Dasani Essence Black Cherry Flavored Water

Dasani Essence Black Cherry Flavored WaterOne of the reasons people have a hard time leaving sodas alone, is that drinking plain water all the time can be rather boring. Sure, there's nothing like a glass of ice water after a long workout or on a hot summer day, however, usually when I'm looking to sip something, I like a bit of flavor to spice it up. To that end, I decided to try Dasani Unsweetened Lightly Flavored water in Black Cherry Essence. It didn't hurt that each bottle was on sale for $1.49 each, down from $1.99. That's still a bit higher than I like to pay for water, but I was sufficiently intrigued.

I opened the bottle as soon as I got home and took a sip. I can't say I loved the taste; I'm not a fan of Dasani water in general (I think it has a weird aftertaste), and this was a combination of that strange taste with a tiny hint of black cherry flavor. I actually ended up adding Crystal Light lemonade to this, which made it much better (is there a future for black cherry lemonade water, I wonder)?! Even the folks over at Bevnet agree, "While the aroma is definitely that of cherry, the flavor is only faintly recognizable. Furthermore, it's basically a bitter flavor, lacking the sweet note that helps balance out cherries and cherry flavored products."

Tropicana Summer Lemon Fruit Squeeze

Tropicana Summer Lemon Fruit SqueezeTropicana Pink Grapefruit Fruit Squeeze got rave reviews, and I'm here to tell you that the Tropicana Summer Lemon Fruit Squeeze is just as good.

While it tastes similar to watered down juice, it is better than that. The lemon component of the drink really ups the flavor profile with its sweet and tart nature. Overall, the drink is over-the-top refreshing and reminds me of a homemade glass of lemonade that is not too sweet. BevNet says, Summer Lemon is the best flavor in the Tropicana Fruit Squeeze lineup

La Croix Sparkling Water

La Croix Sparkling WaterWhile browsing through the Target markdown section, I spotted various flavors of La Croix Sparkling Water at $3.38 for a 12 pack. It caught my eye because I have trouble finding unsweetened (artificial or not) sparkling water in my area, so I took the opportunity to test out the Berry and Lime varieties.

As you pop the top off of the colorful can and bubbles billow to the top, remember that these drinks are not sweetened at all. Taking that into account, I thoroughly enjoyed La Croix Sparkling Water. It's not sweet, but they offer a refreshingly light way to feed your carbonation cravings. The Berry flavor has a hint of berries beneath the bubbly sensation of each sip that is very delightful. The Lime flavor is just as delicious, with a light, but very present, limey essence.

Vitazest Passion Fruit Water

Vitazest WaterFlavored water seems to be on the rise these days. I love how you can get everything from drink mixes, such as Crystal Light White Tea Blueberry On the Go Packets; lightly flavored waters, such as Hint Pear Water to vitamin enhanced waters such as Dasani Plus Cleanse + Restore Vitamin Enriched Flavored Water Beverage.

I spotted Vitazest Water on the shelf, in flavors like Passion Fruit, Mango Cherry, Orange, Pineapple Mango, Blueberry, and Kiwi Strawberry, priced at 4 for $5, so I decided to pick up a couple of bottles. Vitazest Pineapple Mango Vitamin and Fruit Enriched Water has already been reviewed, so I decided to try something new first, the Passion Fruit flavor. Ahhh ... refreshing - not overpoweringly sweet, just the way I like it. No chemical-ish taste, like some other waters. As for the taste of "passion fruit" - well, I detected a sweet fruity note, but that was about it.

Sobe Lifewater Black and Blueberry

Sobe Lifewater Black and BlueberrySobe Lifewater was reviewed as Diet Trash because of the unexpected 50 calories per 8 ounce serving. But that was before they came up with their new 0 calorie formulation sweetened with the "natural" sweeteners, Stevia and erythritol. Given my affinity for said 0 calorie beverages, I was eager to try it. It didn't hurt that the bottles were on sale at 10 for $10! I snapped up a bottle of the Sobe Lifewater Black and Blueberry flavor and wondered what my "forti-fight" drink would taste like.

The taste was just okay; it certainly tastes way more like blueberry than any other drink I've had that's purported to taste like the wonder fruit. It wasn't my absolute favorite - the taste was somewhat overpowering for me, and I prefer citrusy beverages. However, it was refreshing. There are no 'off' flavors that some of the other 0-calorie flavored waters have.

VitaminWater 10 Multi-V Lemonade

VitaminWater Multi-VI'm sitting here drinking the new low-cal VitaminWater, and I just had to write about it. I've always been intrigued by the company's products, but steered clear of the regular flavors because really, 125 calories is just too much to waste on "water." However, when the company came out with their new 10-calorie per serving option, I had to try one. I decided to pick up VitaminWater 10 Multi-V (Lemonade) flavor to try it out, so I stopped by a drugstore where the bottles were on sale at 4 for $5.

I think the little captions on the front of the waters are really cute. This one talks about being multi-everything (multi-talented, multi-millionaire, etc.) and then goes on to talk about how the drink is "multi" in that it is loaded with vitamins and naturally sweetened. I turned the bottle more to see how those nutritional claims held up on the label and found that each bottle (because who's going to drink just 8 ounces) has 25 calories, no fat, 8 grams of sugar, and %RDA values for the following vitamins and minerals as follows: 25% for vitamin A, 100% for vitamin C, 10% for calcium, 25% for vitamins E, B3, B6, B12, and B5, 40% for folic acid, 10% for magnesium, and 25% for zinc. Not too shabby, especially if you prefer to enjoy your vitamins in the form of a pleasant drink instead of wolfing down huge pills.

R.W. Knudsen Sparkling Essence Cucumber Sparkling Spring Water

R.W. Knudson Sparkling Essence Cucumber Sparkling Spring WaterAre there any sparkling water fans out there?! Leave a comment and let us know. I was not a fan at all until recently, but ever since I have been drinking it regularly and I can't get enough. Recently R.W. Knudsen sent me flavors of their Sparkling Essence Spring Water to try out. Of course, I reached for the Cucumber flavor first, because that intrigued me the most.

When I opened the bottle I was immediately greeted by a strong scent of cucumber. The taste is crisp, not too much carbonation, and it is touched with a tinge of cucumber. Not as strong as you would guess. The aroma of cucumber is stronger than the taste. I liked it, but it was ... different. This is probably an acquired taste, but they also liked it over at Shrinking Sisters.

Hint Cucumber Water

Hint Cucumber WaterOh Hint Water, how do you make your flavors so delicious and thirst-quenching? After trying Hint Pear Waterr and reading the review of Hint Pomegranate Tangerine Water, I decided to branch out from fruit varieties and instead go for the Hint Cucumber variety, which I bought for $1.59 at the grocery store. This was about the same as other bottles of water, so I wasn't too perturbed by the price (again, New York prices)!

I was on my way to the gym, and hoped that the lightly flavored water would quench my thirst during a strenuous class. And quench it did! This is by far my favorite incarnation of unsweetened, flavored water. It's like the water you get at spas (basically a pitcher with cucumber slices in it, so you can make it yourself at home). It's unsweetened, but the cucumber flavor is so powerful and refreshing in a great way, so much so that I found this almost as easy to drink as Crystal Light Flavored Water (which I must say I drink all the time).

Fuze Empower Pomegranate Acai Berry Slenderize

Fuze Empower Pomegranate Acai Berry SlenderizeWith a name like "Empower," I figured the new Fuze Pomegranate Acai Berry Slenderize beverage must be good. The fact that money from the purchase goes to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure is an added bonus. This drink promises big things for an 18.5-ounce beverage - an "equal antioxidant capacity as 1 serving of vegetables per bottle, with polyphenols, chromium, vitamin C, super citrimax, and L-carnitine" (all of which are touted as providing health benefits like protecting against free radicals and upping energy.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the "pomegranate acai berry" flavor. I've had pomegranates before, but I've never tried acai berries (despite their myriad purported health benefits). Maybe this drink tastes like acai, but it definitely doesn't taste much like pomegranates. What it does taste like, though, is overpoweringly sweet sugar water. Not good! I finished the bottle only because I was incredibly thirsty.

Hint Pear Water

Hint Pear WaterI try to drink more water, I really do, but when the choice is between a diet soda and a boring bottle of water, I'll pick the diet soda every time. I love Crystal Light (except for the White Tea Blueberry flavor), but I sometimes feel like cutting down on my artificial sugar consumption. I've heard a lot about Hint Water - Pomegranate Tangerine and Peppermint flavors have been reviewed here - so I decided to pick up a bottle of Hint Pear Water for $1.59 and try it for myself.

I was curious as to what a 'pear' flavored water would taste, with no sugar. The only ingredients in this stuff are listed as: purified water with pear and other natural flavors. I took a cautious sip and found that I really enjoyed the flavor. The fact that the water isn't sweet made it more refreshing, but the pear flavor added a little "je ne sais quoi". The pear flavor is spot-on, too, not artificial at all - just light and refreshing.

True Lemon

True LemonI must admit - I'm a flavored water kinda girl. I like both the kind that's already bottled, like Dasani Plus or Fruit2O, and the kind you mix yourself (a la Crystal Light), because they not only taste good but they get me to drink more water as well. I like sampling different the different beverage flavors, but sometimes I just want to drink something a little less sweet. True Lemon offers just that.

I discovered True Lemon packets sometime in college, and I have been a devotee ever since. These packets are like your own portable lemon in the form of a powder. Each packet contains only citric acid, lemon juice, lemon oil, maltodextrin, and ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), with 0 calories and 25% of the RDA for Vitamin C. There are no sweeteners, so adding one of these guys to your water is like squeezing a slice of lemon into it then.

Fuze Slenderize Tangerine Grapefruit Flavor

Fuze Slenderize Tangerine Grapefruit FlavorFuze Slenderize Tangerine Grapefruit is my favorite flavor of the Fuze Slenderize line, and it is, in my opinion, much better tasting than the others - in fact, I'm going to go as far as to say that this tastes better than many of the low-calorie juice or flavored water I have ever tried.

I am not a huge fan of tangerine or grapefruit-flavored juices, but the taste this combination produces is outstanding. It's light and slightly sweet. Neither the tangerine or grapefruit are strongly present, but instead subtle hints are delivered in each mouthful. It's definitely not as tart as I thought it was going to be.

8 Low Calorie Beverages That Can Replace Soda

8 Soda AlternativesGiving up regular sodas is one of the most often mentioned pieces of advice when it comes to cutting down on calories, and improving general health. Rather than simply repeat this, we thought we would provide you with some alternatives. Below are 8 beverages that that can help you kick that soda habit.

1. Diet Soda. If artificial sweeteners don't scare you away, then this will at the very least, help you transition away from the regular sodas. Caffeine free diet Coke was instrumental in helping to wean me off traditional sodas, and eventually, I even gave up the 3-a-day diet soda habit.

Aquafina Sparkling2. Aquafina Sparkling Carbonated Water Beverage. There are no calories and it's fizzy like soda. We tried the Citrus Twist variety and loved it.

3. Arizona TeaArizona Diet Green Tea with Ginseng. Now this was what helped me give up diet and regular sodas totally. The taste is phenomenal - read the review.

4. Carnation Instant Breakfast No Sugar Added Nutritional Drink. This has the same amount of calories as regular soda (150 calories in an 11 ounce bottle), but this is a nutritious drink with 13 grams of protein, 2 grams of fiber and 25-50% of many vitamins and minerals. We love this stuff!

5. Diet Lipton Green Tea with Citrus. A little sweeter than flavored water, but not as sweet as fruit flavored beverages. There are no calories and we love this flavor.

Archer Farms Touch of Starfruit Water

Archer Farms Touch of Starfruit WaterAt a recent long distance running race in California, I got to try Hint Pomegranate Tangerine Water and was amazed by how well the "hint" of natural fruit flavoring enhanced the water. The problem was that in my neighborhood outside of California, I could only buy the water by the case or online. While in my local Target store a few weeks later, I saw a collection of similar looking bottles, but it was the Target brand Archer Farms "Touch of Starfruit" Water.

When I unscrewed the cap, the water was fragrant, and it tasted great too. The starfruit essence was definitely present but didn't overwhelm the crispness of the water. It was slightly sweet with just a slight hint of tartness. Even after I drained the bottle of all traces of water, I could still smell the starfruit scent, and I was left with a uniquely designed bottle that I could reuse to store my own filtered tap water before recycling.

I have seen lots of other flavored waters on the market, but many also have artificial flavorings or sweeteners that detract from the "healthiness" of water. The bottle labeling mentions that the water is all natural with 0 calories, no preservatives, and no artificial sweeteners. These claims definitely boost this water above sodas and other sugary drinks.

Powerade Zero

Powerade ZeroThere are a lot of sports drinks out there, all touting some kind of health benefit, but a closer look at these beverages reveals that, healthy and wonderful as these drinks may seem to be, many of them have about a lot of sugar and more calories than a "drink" should have! Imagine my excitement, therefore, when I saw that Powerade was offering a new line of zero-calorie sports drinks, aptly called Powerade Zero.

Powerade Zero is offered in three flavors: Grape, Mixed Berry and Strawberry. These drinks taste much like what I have come to expect from sports drinks - sweet with somewhat artificial flavors that still seem to be able to quench your thirst after a good workout. I liked the Strawberry flavor best, but they were all pretty appealing (if you like sweet drinks).

Vitazest Pineapple Mango Vitamin and Fruit Enriched Water

Vitazest Vitamin and Fruit Enriched WaterEveryone knows water is good for you. Unfortunately, I have a hard time getting myself to choose water over more exciting and "sparkly" beverages like soda and juice. I have been known to try and convince myself that Sprite is just like water because they're both clear ... pathetic, I know. But I am always on the lookout for a healthy water replacement, so when I passed by Vitazest Vitamin and Fruit Enriched Water I decided to give it a try, especially since they were on sale at 4 for $5.00. There were an abundance of flavors to choose from but the one that really sparked my interest was the Pineapple Mango.

The first thing I noticed about this "water" was how bright the color is. Vitazest has the appearance of juice. I got home, so excited to try this that I didn't even pour it into a glass. From the first sip, it tastes good ... really good. It's sweet but not overly so - just the right amount of flavor and thirst quenching goodness. Honestly, I had to recheck the label because I almost didn't believe it was "water."

O Water with a twist of Mandarin Orange

O Water"Water isn't pink. Water shouldn't taste like a popsicle. Fake sweeteners are scary. O has come to the rescue." Those are the words of the founders of O Water, and I couldn't agree more. I prefer flavored waters that have a splash of flavor, taste more like water, and less like like juice.

The Mandarin Orange flavored O Water was just as promised: clean, crisp taste of water accented with a splash of orange flavor - not sweet, no sugar and no artificial sweeteners. The orange flavor was more pronounced than in Hint Water - I found the Hint Pomegranate Tangerine Water to be a bit too light (almost non-existent).

Lipton Apple Cranberry White Tea to Go

Lipton White Tea to GoLipton White Tea to Go is a powdered mix that you add to water. But in addition, Lipton Tea to Go provides 80 mg of natural flavonoid antioxidants (helps protect your body against free radical damage), which is more than the amount in a serving of orange juice.

Add a packet to a 16.9 ounce bottle of water and you will get a sweet, tart tasting flavored beverage. Honestly, I didn't taste any apple or cranberry flavor, nor even any tea taste, but the good news is that I didn't get any much after-taste.

There are no calories in one serving, which is 1/2 a packet. Lipton White Tea to Go is made with natural tea - white and green tea powder are the 2nd and 3rd ingredients - but citric acid is the most abundant ingredient - and you can definitely taste it. The sweetener used is sucralose (Splenda).

Water Sensations Clear Liquid Enhancer for Water

Water SensationsIf you don't like plain water, or even if you just want ot mix it up a bit, then another option to buying flavored water is to use Water Sensations. This is a no calorie, flavored liquid that can be added to a 16 ounce bottle of water. The flavors are mixed berry, lemon, strawberry kiwi, peach, orange and grape, which is the one I tried. I really liked this method of adding flavor to water, although I have to say that the taste wasn't really of a "natural" grape flavor. Although I did get the grape essence, there was also a slight but noticeable tartness from citric acid. Nonetheless, I liked it and I would buy it again.

Dasani Plus Cleanse + Restore Vitamin Enriched Flavored Water Beverage

Dasani Plus Flavored WaterDasani Plus is vitamin enhanced water similar to Glaceau Vitamin Water and Propel Fitness Water. I tried the Cleanse+Restore variety which is flavored with pomegranate and blackberry. The taste of this beverage was pretty unremarkable and certainly there was absolutely NO pomegranate or blackberry flavor that I could detect. It is more like a general berry flavor with a slightly acidic, tart edge from the added citric acid. In fact, neither pomegranate nor blackberry is listed in the ingredients list. Sure there is the generic term "natural flavors" on the label, but that could be anything.

The vitamins added in the Cleanse+Restore variety are 10% of vitamin E, B3, B6 abd B12, and there are no calories. The sweeteners used are sucralose (Splenda) and acesulfame K.
