Odwalla Carrot Juice
I had never had carrot juice before, and wasn't quite sure what to expect of Odwalla Carrot Juice. However, I love carrots, and some experiments in the kitchen have left me enjoying kale-banana smoothies, so I figured I was ready to venture into the world of vegetable juices.
First, a note about the nutrition. Odwalla Carrot Juice is 100% carrot juice, with the only ingredient being "pure pressed carrots." Fantastic! One bottle contains two 8 ounce servings, each of which has 70 calories, no fat, 1 gram of fiber, 13 grams of sugar, and 2 grams protein. Each serving also provides 520mg potassium (15% RDA), 400% Vitamin A, 4% calcium, and 4% iron. Pretty impressive!
Unfortunately, the taste was less than impressive. In fact, it was kind of gross. I smelled it before drinking, and it had a carrot-y odor - which wasn't surprising or bad - but unfortunately, it smelled like rotten carrots. I figured it couldn't possibly taste as bad as it
smelled, so I tentatively took a sip. Ugh! It was in fact just as bad as it smelled, if not worse. I'm not sure if I just don't like carrot juice in general, or if it was the brand - but this I will not be drinking again.
Old Orchard Pomegranate Blueberry Mangosteen Fruit Sense
Vitamin Water has, yet another, competitor. Old Orchard Fruit Sense line of drinks is a combination of various vitamins, fruit juice (5%) and water. There are a variety of flavors that all target a different audience: energy, cardio, protect, balance, and accelerate. I discovered the Cardio variety at the Target markdowns section (love that spot for interesting finds) and decided that 64 fl oz for $2.44 was worth a shot.
The "Cardio" variety has Pomegranate Blueberry and Mangosteen. I love all those, however, mix all of them into one drink and water it down ... and all of the sudden I am not sure what I like anymore. Even more, I am not sure how to describe this drink to you. It is a sweet, tangy, slightly watered down beverage that ends up being an odd tasting (and smelling) concoction. I have had this bottle in my fridge for about a month since I first tried it and have finally decided to toss the 3/4 full bottle down in the trash.

The benefits of water have been shouted from the rooftops for decades. "It makes you more energetic, boosts your metabolism, increases blood flow to the nether regions! It reduces hot flashes and makes your children able to calculate geometrical calculations!" We've gotten the message; we all should be drinking more water. Still, drinking more than a cup or 2 of water everyday sometimes feels so ... forced. Flavored water and diet drinks make it a bit easier to fill your quota without expanding your waistline, and Welch's Living Lightly Diet Juices line with that idea in mind.
There are 3 flavors available: Black Cherry, Peach/Pear, and Pomegranate/Berry. I went for the Black Cherry, as I wanted the simplest flavor. I unscrewed the top, took a sip, and ... BLEH! I barely swallowed a mouthful. This has that EXACT cherry flavor that is in cough syrup and kid's medicines. It tastes nothing like black cherries, maraschino cherries, or any kind of real fruit. It's sweet, but that medicinal flavor penetrates and tarnishes anything good about the rest of it. But like a good little girl, I held my nose and swallowed the rest - I'm loath to waste something I've spent money on. That is the only reason that I was able to get all of this down.

Years ago, Tropicana launched an orange "juice" drink called Tropicana Light, which had half of the calories and less than half of the sugar in normal orange juice. As wonderful as that sounds, the results were more than disappointing - it was downright sour. Recently, they decided to re-launch the line as Trop50, by using Purevia as the sweetener.
PureVia is a stevia-derived natural no calorie sweetener. Note that this is not orange juice - it is made from orange juice and only contains 42% juice. When you start adding water and sweeteners to lower the calorie count, which is what Tropicana did with Trop50, well then, it's just an orange juice flavored beverage.
While three varieties exist (with pulp, pulp free, and fortified pulp-free), my store only carried the Pulp-Frree variety. Being a no-pulp OJ fan anyway, that was the one I brought home from the market. I gave the carton a good shake and poured up a glass of juice - and was surprised to see what looked like pulp. I did a double take; the carton was definitely marked "no pulp." Drinking mysteriously chunky orange juice is not a good way to start the day off! However, taking a sip proved all of my doubts wrong - this tastes like the regular Tropicana I know and love. While visually separated, the juice is smooth, sweet, tangy, and, of course, orange-y. There's no off sour or metallic flavors, and I didn't detect the bitter aftertaste that some people have noticed with Stevia. To be honest, if it weren't for the way this looks, I'd never have thought I was drinking anything other than 100% OJ. Check out the review from New England Bites and the snarky comments from Russ Thoughts.

CherryPharm is an "all-natural 100% fruit juice based on the powerful health benefits found naturally in cherries." There is a very informative chart on CherryPharm's website which details the antioxidant compounds found in tart cherries, acai, blueberry, noni & pomegranates - and it turns out that cherries have a more inclusive profile than the others. Plus, there is another website page which shows that the antioxidant power of 50 whole tart cherries, and CherryPharm (juice), which surpasses that of pomegranate, grape & blueberry juices (with on ORAC value of 13,015). Impressive!
The most striking thing about this juice, besides the health claims, is the taste. They should have put TART in big bold letters on the label. Do not underestimate the word "Tart" as seen in "Tart Cherry Juice" on the packaging. It was not possible for me to drink the 8 ounce bottle in 1 gulp. You are either going to love or hate this bitter/ tart flavor. I kept saying I hate it - but I would find myself taking a swig every minute or so until the bottle was entirely done in just a few minutes. But it also happens that I like tartness (Sour Patch Kids are my favorite candy if that tells you anything).
Another interesting thing was the aroma of the juice. They must obviously want you to think of this as a supplement or pharmaceutical, because it has a kind of medicinal aroma to it. There are 3 varieties, Natural Fruit Juice, Health Juice & Recovery Juice (which has 8 grams of protein from added Whey), and they all taste the same to me.The medicinal aroma defintiely took some getting used to - at first I wanted to hold my nose to drink this.

Naked Juice recently introduced their Bare Breeze line, which offers "a refreshing super-premium, 100 percent juice with no added sugar or preservatives." They debuted 2 flavors, Watermelon Chill and Peach Mangosteen Bliss, which is the flavor that I decided upon because the bottle boasts "All Natural 100% Juice" and "A pound of fruit in every bottle." It also details that it contains ¾ peach, ½ mangosteen, 2 ¾ apples, "lots of yummy white grapes", and a hint of lemon.
The most prominent fruit influence that I tasted was the peach, which gives it a sweet, summery flavor, while the underlying mangosteen makes it more tropical. The overall flavor is both refreshing and energizing without being too overpowering. In case you're not familiar with mangosteen, Wikipedia mentions that it is typically advertised and marketed as part of an emerging category of "superfruits" because of it's potential antioxidant strength, but it's nowhere near that of acai (read our review of Brazil Gourmet Acai Nectar).

I'm a big fan of Arizona Diet Green Tea with Ginseng, and while buying a couple of jugs of it, I saw a bottle of Arizona No Carb Blueberry Green Tea sitting all alone on the shelf. Since it was the last bottle, I decided to try it for myself - who knows, I might discover another favorite Arizona beverage.
When I got home, I poured a glass of this crimson/purple-hued tea over some ice and took a sip. The bottle states just what it tastes like "pure green tea with the wonderful sweet and tart punch of blueberries." The drink has just the right amount of sweetness - just enough, and nothing overly saccharine. The berry flavor isn't overwhelming - rather, it coincides peacefully with the flavor of the tea. But naturally, this is just a 'flavor' - there is no blueberry juice in this. It does say "no carbs" so I figured (and you should too), that there would be no fruit juice - or such a minimal amount that there would be no benefits from it. Make no mistake, this is mainly "blueberry flavored tea" - not that there is anything wrong with that.
... continue reading »Tropicana Strawberry & Banana Fruit Smoothie
There are 2.5 servings of fruit per bottle of Tropicana Fruit Smoothies, which is certainly admirable - except for the fact that the smoothies are made mostly from fruit concentrates, which means that the nutrients are removed. But, I was curious, so I picked up the Tropicana Strawberry & Banana Fruit Smoothie to try it out.
I'm totally guessing here - but what makes this seem like a "smoothie" is the fact that it has a thick consistency - thicker than fruit juice. Otherwise, this was very similar in taste to fruit juice, and it definitely has the *yum* factor. It's sweet and fruity with a strong strawberry taste, and not too much banana which can be very overpowering. Still, the most noticeable thing about this was it was very sweet - too sweet in fact.
The price of an 11 ounce bottle was $2.29 so I could easily have bought a bag of apples for close to that amount, and it would have given me more fiber plus lasted longer than the 2 minutes it took me to drink this.

With warmer weather and longer nights, memories of summer come drifting through my mind. Days on the beach, picnics in the park ... ahhh, youth. Hawaiian Punch, like sand castles and swing-sets, is something that we usually outgrow and leave in our memories. In the case of Hawaiian Punch, its high-fructose corn syrup and unnatural red dyes are best left in the past, but when I saw the new "Light" version I couldn't resist picking it up and waxing nostalgia one more time.
The flavor is the same classic tal taste that is familiar to anyone who has had the original. Pineapple is the first thing that you taste, along with a myriad of other tropical juices in the background. Nothing beyond the pineapple is too distinct though, but they all meld together in harmony. The Light Hawaiian Punch is a bit less sweet than the regular, but the difference is welcome - it actually tastes more like a natural juice, despite the fact that it's sweetened with Splenda. Thankfully, there is no bitter or metallic taste, which used to accompany many artificially sweetened beverages.
... continue reading »Simply Grapefruit Juice
The current advice offered by dietitians is not to drink juice if you are trying to lose weight because you need to cut as much sugar as you can in the diet. However, in an effort to get as many natural vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants in my body, personally I drink natural juices once every few weeks. The means, not juices from concentrate, because by definition, juice concentration has had all the nutrients removed.
Simply Grapefruit is produced by the Simply Orange Juice Company - (which is now owned by Coca Cola). This is one of my favorite line of juices because their products are 100% natural, pure juice - no added sugar, water or preservatives. You don't have to look to see if the "grapefruit" juice is actually more apple and pear (like Minute Maid Enhanced Pomegranate Blueberry Juice which actually has more apple and grape juices).
And of course, Simply Grapefruit is simply delicious (you knew that pun was coming didn't you). This pulp-free version is tart, like grapefruit juice should be. The rich pink and red colors of grapefruit are due to the presence of the anti-oxidant, lycopene (same nutrient found in tomatoes) and helps contribute to the high antioxidant activity of grapefruit juice (one of the highest among juices). Lycopene is also being studied closely because it seems to have a beneficial effect in fighting prostate cancer. More on this can be found at WHFoods.

Minute Maid has a line of Enhanced Juices which includes Heartwise Orange Juice which aids in reducing cholesterol (read our glowing review), MultiVitamin and Active Orange Juices plus the new Pomegranate Blueberry Juice which has omega-3 fatty acids/ DHA to "Help nourish your brain."
This juice tastes just sweet with no tartness and it doesn't really taste like pomegranate juice. In fact, the taste reminds me a lot of TrueBlue Blue Berry Juice. Minute Maid says that this a 100% juice blend, but don't get excited or fooled into thinking this is 100% pomegranate and blueberry juice. Instead the ingredients - in order from most to least - are apple, grape and pomegranate juices from concentrate, fruit and vegetables juices (for color), blueberry juice from concentrate, natural flavors, raspberry juice from concentrate ... DHA algal oil, added vitamins.

Promise activ SuperShots is the first fruit and yogurt mini-drink with added natural plant sterols, ingredients clinically proven to help actively lower cholesterol (as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol). A serving of Promise activ provides 2.0 grams of plant sterols (a total daily intake of at least 0.8 grams of plant sterols, as part of a low saturated fat, low trans fat and low cholesterol diet, may help reduce the risk of heart disease).
I wouldn't buy Promise activ for any other reason than to help reduce your cholesterol (and I am a believer in the effects of plant sterols), because the bottles are so small - this really is like a "shot." I bought a 4 pack of the strawberry flavor of and was pleasantly surprised with the taste. It is slightly tangy and not too sweet, with a smooth, milky consistency (not very thick), although there is not much trace of strawberry flavor in this.

Read the reviews of Strawberry Banana and Pomegranate Blueberry Juice, and you'll see why I seriously considered sending Campbell's (who owns V8) a thank you note for making drinking my vegetables a pleasant experience. So when I happened across the V8 Fusion Light Juice, I did a little happy dance right there in the grocery store. Could V8 actually make their LIGHT juice taste just as good as the original, with the same 1 serving of fruit and vegetables per cup, but with 50% less calories and sugar?
Yes they can, is what I discovered. The Peach Mango flavor has, as they say, "all the taste of luscious fruits like peaches and mango, and the nutrition of vegetables." It is sweet and robust with maybe a little more peach than mango in taste. But I forgave them for that indiscretion because this juice is just 50 calories per serving.

V8 VFusion is a blend of vegetables and fruit juices. Each serving has a full serving of vegetables PLUS a full serving of fruit. The Strawberry Banana variety of VFusion has been previously reviewed, but when I saw the Pomegranate Blueberry Antioxidant variety, I had to give it a second shot. The taste of this juice is just perfect - not too sweet from the juice, and not too much of an overwhelming taste of veggie juice either.
The ingredients are reconstituted vegetable juice blend (sweet potatoes, purple carrots, tomatoes and carrots), reconstituted fruit juice blend (apples, white grapes, pomegranates and blueberries) and less than 2% of natural flavoring, malic acid, ascorbic acid and vitamin E.

Ah-mazing! Another great tasting beverage from Odwalla. PomaGrand Pomegranate Mango is a blend of pomegranate juice (from concentrate), mango, apple juice and 'wild berry extract' which includes a blend of chokeberry, elderberry, blueberry and blackcurrant. The result is great. There is a strong taste of mango, perhaps overpowering some of the other flavors, but the pomegranate /berry-ish flavor comes out too. The juice is thick and sweet and I loved it. Some people might (have the audacity) to say that Odwalla might have gone a bit overboard with the intense mango vibe, but I'm from the tropics so I'm definitely a fan of it.
Floridas Natural Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice: One Year Later
One year ago on Oct. 10, 2005, I reviewed Florida's Natural Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice [link]. I gave it 3.5 out of 5 kisses because it was sour despite having 20 grams of sugar per serving. BUT, this is 100% juice and I really like grapefruit juice - I like it sour and tart although it's not something I could drink every week.
So one year later, I still stand by the review and my rating. Check it out here.
Apple and Carrot Juice
Almost everyday I make my own juice. This morning's juice was made from McIntosh apples and carrots using the Jack La Lanne juicer. I loved the taste of juice. It was sweet, but with a slight tartness because McIntosh apples are quite acidic /sour. The carrot taste was only minimal I used 5 carrots and 3 apples. The carrots gave it that deep rich orange color, and although there won't be much fiber, as somebody pointed out in the comments on my apple and celery juice, that orange color is from beta carotene, which is an antioxidant and has a ton of other health benefits plus it gets converted into vitamin A in the body.
Apple and Celery Juice
This juice was made from McIntosh apples and celery using a Jack La Lanne juicer. You might be skeptical of the taste, and I certainly was, but rest assured, this was really good. It's hard to describe the taste of the juice, but it was like a 'tart' lightly apple flavored drink. The tartness was probably because McIntosh apples are quite acidic /sour, so it cuts down on some of the strong 'apple juice' taste, while still retaining some of the sweetness. I was worried about the celery aspect, but since celery is 90% water, there wasn't much of the "celery taste" in the juice, although it certainly smelled like celery.
Odwalla Berries GoMega Juice
The ingredients in Odwalla Berries GoMega Juice are apple juice, orange juice, cherry, peach, mango, blackberry and strawberry purees, ground flaxseed, lemon juice, inulin and ascorbic acid. Notice no preservatives and it is a 97% juice/puree blend. It tastes great! It has a smoothie like thickness, but because it has so many different fruit juices, it's hard for me to say which one it tastes like! I just know you won't be disappointed if you try this.
Odwalla GoMega juice has 100% of the daily value of omega 3 fatty acids (alpha linoleic acid) per bottle, which comes from the flaxseed. Omego 3 fatty acids have been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, are rich in fiber and may help protect against heart disesease and cancer. The World's Healthiest Foods has a very informative page on flaxseeds [link]. Another ingredient, inulin, is considered a form of soluble fiber, and it increases calcium and possibly magnesium absorption while promoting probiotic bacteria.
... continue reading »Dole Orange Peach Mango Juice
This is another great product from Dole. I'm already totally in love with Dole Fruit Parfait, and now it looks like Dole Orange Peach Mango 100% Juice has taken over from V8 Splash, as my favorite juice. The ingredients list for Dole reads filtered water, apple, orange, pineapple, grape, peach puree and mango juice concentrates, citric acid, natural flavor and ascorbic acid (vitamin C) - no added sugar! The juice tastes just like what you expect real fruit juice to taste like - slightly thick, and not watered down juice concentrate. I felt like I was really getting actual juice (unlike when I drink Juicy Juice). The combination of juices is also a winner in my book - although I really couldn't identify much mango taste. But there are so many different types of juices and mango is the last on the list, so I didn't expect that I would, but I was still a little disappointed.
