onion. I tried the plain, wheat, and cinnamon bagels. Each was great, but I think the cinnamon ones were my favorite. If you think "Light" means that something is missing - then you would be wrong when it comes to these bagels.

The bagels aren't huge. Like Western Bagel: The Alternative Bagel, each is 54 grams - about half the size of regular bagels. But they're a filling snack on their own and an excellent sandwich base for a meal. They were developed by Kim Bensen, a woman who lost a remarkable 212 pounds through a lot of hard work, not surgery. Given her background, it's not a surprise that the bagels were developed with healthy eating in mind.

Western Bagel: The Alternative Bagel

The Alternative BagelHow can you not love bagels? Chewy, toasted, loaded with cream cheese - a diet disaster for sure, but splendid in its guilty pleasure. The Alternative Bagel by Western Bagel, however, advertises all of the good without the guilt.

Allow me to say, this bagel is about 30% smaller than a regular bagel. This, of course, accounts for a calorie reduction in the simplest way - smaller portions. Still, the bagels are decently sized, so I'm not complaining - merely pointing it out. I tried the Cinnamon Spice variety and the flavor of this is superb, exactly like a bakery's cinnamon-raisin bagels, sans raisins. It's mildly sweet, with a pleasant cinnamon kick that's not overwhelming and a slightly chewy texture.

Diet Trash: Thomas Cinnamon Raisin Swirl Bagel

bagelsEach bagel is pretty big at 104 grams, which means good value for your money - if only these had some better nutrition. Unfortunately, each bagel has 290 calories, 470 mg sodium (20% of the daily value) and no vitamins. We are not suggesting that 290 calories is particularly high, but it is when this is just breakfast. Add 100 calories from 2 tablespoons of cream cheese and another 120 calories from a glass of orange juice, and you've just had 500 calories from breakfast!

Diet Trash A bowl of one of one of my favorite cereals, Honey Bunches of Oats, has 120 calories. Add another 86 calories from skim milk, and a piece of fruit, lets say a banana which has 110 calories, and that's still only 316 calories, and you're getting lots more vitamins and minerals.
