New poll about foie gras
My personal opinion is that I don't care, and this is despite the excellent article on Accidental Hedonist about the implication of the government controlling what we eat [link] and the one that points to an individuals right to eat whatever they want, over at Megnut. When I first learned that a ban on foie gras was proposed in Chicago, I didn't know what foie gras was. Just in case you don't either, from from AskYahoo.com: Foie gras is the enlarged liver from a goose or duck that has been force-fed and fattened over a period of four to five months. These specially bred fowl are not permitted to exercise, which, combined with the overeating, creates a huge fatty liver Animal rights activists were outraged about the supposed inhumane treatment of force feeding ducks, but gourmands licked their fingers as this is a delicacy served in some fine dining establishments.
I am going to guestimate that less than 0.1% of the US population has ever eaten foie gras, and the average person has probably never heard of it and will never eat it in their lifetime - and that really is why I can't muster up the energy to be outraged about the ban. Honestly, I can think another substance / herb that I would like to see not banned anymore, and that substance has proven medicinal properties. So vote please, and let the world - or the people that read this website - know what you think.

Abi If they're going to ban foie gras, why not veal too? And what about lobsters being boiled alive? How much do other people get to say about what I choose to eat?

Teddy if you choose to eat why can't a goose choose to eat as well. those birds are FORCE fed. your desire to eat it's liver is more important to than the quality of life of another living being?

tg i think you are right that most people don't eat foie gras or care whether it's banned. what i think is potentially valuable in the discussion is not getting in a huff about "government intervention" but instead the chance to enlighten people who don't give any thought to how their food is processed... the people who just pick up "the cheapest eggs", the "cheapest chicken", the "cheapest pork", without realizing that the reason all that cheap food is cheap is because being processed in ways that are pretty awful/inhumane. so for me, foie gras serves a symbolic purpose to perhaps get people to start re-thinking how they shop. (personally, i find foie gras to be gross, so the ban will have no impact on my diet!)

George I am a foie gras lover. I love it's taste and used to have it at restaurants whenever on menu. Today while browsing the web I became aware of how it's made and read and saw lots about it. I came across GourmetCruelty.com and reading through it was so shocking to me that I decided never to eat foie gras again and become a supporter of banning foie gras. If one has to eat liver, surely there is other organic liver which is not made in such cruel way which is humanely produced and more healthy to eat! Post a comment
