Earlier this week, I alerted you to a major peanut butter recall underway by King Nut which involved King Nut and Parnell's Pride Peanut Butter, due to contamination with Salmonella Typhimurium. 400 people in 43 states have already been infected with the outbreak strains.

King Nut are only distributors, and they cited their source as Peanut Corporation of America (PCA), a peanut processing company and maker of peanut butter for bulk distribution to institutions, food service industries, and private label food companies. PCA has now issued a recall for 21 lots of products produced on or after July 1, 2008. None of the peanut butter being recalled is sold directly to consumers through retail stores. They are suppliers to other companies.

Now, Kellogg's is pulling Austin and Keebler peanut butter crackers off U.S. store shelves while it investigates the source of the peanut filling.

The Battle Creek, Mich., company said it has not received any consumer illness complaints about the products but is recalling Austin and Keebler branded Toasted Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich Crackers, Cheese and Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, and Peanut Butter-Chocolate Sandwich Crackers as a precaution [Source: PackExpo].

What you can do: Again, now may be a good time to step away from peanut butter - especially if you give them to kids or older adults who can get seriously ill from Salmonella. Again, if you must have it, stick to brands that have put out notices definitely stating that they are NOT involved in the recall.
