Dr Pepper Diet Soda

Dr Pepper DietI've grown to tolerate that distinct diet soda taste in exchange for 0 calories - I won't tell you diet Coca Cola tastes the same as regular Coke, but drink enough and you'll get used to the differences. There was a recent promotion from Diet Dr Pepper giving away free coupons for their soda, claiming that their soda didn't taste like diet. I was up for the challenge, so I decided to try Diet Dr Pepper when I got a coupon for a free one in the mail.

Diet Dr Pepper looks like the typical cola, but it has such a ... unique taste. To me it's like cough medicine - and indeed, their diet version does taste like the regular version - but that's not necessarily a good thing. I just don't like you Dr. Pepper - so I guess I'm biased in this review. Are there any Dr. Pepper fans out there? The taste is just too weird for me. Still, the ads were right - Diet Dr. Pepper does taste like the regular one to me.

Shasta Diet Orange Soda

Shasta Diet Orange SodaI have an affinity for fruity flavored sodas. Give me a 7-Up or a Sunkist over a Cola any day. However, I've found many diet sodas to be disappointingly bland or medicinal. I've had diet lemon-lime sodas that are lacking in both lemon and lime; diet grapefruit sodas sometimes taste just like Alka-Seltzer; and diet cherry sodas that taste like carbonated cough syrup. In the Orange department, I've been very happy with diet Sunkist. Wanting to find a tasty diet soda that avoided aspartame, however, I settled on trying Shasta Diet Orange Soda.

While diet Shasta Orange has a deep orange color, the flavor is decidedly off. It's not that clean orange flavor that diet Sunkist touts; it's more of someone's assumed flavor of orange - someone who's only ever tried orange in the form of Thera-Flu flavored medicine. It's sweet, and it has a slight orange tinged flavor, but it has a chalky aftertaste that I found repulsive.

Sierra Mist Free Cranberry Splash

Sierra Mist Free CranberrySplashOn occasion, when I drink soda, I stick to diet sodas. While Diet Coke is pretty easy to find, I'm not too keen on the caffeine - I like my sodas caffeine free also. When I saw Sierra Mist Free Cranberry Splash, which has no caffeine, I knew I had to try it.

The soda has a reddish pink color for the cranberry representation. The cranberry flavor was represented with a tart yet sweet bite, and I really couldn't detect any "diet aftertaste" in this soda. It sort of reminds me of the delicious diet cherry limeades from Sonic Drive-Ins. I loved the taste and had no complaints with the taste.

7Up: Diet Cherry 7Up Antioxidant

dietcherry7upAhh 7Up, I like you - I really do. Well, actually I like the regular version a lot - and on the occasions that I do reach for a soda, I have been known to choose you because your crisp taste and non-caffeinated ways have always been a delight to me. But, I read with mixed emotions when it came to seeing the new Diet Cherry 7Up Antioxidant. Of course I was intrigued to try you - being new and pink ... I knew I wouldn't be able to resist, but frankly, I was a little turned off by the marketing use of the term "Antioxidant" in the name of a soda. Drinking soda to enhance your health?! There is 10% of the daily recommendations of vitamin E in this soda, but this is definitely not the place I would look to in order to fulfill my daily vitamin requirements.

So let's talk about the taste. The cherry flavor was definitely front and center, and as usually, my nose was tickled by those little carbonated bubbles. I was pleased, but not in love. The "sweetness" was a little off. It wasn't a full bodied sweetness, like with regular sodas, instead I kind of felt it on the back of my tongue (so hard for me to describe). It's like it was sweet, but not in the way that sweet things usually taste. You were ... aaight dear Diet Cherry 7Up Antioxidant, but not really a stand out.

Hansen's Tangerine Diet Green Tea Soda

Hansen's Tangerine Diet Green Tea SodaAfter reading the review of Hansen's Natural Green Tea Pomegranate Soda about an all natural green tea soda, I knew I had to try one for myself. I found Hansen's Diet Green Tea Soda at Target for around $4.00 for a 4 pack and I decided on the Tangerine flavor.

Having slightly high hopes for this drink, I was left VERY disappointed. Not only did this 'diet' version taste bad, it also had a terrible aftertaste. The taste was so off putting that I didn't even finish half of the 16 ounce can. The tangerine flavor was wrong, there was no sweetness and the soda was more bitter than tart.

A&W Diet Cream Soda

AW Diet Cream SodaYes, we all know soda is terrible for you. I know it may be rotting my teeth, dissolving my intestines, and/or giving me cancer. Did you hear a nail dropped in a bottle of Coke will start to disintegrate? Yeah, I've only heard it 35 billion times. But sometimes ... I really want one. I want to feel the fizz tickling my nose, and the raspy-ness as it goes down my throat. I generally prefer drinking diet sodas because I don't like to drink my calories and I'm always on the lookout for a diet soda that doesn't taste so ... well, diet. I want the fizz and not the chemical-induced aftertaste.

Cream soda always makes me feel all nostalgic. It's old fashioned and reminds me of the good old days (I may only be in college, but don't think I can't imagine what those days were like). But it's really hard to find a diet variety of cream soda. A rarity, some might say. Enter A&W Diet Cream Soda. It's really, really good - sweet, bubbly and delicious. It has no after-taste and I honestly do not think it tastes "diet-y" at all.

8 Low Calorie Beverages That Can Replace Soda

8 Soda AlternativesGiving up regular sodas is one of the most often mentioned pieces of advice when it comes to cutting down on calories, and improving general health. Rather than simply repeat this, we thought we would provide you with some alternatives. Below are 8 beverages that that can help you kick that soda habit.

1. Diet Soda. If artificial sweeteners don't scare you away, then this will at the very least, help you transition away from the regular sodas. Caffeine free diet Coke was instrumental in helping to wean me off traditional sodas, and eventually, I even gave up the 3-a-day diet soda habit.

Aquafina Sparkling2. Aquafina Sparkling Carbonated Water Beverage. There are no calories and it's fizzy like soda. We tried the Citrus Twist variety and loved it.

3. Arizona TeaArizona Diet Green Tea with Ginseng. Now this was what helped me give up diet and regular sodas totally. The taste is phenomenal - read the review.

4. Carnation Instant Breakfast No Sugar Added Nutritional Drink. This has the same amount of calories as regular soda (150 calories in an 11 ounce bottle), but this is a nutritious drink with 13 grams of protein, 2 grams of fiber and 25-50% of many vitamins and minerals. We love this stuff!

5. Diet Lipton Green Tea with Citrus. A little sweeter than flavored water, but not as sweet as fruit flavored beverages. There are no calories and we love this flavor.

The Switch Black Cherry All Natural Soda

The Switch Black CherryAre all natural sodas increasing in popularity? Do you drink them? When I discovered Izze, I thought I had died and gone to carbonation heaven. Sodas shouldn't be on your list of approved diet foods, but if you ever get a craving and seltzer just won't do it for you, then The Switch Black Cherry is a fabulous alternative.

The bubbly carbonation gently "bites" your tongue while a naturally sweet cherry flavor permeates throughout your mouth. The Switch (love the name) is made up of 100% juice mixed with filtered sparkling water, natural flavors and ascorbic acid. If you go to The Switch website, you'll see it says, 100% of what you want: 100% juice, 100% RDA Vitamin C, All natural, Carbonated, and great taste & refreshment (and they're right on). 0% of what you don't: no Corn Syrup, no added sugar, no preservatives, no artificial colors and gluten free.

Zevia Natural Twist Soda

I found Zevia at Mrs. Greens All Natural Grocer, and after hearing so much about it, I had to pick it up. Zevia is supposed to be the "Natural Alternative to Diet Soda." It's made with the natural, high intensity sweetener Stevia, which is currently considered to be an "additive" since the FDA hasn't approved it for use in foods & beverages (there is an excellent article on Stevia over at TreeHugger).

Nevertheless, Zevia, which is marketed as a "carbonated Stevia supplement" (because Stevia cannot be used as a food ingredient), managed to make it to the supermarket shelves. I picked up a can of the Natural Twist flavor. It has a lemon/ lime taste and a strong carbonated taste. I didn't detect much after-taste like the folks at Bevnet did, but there was a slight left over acidic taste on the back of my tongue - this might be due to the carbonation though. As sodas go, this would not be a favorite of mine.

Diet Pepsi Jazz Caramel Cream Soda

Diet Pepsi Caramel CreamI have many fond childhood memories of making caramel corn at Christmas, munching on caramel apples at the fair, and plotting attacks on the bowl of caramel oatmeal cookie dough my mom would whip up for the neighbors. When I spotted Diet Pepsi Caramel Cream on sale, the inner caramel-holic emerged and I snatched it up.

I rushed home, threw the rest of the groceries haphazardly into the fridge, popped the tab on my new found caramel soda, inserted my customary pink straw, and took a sip. Then I took another. Before I knew it I was staring contemplatively at an empty 12 oz. can, trying to put my finger on its unique flavor. It's definitely sweeter than a normal diet Pepsi but it didn't bring up any caramel nostalgia until after quite a few sips. Even then it was more like a slight aftertaste rather than a full on creamy flavor.

Diet Pepsi Max

Diet Pepsi Max is Pepsi's new ginseng infused diet cola. Adding ginseng gives the soda a caffeine boost to 46 milligrams per 8 ounce serving compared to 24 mg in regular Diet Pepsi. The taste of the Maxxed out Pepsi is very similar to diet Pepsi - no weird aftertaste. If you're still drinking sodas, then you'll like this, and if you claim you don't like diet sodas - then I would say give this a try and see if you don't become a convert.

A 12 ounce bottle has 69 milligrams of caffeine, which is more than Diet Mountain Dew and Mellow Yello with 55 and 51 mg per 12 ounce. Diet Vanilla Coke and Coke with Lime both have 45 mg in 12 ounces; and a Tall Starbucks Coffee has 260 mg. Check out the caffiene database at Energy Fiend.

Coke: Diet Coke Plus

Diet Coke PlusDiet Coke Plus is essentially diet Coke PLUS vitamins and minerals. There have been a few haters on this, "how dare they put vitamins in a drink which is probably unhealthy in the first place?!" is what people say. And well, I slightly agree. There is only 25% of vitamin B6, B12 and niacin, and 15% zinc and magnesium, so for those who like this, let's not pretend that we are getting a lot of vitamins from this beverage! Pop a multivitamin instead - which you should be doing anyway (try OneSource).

In terms of taste, I swear that Coke has reformulated Diet Coke without telling us and that is a totally good thing. Diet Coke Plus tastes exactly like Diet Coke (the secretly reformulated version) and I like. Unfortunately for me, I bought the 12 pack, and since I had a seriousl bad soda habit in the past, I feel myself drinking more than 1 of this per day. After this is gone - no more soda for me for at least a month! I know there are a lot of soda bashers out there, and whereas I wouldn't advocate putting anything with pH 3 in your mouth (that's like drinking not-so-concentrated acid), I don't exactly believe that drinking soda is the root of all evil.

Airforce Slender NutriSoda

Airforce Slender NutriSodaAnything with the name Nutrisoda has to bought and reviewed ASAP, especially a "nutrient-enhanced sodas with zero sugar, caffeine, sodium or aspartame." There are quite a few varieties available including Calm, Focus, Flex, Immune, Radiant, Renew, Energize and Slender - which is the first one I tried.

The Slender variety is flavored with pink grapefruit and guava. From the website, Slender "facilitates healthy weight management" and is "is full of the right stuff to help you healthily manage your weight." Love the name of the sodas - HATED the taste yuck. It has a very acidic, metallic and medicinal taste. I love tart beverages, but this just goes way overboard (citric acid is the 2nd most abundant ingredient after water). It turns out that this 'soda' is nothing more than a glorified energy drink. It contains the usual supplements of carnitine, tyrosine, and something called garcinia cambogia - a plant containing hydroxycitric acid which has been found to suppress fatty acid synthesis, food intake, and promote induced weight loss.

Hansen's Natural Green Tea Pomegranate Soda

Hansens Natural Green Tea Pomegranate SodaI have been on the lookout for beverages that have the latest marketing hype ... antioxidants, especially pomegranate, acai and blueberry juices. Yes I love the 100% juices but I also like diversity, so I was curious to try Hansens Natural Green Tea Soda- Pomegranate . Hansen's Natural (and Diet) Sodas have no caffeine, no preservatives and no artificial flavors or colors in them. The label reads, "water, glucose-fructose syrup, natural flavors with extracts of pomegranate, citric acid and chinese green tea extract.

I put "citric acid" in bold in the ingredients list because this is one tart, acidic tasting soda - and I loved it! That's just the way I like my carbonated beverages - when you take that first swig and you have to say ... Aahhhh ... and rub your throat a little. Other than an acidic taste, there wasn't much other flavor - no pomegranate and no green tea flavor. I love the prominence of the word Pomegranate on the label, which may lead one to actually believe that this plays a major part in this beverage. Alas, I have learned my lesson from the Juice Juice 100% Juice - Grape fiasco, which is actually grape flavored apple juice [read about my shock here]. Similarly, don't be mislead by this label, this is pomegranate FLAVORED soda.

Although there is more citric acid than green tea in this soda, it does have 35 mg EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate), which is the compound found in green tea thought to be responsible for its beneficial effects. But is 35 mg enough? Not nearly. You would need at least 240 - 320 mg of polyphenols (and by extension EGCG) daily to see any beneficial effects - and that's the low end of the scale. But every little bit helps, and thank you Hansen for putting the actual amount on your label.

Enivga Nestea Sparkling Green Tea

Enivga Nestea Sparkling Green Tea There is a lot of buzz about Enviga - and it hasn't even come out to the market yet. It is slated for release in November 2006, but IateApie had got you covered with a revview. Enviga is a joint effort between Coca Cola and Nestle. The main selling point is that it is a calorie burning drink due to "a combination of green tea and caffeine in a drink that invigorates metabolism to increase calorie burning."

There are many skeptics and here are my thoughts:
So how does it taste? Enviga Sparkling Green Tea tastes more like an energy drink than a traditional soda. There are 3 flavors: peach, berry and green tea. I liked the green tea flavor the least - and the peach and berry flavors do little to mask the strong limey, energy drink /caffeine taste. I didn't like the taste at first, but when I was unknowingly reaching for the 2nd can that day, I realised two things: 1). I got used to the taste quite quickly and actually didn't mind it; and 2). I was influenced by the marketing hype about burning calories because by God, I will take any help I can get!

Do I believe it burns calories? According to Coca Cola, your body will burn 60-100 more calories from drinking 3 cans of Enviga daily (there is no effect if you drink more). I would like to see more studies to prove the effect. The one they cite involves only 35 people - come on scientists, you know you can't draw conclusions from such a small study. Check out this [link] for more details about the study. But I do believe it is possible and since a 12 ounce can of Enviga is only 5 calories, it's not like you are going to be ingesting a lot of calories anyway.

Will you lose weight by drinking this? Absolutely not. Hit the gym people! But, if you exchange 3 cans of regular soda for this, you are saving more than 200 calories per day.

Jones Sugar Free Root Beer Soda

Jones Soda Jones soda seems to have a cult following, probably due to the fact that they have some oddball flavors, like Tangerine, Blueberry, Green Apple, Blue Bubblegum, MF Grape, Crushed Melon and Fufu Berry ... just to name a few. So with all these interesting and unique flavors, why is it that all my local grocery store [Kroger] had in stock was diet Root Beer! And it was $4.00 for a 4 pack! Nevertheless, I thought it would be a good idea to try some other brands of soda - sometimes even I get tired of Coke and Pepsi.

After chilling the sodas in the refrigerator for a while, I twisted off the cap of one and took a big gulp. I was NOT pleased! There is a strong taste of "Winterfresh chewing gum." Have you ever had Winterfresh gum? It tastes like toothpaste - and that's just what this soda tasted like. Winterfresh Gum Actually, it's not the taste of the soda, but more of an aroma. When I pinch my nose so I can't smell anything, I don't get a toothpaste taste. Then, the soda tastes sweet, with a light fizz and not unpleasant - but I detected no hint of root beer anywhere.

Coke: Diet Black Cherry Vanilla Coke

Diet Black Cherry Vanilla CokeCoke withdrew Vanilla cherry from shelves in the US at the beginning of 2006, and in it's place came Black Cherry Vanilla Coke, regular and diet version. I really like this new flavor. A word of warning, it is sweeter than most other diet Coke (or Pepsi) sodas. I guess the sweetness is from the 'cherry and vanilla' flavor. I could taste the vanilla flavor, but it's mild - weaker than in the former vanilla coke, but I like the mildness. The cherry flavor is even milder, and not that noticeable in my opinion. You know how people say they don't like diet sodas because they taste different, well the Diet Black Cherry Vanilla Coke really tastes like regular, sugar-ladened sodas.

Diet Sprite Zero

spriteSprite has quietly started changing up their brand image lately with Sprite Remix, which it is marrying to hiphop and the NBA - it seems CocaCola is not sleeping on one of it's 'sleeper brands.' I love the original Sprite, then there was Sprite Remix, then Sprite Remix Berry Clear, and now what was Diet Sprite is now Diet Sprite Zero, which is rumored to be in for yet another name change to just Sprite Zero.

Call it whatever you want, but if you like Sprite, and even if you don't - but really who doesn't - then you'll like Diet Sprite Zero, because it tastes JUST LIKE THE REAL THING - unlike some other diet beverages (aka Coke and Diet Coke). What I like about Sprite, and Diet Sprite Zero is that it is not too harshly carbonated and not too acidic.

Coke: Caffeine Free Diet Coke

colaHere's my confession: I'm a soda-holic. I don't think I can go a day without having a few sodas. Not just one, but 2 - at least! Caffeine free diet coke is the answer to us soda-holics dreams. See, we don't want the calories and sugar in regular coke. But we go even further and get rid of the caffeine. To those of you out there who don't understand our need, you might say, "well why not just have water?" I have heard that so many times - It's an addiction people. I need to feel that raspy taste going smoothly down my throat, or those bubbles tickling my nose just ever so slightly. Caffeine-free diet coke actually tastes more like regular Coke than does Diet Coke and I find that it tastes better than Diet Coke.
