Trends in the Grocery Aisles
August 18, 2006

After spending countless hours in grocery stores this year, looking for foods to review and finding diet trash, I have noticed quite a few changes and trends. Below is my own Top 5 + 1 list of trends in the 'healthy' grocery aisles for the first half of 2006:

Grocery Shopping 1) More natural /organic /healthy food sections in the grocery aisles.

2) Foods that improve health /nutraceuticals. Nutraceutical foods are those products enhanced to provide medical or health benefits. For example yogurts with probiotics, which help promote intestinal health, like Dannon Activia. Whole wheat flour seems to be increasingly replacing white, bleached enriched flour; and foods, such as cereals, with emphasis on fiber are on the rise too. Don't foget about those antioxidant rich fruit juices like Bossa Nova Acai and Pom Pomegranate.

3) Diet green & white tea beverages are coming out in abundance. Not only are they in the grocery stores, but they are in coffee shops too. My favorites so far are Diet Nestea Green Tea and Diet Lipton Green tea with Citrus. Snapple White Tea was new this year too - but it was just okay.

4) Lots more reduced fat, calorie, sugar products are becoming available. How will I ever review them all!

5) Soy, soy and more soy! It seems to be in everything.

6) More healthy (or supposedly healthy) convenience foods. Lean Cuisine is blazing the way with many, good tasting options for frozen foods. I'm also loving Michelinas Lean Gourmet, and Weight Watchers is catching up with more and more products. But what's going on with Healthy Choice? Nothing new from them.

Things I would like to see:
1) More supermarkets carrying culturally diverse foods. In Auburn, AL, this section was almost non-existent in most grocery stores. Salsa and tortillas does not make a "Mexican" section people! Thanks for plantains, but what about green bananas and yam (especially yellow yam - my Caribbean and Latin American people know what I'm talking about!)

2) I would love to see more people buying fish. Come on seafood industry - where is your "the other white meat" advertisement. Okay - I know fish is not meat, but you get the picture I hope.

3) Less foods with Splenda. I'm saturated!

I would LOVE to see less foods that contain Splenda and other fake sweeteners. How about just using LESS sugar??? What a novel idea...
