Smart Choices LabelThere is yet another attempt afoot to make nutrition labels more consumer friendly. The new Smart Choices Label was developed by a diverse group of scientists, health and research organizations, manufacturers and retailers with the common goal of developing a single, trusted symbol that could help consumers make more nutritious food and beverage choices.

This new label features a big green check mark and shows the number of calories per serving, and the number of servings per package. The Smart Choices Label will appear on food products that meet certain criteria, such as:

* Total fat less than or equal to 35% of calories.
* Saturated fat less than 10%, zero trans fat.
* Added sugars less than or equal to 25% of calories.
* Cholesterol less than or equal to 60 mg per serving.
* Sodium less than or equal to 480 mg per serving.

While it is totally optional for companies use this label on their products, a few have already indicated they will be participating including Coca-Cola, ConAgra Foods, General Mills, Kellogg Company, Kraft Foods, PepsiCo, Unilever and Wal-Mart.

I personally like the detail on the back of the current nutrition label, so I really don't see the need to have anything else. Still, it seems like I might be in the minority with this opinion. What do you think? Do you think having a prominent, more readable "at a glance" label will help you determine which products are more nutritious?

The back does the trick for me.

I use the back fine, but I like how simplified this is.

I think its a good thing especially for beginners. I would still check out the back of the label but it seems like a good idea.

No, not at all. I think this is a bad idea; people will see that an immediately think that means it's a healthy product when it fact it contains partially hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, or is comprised entirely of chemicals!
I think people just need to be encouraged to read the nutrition facts and ingredients in everything they eat. I'm vegan, so I already do, but I really believe omnivorous people should too..
