Snickers Marathon Nutrition Bar (Honey & Toasted Almond)

Snickers Honey & Toasted Almond Marathon Nutrition BarI was in the grocery store with my friend Rachel the other day, and I was on the hunt for a nutrition bar. As I scanned over the Balance and Kashi Bars that I tend to gravitate towards, my eyes lit on a Snickers Marathon Nutrition Bar in Honey & Toasted Almond. Snickers - a nutrition bar? Get outta here! Needless to say, I had to sample this. Plus, Rachel gave me her seal of approval, so it was a no-brainer: I picked one up for $1.89.

NUTRITION FACTS
Serving Size: 1 bar (44 grams)
Calories: 150
Total Fat: 4.5 grams, 7%
Saturated Fat: 2 grams, 10%
Sodium: 125 mg, 5%
Protein: 10 grams
Carbohydrates: 22 grams
Fiber: 7 grams, 28%
Sugar: 10 grams
Price: $1.89 ea.
Later that day, I opened the Marathon Bar to sample it. The bar was similar to other Snicker bars I've had in appearance, consisting of a grain-rich matrix dipped in (milk) chocolate. It smelled sweet, and I took a bite. The honey was overpowering, and the combination of that with the almond flavor was too much. Still, I ate the whole thing, to see if giving it a little more time would make it better (it didn't).

The one thing the Snickers Marathon Honey & Toasted Almond Nutrition Bar does have going for it is nutrition. Each 44.2 gram bar provides that's for sure, weighing in at 150 calories, 10 grams of protein and sugar, and 28% of the daily value for fiber.

Gnu Foods Espresso Chip Flavor & Fiber Bar

Gnu Foods Espresso Chip Flavor & Fiber BarWhen I stumbled across the Gnu Foods Espresso Chip Flavor & Fiber Bar, it went into my cart right away ... Espresso? Excellent. Chocolate chips? Even better. I like Gnu bars in general, and I couldn't wait to try this new variety. Gnu says, "the Espresso Chip Gnu Bar is a smooth blend of rich, ground coffee with tasty chocolate chips. The bold flavors will excite and delight your taste buds."

I took a bite of the chewy bar. I liked the espresso taste, and the chocolate chips were a nice touch. This was earthier than more candy bar-like bars (e.g. Fiber One Chocolate Mocha Bar), but it was satisfying in its own way. This will join the Gnu Foods Peanut Butter Bar in my go-to Gnu bars.

Fiber One Chocolate Mocha Bar

Fiber One Chocolate Mocha BarFiber One bars seem to be recognized by more individuals than not. However, Fiber One is always coming out with new flavors and varieties to keep your taste buds from getting bored. Therefore, when I discovered Fiber One Chocolate Mocha Bar (and having tasted the yummy Oats & Strawberries with Almonds variety), I decided to give these babies a go.

The second I opened the wrapper, it was as though I had walked through the front door of a Starbucks Coffee Shop. The coffee aroma is bold, pungent and appealing. The actual flavor is a nice balance between chocolate and coffee, which makes for a delectable mocha flavor. The texture is typical of all Fiber One Bars: gooey (but not overly sticky), compact oats and crisped rice, chocolate chips dotted throughout and a small drizzle of chocolate to top it all off. Most of all, I really love the chew that Fiber One Bars provide.

Balance (Original) Peanut Butter Bar

Balance Peanut Butter BarI've tried lots of different varieties of nutrition and snack bars, so I have a short list of my favorites as well as my least favorites. I was actually looking for one of my old standbys while in the drugstore today, but I found that the one I was looking for was out of stock. I scanned the various other types, and, as I bemoaned the unavailability of my preferred flavor, stumbled upon a new, fantastic bar in the process. That bar? Balance Peanut Butter Bar.

I don't know why I haven't really gotten into the Balance Bar brand before now, because really, they're delicious! This one was especially good - the peanut butter taste was perfect (a word I don't use lightly). It wasn't at all artificial-tasting, just chewy and peanutty. Honestly, my first thought on eating this was, "I've died and gone to peanut butter heaven woo." I couldn't believe how quickly I finished it!

Balance Chocolate Cashew Pure Bar

Balance Chocolate Cashew Pure BarThe Balance Pure Bars come in enticing flavors like Cherry Pecan, Banana Cashew, and Chocolate Cashew. These bars are described as being made from "wholesome ingredients like real fruits and nuts, plus 9 grams of protein for energy." Intrigued, I decided to try the Chocolate Cashew and when I flipped over the bar to examine the ingredients, I discovered the claims were true; the ingredients were only evaporated cane juice invert syrup, cashews, soynuts, dates, cocoa (processed with alkali), soy protein isolate, peanut oil, and salt.

I picked up a bar for $1.49 and eagerly opened it. The bar looked a lot like a Larabar - thick and chewy, as well as dark and chocolatey. I took a bite, savoring the chocolate and cashew combination. I liked the fact that there were actual cashew pieces studding the chocolate base. The texture was chewy and satisfying, and the taste was very good.

Kellogg's FiberPlus Antioxidants Dark Chocolate Almond Bars

Kellogg's FiberPlus Antioxidants Dark Chocolate Almond BarsI could not resist the promise of both fiber and antioxidant power in the Kellogg's FiberPlus Antioxidant Bars, so I grabbed a box of the decadent sounding, Dark Chocolate Almond flavor to try. I found these for $1.88 and there was a coupon for $1.00 off 2 boxes on the back of both boxes. Nutritious and inexpensive to boot so I was certainly hoping for the best.

Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my high expectations. The bar flavor was very mild - I don't like overly sweet bars, but this was too bland even for me. You can't see whole almonds in these bars and although there are pieces scattered throughout, there doesn't seem to be enough to add to the flavor or texture. I could taste a mild dark chocolate flavor which was the only saving grace.

Kellogg's FiberPlus Antioxidants Chocolate Chip Bar

Kellogg's FiberPlus Chocolate Chip Bar

Being a fan of the high fiber, Fiber One Bars, I was very excited to try out Kellogg's FiberPlus Chocolate Chip Bar. Kellogg's says, "these bars have 35% of your daily fiber, antioxidants vitamin E and zinc and whole grains mixed with chocolate chips."

These bars are very similar in texture and nutritional value to the Fiber One bars, with each providing 9 grams of fiber per bar, or 35% of the daily recommended value. They both have a chocolate bottom coating and chocolate drizzled all over the top, and a soft, gooey texture. I love chocolate, but I found myself overwhelmed by the sweetness of these bars. In fact, from the taste of these bars, I am surprised at the relatively low sugar count. It was a little light though, and it wouldn't really soothe the chocolate craving I had.

Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Berry & Almond Fruit and Nut Bar

Kelloggs NutriGrain Berry & Almond Fruit and Nut BarWhen I went to my cousin's wedding in New Hampshire, I took the bus up and back from NY. I don't do well on bus rides, as I have a tendency to get motion sick very easily, so I like to keep some snacks on hand to help my stomach. I wasn't adequately prepared this time, though, and when I got out at the rest stop and saw that Burger King, Dunkin Donuts, and a small convenience store were my food-buying options, I wasn't optimistic.

I wandered around for a little bit to scope out the fare. I saw plenty of candy and chip options - not exactly what I was going for. There were pre-made sandwiches, too, but who knows how long ago they were made! My eyes fell on a Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Fruit & Nut Bar, Berry Almond flavor, and I decided to go with that. I hadn't tried it before, but when I flipped the bar over to examine the nutrition facts, I was sold. Each 32-gram bar provides 120 calories, 3.5 grams of fat (no saturated or trans fats), 100 mg of sodium (4% of the daily value), 3 grams of fiber, 11 grams of sugar, and 3 grams of protein. That's a little better than other fruit and nut bars, like Nature Valley Chewy Trail Mix Bar.

Atkins Endulge Caramel Nut Chew Bar

Atkins Endulge Caramel Nut Chew BarI went to the drug store looking for something to satisfy a sweet craving, and I stumbled upon Atkins Endulge Caramel Nut Chew Bar. I didn't want to get a real candy bar, so I figured this would be a good compromise. I plunked down my $1.99 (a bit on the steep side) and prepared to enjoy ... caramel, peanuts and nougat, all dipped in a rich chocolaty coating ... didn't sound like a "nutrition bar" to me, but I was ready for the experience.

I unwrapped the bar and saw what appeared to be a candy bar. Moreover, when I took a bite, it tasted like a candy bar too! The chocolate coating was delicious, and the peanuts were a great touch. The nougat center was chewy and statisfying, and the caramel coating was perfect. What a great combo of sweet and salty, chewy and crunchy.

Atkins Advantage Chocolate Peanut Butter Bar

Atkins Advantage Chocolate Peanut Butter BarA few weeks ago I saw that one of my friends unwrapping an Atkins Advantage Chocolate Peanut Butter Bar. Initially, I scoffed, "Is that an Atkin's bar?" I asked with raised eyebrows. I trust this friend's judgment and was shocked that she would consume such a unappetizing, not to mention embarrassing bar. However, when she offered me a bite, I was blown away. This isn't a "nutrition bar." It's a Reese's Peanut Butter Bar. Hand on heart, this might be better than a Reese's.

I think they might have just packaged up a Reese's and sold it to me in another wrapper. Regardless, it's protein-loaded (19 grams!) and kept me tided over for a solid 3 hours, something which an ordinary peanut butter cup only dreams of.

South Beach Living Fiber Fit S'mores Bar

South Beach Living Fiber Fit S'mores BarAs a college student on the go, I have come to rely on nutrition bars for when I'm hungry between classes and do not have time to seek out healthy food. I am a huge fan of the Fiber One Bars because of their high fiber count and delicious taste, but I have been getting a little bored with them, so I decided to try out another fiber-packed bar- South Beach Living's Fiber Fit bar in S'mores.

When it comes to taste and appearance, I would never know this was not a naughty candy bar. There is a thick layer of marshmallow atop a chocolate covered granola bar, with chocolate drizzle over the top of the marshmallow ... delicious! I felt like I was eating a real S'more around a campfire. I had to check over the label while I was eating to make sure I hadn't misread the calorie count, which was only 120. I was surprised that something this delicious and dessert-like could pack in 9 grams of fiber as well (35% of the recommended daily value).

ZonePerfect All Natural Dark Chocolate Nutrition Bars

Zone Perfect All-Natural Dark Chocolate Nutrition BarsGoing to the gym is a regular activity for me, and I'm often on the lookout for tasty, satisfying nutrition bars to fuel my workout. I've tried lots of different varieties like Kashi, Clif and Luna bars, and found that they're all pretty good. However, sometimes I'm in the mood for something a bit more decadent with dark chocolate instead of the often-cloying milk chocolate flavors. So nothing could stop me from buying Zone Perfect All-Natural Dark Chocolate Nutrition Bars the instant I saw it in the grocery store. The first varieties I sampled were Dark Chocolate Almond and Double Dark.

First up: Dark Chocolate Almond. I unwrapped the sizeable 45 gram bar, and took a bite. It was delicious! The dark chocolate flavor was not artificial like some nutrition bars (PowerBar, I'm looking at you!), and the almonds were a wonderful touch. When I tried the Double Dark Chocolate flavor, I was equally impressed; delicious dark chocolate mingled with soy protein nuggets (these were basically just crispy pieces that added some interest to the texture). I almost felt like I was eating a candy bar (granted, some would argue that nutrition bars are merely glorified candy, but I would argue that they provide other nutrients as well).

NuGo Smarte Carb Sugar Free Chocolate Black Cherry Bar

NuGo Smarte Carb Sugar Free Chocolate Black Cherry BarI have an inherent bias against products whose names are spelled in "inventive ways," so NuGo "Smarte" Carb Bar was almost a no go. However, always curious to try a new nutrition bar, I put aside my skepticism and decided to give NuGo Smart Carb Sugar Free Chocolate Black Cherry Bar a go. I have to admit, what really drew me to the package was the 16 grams of protein advertised on the front of the wrapper, not the picture or the fact that this bar is sugar free.

The basic composition of the bar includes crispy soy nuggets dipped in sugar free milk chocolate. As for the appearance - the soy nuggets are an ... interesting color. They're very unnaturally pink. I think it must be from the beet color listed in the ingredients. Very strange. Almost strange enough to make me reconsider trying the bar, but since I had already spent my $1.50, I closed my eyes and took a bite.

This bar tasted much better than it looked, thankfully! The milk chocolate coating mixed well with the cherry flavor, and the crispiness was just right. I was satisfied for a couple of hours after eating this, which is one of my requirements in a nutrition bar. It's not very sweet - and contains sugar alcohols, but I didn't notice any adverse effects from this.

Luna White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Bar

Luna White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Bar

Luna has a winner on their hands with this combination of white chocolate and macadamia nuts. This bar is amazing (and Luna bars have never been a favorite of mine). A crisped rice base is graced with a coating of "vanilla, white chocolate-like" sweetness and drizzled on the top with a bit more of the great tasting vanilla confection. Furthermore, the organic macadamia nut butter and macadamia nuts dispersed throughout takes this bar up to a whole other level. Honestly, I think this may be my favorite Luna bar flavor ever. It tastes more like a treat or a dessert than a breakfast addition. On the other hand, it is not over-the-top in respect to its sweetness. But don't just take my word for it, Juliet over at Yummy Diet Food is also a fan.

Doctor's CarbRite Diet Toasted Coconut Bar

Doctor's CarbRite Diet Toasted Coconut BarDo you like coconut? Then you should try Doctor's CarbRite Diet Toasted Coconut Bar. This bar is particularly great because not only is the coconut taste spot-on, but the texture is deliciously flaky and chewy at the same time. The chocolate coating offsets the coconut nicely too. Other coconut flavored bars have been reviewed on here on Iateapie.net before, like Simbree Cashew Coconut Energy Bar and Raw Revolution Coconut and Chocolate Organic Live Food Bars, but this Doctors' bar has some definite advantages over the other two.

For example, while the Simbree and Doctor's bars clock in at approximately the same number of grams of fat (7 total grams [8 grams less than the Raw bar] and 1.5-2 grams of saturated fat), the Doctor's Bar weighs 57 grams and has 18 grams of protein, while Simbree is only 42 grams with 6 grams of protein. And unlike the 265-calorie Raw bar, Doctor's product has 200 calories.

Doctor's CarbRite Diet Sugar Free Frosted Cinnamon Bun Bar

Doctors CarbRite Diet Sugar Free Bar in Frosted Cinnamon BunSee this picture? I wanted a better one, but honestly, that's all that was left after I tore through this Doctor's CarbRite Diet Sugar Free Bar Frosted Cinnamon Bun. I was looking for a different high protein bars, and remembered liking these bars when I had them in college, so I decided to purchase this for $1.79.

This bar is fantastic. It tastes like a perfect combination of cinnamon and vanilla frosting - the two best parts of a cinnamon bun. It's also quite soft and just sort of melts in your mouth yummy. At 57 grams, it's a sizeable bar, too, so it tides you over for a while.

Gnu Orange Cranberry Bar

Gnu Orange Cranberry BarI like Gnu Foods Flavor and Fiber Bars, I really do. At least, I like the flavors I've had so far like Cinnamon Raisin and Peanut Butter, plus Chocolate Brownie and Banana Walnut are pretty good as well. That's why, when I tried the Orange Cranberry flavor, my first thought was, "Why, Gnu Foods, why?!" yuck

This flavor further reaffirmed my dislike for fruity bars, a dislike very much fueled by my trying SoyJoy Bars. Unlike the SoyJoy bars, though, this one wasn't dry and pasty. Instead, it was overpoweringly sweet and artificial (though moist and chewy). It was predominately orange-flavored, with some cranberries studded throughout. I could barely finish the bar that I bought, but since I paid $1.99 for it, I forced myself to eat it all.

Balance Yogurt Honey Peanut Bar

Balance Yogurt Honey BarBalance Bars somehow don't have all the glam associated with Lunabars or Kashi bars for that matter, but they have quite the selection, and their bars are usually decent although not necessarily "wow." They have Balance Original, Balance Bare, Balance Pure, Balance Gold and Balance Carbwell, each of which offer different nutritional highlights. When I saw the Balance Yogurt Honey Peanut Bar (part of the Balance Original line), I thought why not?! Strangely enough, when I eat yogurt, I rarely have it with peanuts, and when I have honey, it's usually with tea. I mean, can those three ingredients even go well together?

Balance Yogurt Honey BarWell, I was about to find out. I picked up the bar for $1.99 at a convenience store (pretty pricey, but I was in a hurry and the prices are no doubt jacked up compared to normal stores). Turns out the "yogurt" is just a shell of milky coating on the outside of the bar surrounding a chewy, peanut buttery inside. Yum! With the flavor of the latter two ingredients predominating, I was in peanut butter heaven eating this. In just a few bites it was gone, and I was left with only the wrapper to study. Larabar Chocolate Cherry Jocalat Bar

Larabar Chocolate Cherry Jocalat BarAfter taking one bite of Larabar Chocolate Cherry Jocalat Bar, I was in love. This bar combines the best components of 3 bars already reviewed here on Iateapie.net, Balance Almond Brownie Bar, Larabar Jocalat Chocolate Coffee Bar and Larabar Cherry Pie Bar.

The overall feel of the bar reminds me of a much moister version of the Balance Almond Brownie Bar. However, it does not stop there. The texture has bits of almonds and walnuts dispersed throughout to add a bit of textural difference. Furthermore, the unsweetened cherry pieces added to the mix contribute a natural burst of sweetness to every bite. I would even go as far to say that it resembled a soft brownie dressed up with nuts and dried cherries (mental note: try microwaving the bar next time). Have you tasted this delicious bar for yourself? Is my brownie comparison pushing the limits?

Fiber One Oats & Peanut Butter Bars

Fiber One Oats and Peanut Butter BarsThe vast array of "nutrition bars" in the supermarket aisles can be daunting. My strategy is to go for bars that have some "extra" nutritional content, such as high protein or lots of fiber. It's the impressive fiber content of the Fiber One Bars that make these a must-buy for me. The Fiber One Oats and Chocolate bars have already been given a thumbs up, so I decided it would be safe to venture in to another flavor and settled on the Fiber One Oats and Peanut Butter Bar.

The only other bars I have come across with more fiber have been the Gnu Bars with 12 grams. The Fiber One bars are pleasantly chewy and seem to melt in your mouth, while the Gnu bars are grainy and gritty. I could not even detect peanut butter in the Gnu Peanut Butter bar while the Fiber One Oats and Peanut Butter is satisfyingly creamy and sweet. Besides, the Fiber One bars are much easier to find because they are sold in most grocery or convenience stores. These may have been dubbed "glorified candy bars", but really are a better option when you get a sweet tooth. Plus, they are great for a little snack in between meals because they keep you from getting too hungry.
