Penny's Low Fat Desserts Almond Poppy Seed Muffin Tops

Pennys Almond Poppy Seed Muffin Top.jpg

In case you haven't heard the news, we're gaga for Penny's Low fat (and All Natural) Desserts! After delving into the delicious Penny's Low Fat Desserts Chocolate Chocolate Chip Muffin Top, I immediately contacted the company and asked if they could send me some samples to review. I was too excited when the package from Penny's arrived, and after weighing my options, I decided to start with Penny's Almond Poppy Seed Muffin Top.

I popped the frozen top into a toaster for a few minutes and when my dorm started smelling like fresh baked sweet bread (and my roommates all came out inquiring what I was cooking), I knew it was time to dig in. The edges of my little "cake" got a little crispy, while the middle was as dense, soft and fluffy as could be. It was almost a little doughy, which I rather enjoyed. The almond flavor was present, but not overwhelming and the poppy seeds added their unique textural and flavor profile. It was delightful. And more importantly, it not only smells homemade, but tastes homemade as well. If you didn't tell me these were practically fat free, I would have thought someone's grandmother spent her afternoon whipping them up, Paula Deen style.

I cannot believe that each hefty 56 gram Penny's Almond Poppy Seed Muffin Top provides only 110 calories, 1 gram of fat, 17% of the daily value for fiber and 11 grams of sugar. The ingredient list starts off with water, whole wheat flour, sugar, dried plums, cellulose, milk and whole wheat flour. They are all natural and preservative free. They do use the sweetener erythritol (a sugar alcohol) and I must say, the ingredients list is a little lengthy for an all natural product. I would have preferred to see only "whole wheat" flour, instead of what is essentially "enriched wheat flour" and I also noticed there's no almonds in the ingredients list.

Penny's Almond Poppy Seed Muffin Tops can be purchased at their online store, $34.49 for a box with 24. It's not exactly cheap, especially since you have to purchase it in bulk, but then again, neither are VitaTops. I absolutely adore this product, and can't wait until it's available more widely.
