Pizza Fit 'n Free
Oh pizza straight out of the oven, with its crunchy crust, ooey gooey cheese, and spicy tomato sauce - is there anything better? Unfortunately, they can be calorie bombs, and some "diet" pizzas just aren't satisfying. But Pizza Fit 'n Free says they are "America's Fat Free Pizza." Well now - that's all they needed to say to get me to try it!
Each 7 inch (6.4 ounce) pizza clocks in at only 250 calories, no fat, 16% of the daily value for sodium (380 mg), 20 grams of protein and 41 grams of carbohydrates which includes 3 grams of fiber (12% of the DV) and no sugar. There is also 26% of daily recommendations for vitamin A and 45% for calcium. I was really excited. The only problem: these pizzas are only available online! Six pizzas cost $29.94 plus shipping ($6 if you order just the six pizzas; the price goes down if you order more), which is a bit on the pricey side. The company sent me a sample, though, and once I got it, I dug in right away.

I am not generally a big fan of the South Beach Living frozen entrees, which has actually been discontinued, but South Beach Diet Grilled Chicken and Vegetable Harvest Wheat Crust Pizza has been my one exception. Therefore, I figured that a few of their other frozen pizzas might be worth a shot, so I scooped the Buffalo Style Chicken Pizza. After 18 minutes in a 425 degree oven, I was fully prepared to dive in.
The "harvest wheat crust" is the perfect thickness; it is chewy, but thin enough that you still get some crunch. The sauce adorning the hearty base is not your average marinara. Instead, it is comparable to what you would find dripping off of a restaurant style buffalo wing. The special sauce gives the pizza a kick, but not to the point where it is unbearable (and I am not usually one for spiciness). The chicken has a great texture and, while there is not an over abundance, you get enough to satisfy your taste buds in each bite. My one complaint is the cheese (a very important factor when it comes to pizza). It does not melt in a gooey "pizza" way, like the front of the box displays, but just hardens a bit and melds together.

Pizza is one of my top 5 favorite foods. Because of this, I am determined to find nutritious varieties that will fit into my healthy dietary regime, without sacrificing on taste. When I first saw the description of Kashi Sicilian Veggie Pizza, I knew I had to find it. Kashi says, "Experience taste inspirations from the south of Italy with this new stone fired pizza. This pizza blends all-natural ingredients and appealing flavors with its caramelized onions, grilled eggplant, fire roasted red peppers and kale that lay on top of a balsamic infused white bean tomato sauce."
Kashi wasn't lying. The Kashi 7 Whole Grains & Sesame crust is tried and true - soft and doughy, with an irresistible crunch taking emphasis. The cheese is not missed here because there is so much flavor going on. The caramelized onions, eggplant and roasted red peppers add not only their own unique flavor, but also a delightful textural element; while the subtle, yet flavorful balsamic-infused white bean tomato sauce completely makes the dish. The curly kale contributes to the colorful appearance, but does not add too much to your palate taste-wise. Overall, I feel that Kashi really stepped it up and created a great addition to the frozen food market for vegans and non-vegans alike.

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say "Amy's Kitchen rocks my socks." I don't think I've ever disliked any of their products ... I even like the much maligned Amys Tofu Scramble. As much as I love Amy's though, the cost keeps me from buying this brand too often. We're talking anywhere from $4.99 to $6.00 EACH. The pizzas, however, I find to be a fairly good buy. Publix carries them for $5.19 and they're a decent size with three good sized slices each. My current favorite is the glorious Spinach Pizza.
This pizza features a wonderful chunky tomato sauce sitting atop a crispy on the outside, tender on the inside whole wheat crust, which is then topped with a blend of feta and mozzarella cheese, basil, a little onion and spinach. You can taste both the feta and the mozzarella, and though there is a lot of spinach in the topping it's not overpowering at all. Amy's pizzas aren't recommended for the microwave but take a mere 15 minutes or so to bake in the oven depending on how crispy you like your crust and how brown you like the top to be.
Truly, I have nothing negative to say about the taste of this product; the crust, the sauce and the toppings are all exceptional. Now admittedly, I am a big cooked-spinach-in-stuff kind of person, but I really think that even those of you that don't like spinach might like this pizza. Case in point: my six year old who would rather gouge her own eyes out than eat anything green, LOVES these. "Mommy, can I have some of that spinach pizza?" I feel like I'm hallucinating every time I hear her say those words - who are you and what have you done with my child?!

Kashi has a line of frozen pizzas where the crust is made with their signature blend of whole grains & sesame plus flax seed. In addition, the pizza is "stone-fired to bring out the natural flavors". Having already had success with the Five Cheese Tomato Pizza and the Mediterranean Pizza, I hope to hit the trifecta with Kashi's Roasted Garlic Chicken Pizza.
Alas, like Big Brown, who won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, but finished in last place at the Belmont Stakes, Kashi scored with the first 2 pizzas, but failed miserably with this Roasted Garlic Chicken pizza (a little horse racing reference for those like myself who couldn't resist the drama on the tele). As soon as you take a bite you will probably say the same thing I did, "Good Garlic - what is going on!" Well, you might not utter the same exact words, but the pungent taste of garlic will surely fill your mouth because the creamy garlic sauce is intense! I cannot describe anything else - not the taste of the roasted vegetables nor the crispiness of the crust - because the garlic was so overwhelming, it was all that caught and kept my attention. I would have to say this pizza was a flop, and so would our good friends over at HeatEatReview.

Kashi has a line of frozen pizzas where the crust is made with their signature blend of whole grains & sesame plus flax seed. In addition, the pizza is "stone-fired to bring out the natural flavors". Having already had success with the Five Cheese Tomato Pizza, I bought Kashi's Mediterranean Pizza and hoped for a similarly good experience.
After heating in the toaster oven for 10 minutes, it came out looking just as gorgeous as it did on the box. There was a colorful array of toppings including spinach, fire-roasted red onions & sweet red peppers, all of which contributed a different flavor to the dish. The crust is crispy on the bottom with a nice chewiness as well. The sauce is sweet and mild and the feta cheese, which I usually do not like, brings a unique element to this pizza, combining with the mozzarella, white cheddar, yellow cheddar and asiago cheeses to create a wonderfully cheesy pizza. This was just as delicious as Kashi's Five Cheese Tomato Pizza and I'm still trying to figure out which one I like better.

There has been a lot of buzz about the "Whole Grain" Lean Pockets - mostly from the Lean Pockets people themselves, but this made me want to take a 2nd look at this breakfast/ snack option. First I checked out the ingredients list of the Lean Pockets Whole Grain Supreme Pizza. The 2nd item is whole wheat flour, but there is also unbleached enriched flour, making it not much difference from most other pastries. The list also includes partially hydrogenated palm kernel oil although not enough for trans fat to make an appearance on the nutrition facts.
As for the taste of Lean Pockets Supreme Pizza, it's great. Cheese and pepperoni inside a crispy, thick crust - what more could a girl ask for? It's the perfect size for a snack - not too small, but not too big that the nutrition facts make me toss it like Texas Toast.

Kashi has a line of frozen pizzas where the pizza crust is made with their signature blend of Whole Grains & Sesame plus flax seed and the pizza is "stone-fired to bring out the natural flavors". I tried the Five Cheese Tomato which is made with a tomato basil sauce and ... what else but 5 cheeses, namely asiago, parmesan, mozarella, white and yellow cheddar. I put it in the toaster oven for 10 minutes and it came out looking exactly like the picture on the box.
The first bite was delicious and it kept delighting me the more I ate. It was cheesy (of course) and the sauce is not too heavy. I also really liked the thin crust. The folks at HeatEatRview hated it and called it bland, and I usually agree with them, but on this one I differ. I liked the fact that it was light and not greasy.

The picture on the box of Lean Cuisine Brick Oven Style BBQ Recipe Chicken Pizza looked like something I just could not wait to sink my teeth into, so I had to pick it up when I saw it was on sale for $2.50. When I took it out of the box and microwaved it, my thoughts did not change. The pizza is a very generous portion and it looked similar to the picture on the box.
The Good:
The Crust. While the inside does not get very crispy the outer edges do and it is a very nice balance!
The Chicken. Evenly spread over the top of the pizza and tastes like REAL chicken (a plus for frozen meals).
The Size. This is bigger (at least in the diameter) than a Pizza Hut personal pan pizza.
The Cheese. There is a nice serving of gooey, flavorful cheese!
What's Not so Good:
The first few bites were delicious, but then, I realized that there was a weird after-taste. This was quite distracting but was not revolting enough to cause me to stop eating.
The Sauce. while it is not flavorless, it is lacking a bit of pizzazz!
The long list of ingredients is not too impressive!
By the time I ate the last piece (I cut mine into 4 slices), the pizza was cold and the cheese and toppings congeal together, which was not quite as appetizing. So to enjoy it, eat it quickly!

On the surface, the Lean Cuisine Deep Dish Spinach and Mushroom Pizza is one sexy looking pizza. It is smothered in cheese and there is a fair amount of mushrooms and spinach on top (fair but not necessarily plentiful). The aroma when it was 'cooking' in the microwave filled the hall at work making everybody around salivate so I guarded it with my life as I walked back to my office and used my newly learned Tae Kwon Do skills to ward off several attacks from coworkers trying to beat me down and take it away (okay maybe I'm exaggerating a bit there). As I settled down and took that long anticipated first bite, things turned pretty ugly!
Where was the flavor? Why is this so bland? My mom always told me that looks could be deceiving (don't be fooled by the pretty boys is what she actually said), so damn you Lean Cuisine for fooling me and making me think this was going to be really good. The taste is non-existent, flat, no where to be found. I looked at the box for clues as to what could have gone wrong and that's when I realized that this pizza was made using Alfredo sauce instead of tomato paste. Even so, you would think that there would still be some sort of "Alfredo taste", but not only was that not making an appearance, but neither was there any flavor from the spinach or mushrooms.

Amy's Roasted Vegetable Pizza has already been previously reviewed [here], but I have always wanted to try it and never purchased it because of its large, multi-serving size which is slightly inconvenient when preparing a meal for one person. When Amy's introduced their new line of single-serving size pizzas early this year, I practically jumped for joy, especially when I saw the generous portion in the freezer case at my local Whole Foods. Without a moment of hesitation, I quickly placed it in my shopping cart before anyone else could get his or her hands on the goods!
When I took the pizza out of the box, it looked pretty similar to the picture on the box. It was LOADED with roasted red peppers, mushrooms, sweet onions and marinated artichoke hearts. While the pizza was cooking up in my toaster oven (takes about 7 minutes to cook), I decided that the pizza looked a little "naked" to me, despite all the veggies. So, I decided to quickly cook up some Lightlife tempeh fakin' bacon strips and broccoli florets. This way, I was not only able to add extra flavor and more color to the pizza's presentation, but extra protein and fiber too. Everything from the crisp (yet slightly chewy) crust to the sweet and savory vegetables and olive oil-based sauce was delicious. I also enjoyed the nice contrast and added color that the smoky tempeh bacon and fresh broccoli contributed to this sweet and savory tasting pizza. I found that the single-serving size was not only extremely convenient, but sufficient for lunch as well. I was completely satisfied after eating this pizza.
Healthy Choice Gourmet Supreme Pizza
Healthy Choice Gourmet Supreme Pizza is a winner in my book. This 'gourmet' pizza (I think they are using that term very loosely in this case) has a tomato sauce base, mozzarella cheese and is topped with fire roasted bell peppers and onions, sausage, and pepperoni. They didn't skimp on the toppings and the presentation / looks of the pizza is excellent - no toppings falling off or concentrated in the middle like with the Linda McCartney Mushroom and Spinach Pizza [read the review].
I enjoyed the pizza thoroughly - I was hungry, tired and it just hit the spot. I agree with the Lunch Ladies review [link] that it might not have a wow factor like Amy's Roasted Vegetable Pizza [reviewed here], but when you combine what looks to be a very well made product being offered at a reasonable price and not-too-bad nutrition - I think we have a winner here!

Lean Cuisine has a new line of pizzas out - Brick Oven Style! For $2.50, you get a large 'individual sized' pizza of "white meat chicken, roasted garlic, onions and reduced fat mozzarrella cheese in garlic sauce." They mention garlic more than once, which should tell you something about this pizza without you even trying it - it has a strong galic aroma when it is being prepared and that garlic smell lingers in the room and on your breath!
Things I like: The crust comes out to be thin and crispy and there is also a lot of cheese. I didn't even mind the strong garlic taste. There wasn't a lot of chicken chunks in the pizza, but I did get quite a few pieces so I won't complain about that too much.
Things I didn't like: I didn't like the sauce which didn't add much flavor to the pizza - other than garlic. I definitely did not like the chopped onion pieces all over the pizza. This is probably a personal preference, but while I don't mind onion, I don't like eating chunks of it.
Amys Roasted Vegetable Pizza
Amy's Roasted Vegetable Pizza has no cheese and is vegan. You know what else it is? ... two thumbs up
Let me tell you, I was very very skeptical about a pizza with no cheese, but I had absolutely no reason to be. I think I actually let out a squeal of delight when I had a bite of Amy's Roasted Vegetable Pizza. The crust of the pizza is plain excellent. The directions are for 10-12 minutes in a conventional oven - no microwave to spoil it. The crust is thick, delicious, and made form organic wheat flour and oat bran - better quality ingredients than bleached enriched flour.
Then there is the pizza sauce. I must get this recipe somehow! Amy's managed to get a sweet tasting sauce that didn't have that overpowering tomato-paste taste that I really dislike on most pizzas. I know they used tomatoes - it says so in the ingredients, but I wonder what else in it. They could bottle it, sell it and make bank just off that - it's that good (maybe they are already doing this?). The toppings are shiitake mushrooms, sweet onions and roasted red peppers and just add the perfect finish to this pizza.

I was intrigued by the Linda McCartney Mushroom and Spinach Pizza because although I am a bona-fide meat eater, I like to try something new every once in a while. Although I did like this products, I did have a few problems.
First, I begain reading the directions to see what I need to do to get this pizza cooking. Most of the frozen microwave type products that I have tried require you to place the pizza on a silver disk that's on the inside of the box, in order to get a crispy crust. If there is no silver disk, it's no problem - the crust can still be good. But Linda's pizza actually had the audacuty to tell me that it will be better on a silver disk - but then there is no disk in the box. Why Linda, Why? ... Where am I supposed to get a silver disk from? I also think this statement to be very ambiguous, because we all know that metals should not go in the microwave (or at least I hope most of us do), so if someone uses foil, this will cause sparks in the microwave *fire hazard*. AND If there is no disc included - why is it even a step in the directions?
Secondly, I don't know where you guys got that picture on the box, but the pizza looks nothing like what the real thing. All the mushrooms are in the middle of the pizza. I did like the flavor of the pizza. There was lots of cheese, and the spinach is actually in a layer below the cheese, and I thought all the ingredients worked well together. I didn't miss any meat taste at all. BUT, all the mushroom stuff in the middle of the pizza made it quite messy, and meant that I was getting quite a few bites with no mushrooms.
Thirdly, I could taste the garlic while eating the pizza, but there was a bit too much in my opinion, because I had garlic breath and a garlic taste left in my mouth for quite some time after I finished eating this.
... continue reading »Tombstone Light Veggie Pizza
Tombstone Veggie Pizza actually has dairy ingredients, in the form of the shredded mozarella cheese made from skim milk, so it's technically not "vegan." But there are no meat toppings, and instead, you will find broccoli, red bell peppers, green onions, black olives and mushrooms. This pizza tastes pretty good, but is a bit bland. I wish they would add some kind of spicy sauce, or salsa, or something else to kick up the flavor a notch.
One serving is 1/5th of a pizza, and the pizza is a big 12 incher. But 1/5th? I think 1/4th is more likely what most people will eat (or maybe 1/2). But 1/5th of the pizza has 230 calories, 6 grams of total fat and 2 grams of saturated fat, which amount to about 10% of the daily value. There's also 510 mg of sodium, which is 21% of the daily value, 4 grams of fiber and 13 grams of protein. You can also get 20% calcium and 15% of your vitamin A daily requirements.

The Challenge: To find another healthy pizza option that's as good as South Beach Diet Grilled Chicken and Vegetable Harvest Wheat Crust Pizza. The challenger: Lean Cuisine Deluxe Pizza! The match: A good fight, but the winner was clearly obvious:- South Beach Pizza all the way.
Lean Pockets Low fat Four Cheese Pizza
When the words 'pizza' and 'four cheese' come up on a food label, I don't usually think of these as healthy options, but since these are 'Lean' Pockets, they must not be too bad for you - right? Well, the first thing to do is check out the nutrition. Each pizza pocket has 290 calories, 7 grams total fat, 3.5 grams saturated fat (no trans fat), and 690 mg sodium (29% of the recommended daily allowance) - a bit too high. If carbs are important to you - there are 44 grams in this - it even sounds high to me, and I don't know a thing about counting carbs - but there are only 9 grams of sugars, plus you get 15-30% of a few vitamins and minerals. So not too bad - except for the sodium. I can't say I would have this for breakfast though - too many calories. If you compare it with Lean Pockets Supreme Pizza (check out the review), then the Supreme is actually 200 calories, and less fat at 7 grams, and less sodium, 540 mg.
South Beach Diet Grilled Chicken and Vegetable Harvest Wheat Crust Pizza
South Beach Diet frozen meals are usually more expensive than the other frozen dinners like Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice and Weight Watchers, so it makes it hard to buy them when you have cheaper options less than 2 ft away, but it's so hard to find supposedly health pizza in the grocery stores, so I thought this was worth a try. I picked up the Grilled Chicken and Vegetable variety and it was too delicious. You could immediately identify that the vegetable topping was spinach and this was an excellent choice, because it made the pizza flavorful, and definitely different from the usual pepperoni blah blah (and I don't even like spinach). They didn't skimp on the chicken either and you can expect to have a piece in every bite.
Lean Pockets Supreme Pizza
One slice of pizza can sometimes have more calories and fat than an entire 'healthy' dinner. But for some reason, people just love the taste of pizza, myself included of course! So pair the word pizza with the word lean, and it's definitely worth a try. Before even going to what this tastes like though, lets check out if this Lean Pocket Pizza is really ... lean. The front of the box proudly proclaims that there are only 6 grams of fat and 200 calories in each pizza pocket (the box comes with 2). So far, so good. Turning over the box to get a look at the rest of the nutrition shows that this is not the evil add-fat-to-thighs pizza that I thought it might be. Only 2 grams of saturated fat, 25 mg cholesterol, 540 mg sodium (23% of the daily value), 7 grams of fiber and 24 grams protein. It's just a wee bit on the high side for sodium, but let's face it, this is probably the best we'll ever get for anything with the word pizza in the name.
