Hunger and Crave Control Foods
August 21, 2006

As I wrote the review for the new Dannon Light & Fit Crave Control yogurt [here], I remembered that I had previously reviewed another appetite suppressing food product, SlimFast Optima Hunger Control Shake [read the review]. It made me wonder if this will be the new direction of 'diet' foods - products that help control hunger. So far, these are the only two food products I have come across that use this term, but most of the diet pill industry is based on controlling cravings, so why not actual food products too.

SlimFast says "it's the first of its kind as a new option for weight loss, and the first real food product on the market to make hunger control claims both in advertising and on the label." How it works:

Based on the "Ileal brake principle." When fat reaches the lower part of the intestines, or ileum, it sets in motion a cascade of hormones that send fullness signals to the brain. The reformulated Slim-Fast is intended to help trigger this effect naturally, with a healthier, lower calorie product. The product is designed to tide people over through hunger spells, reducing temptation and controlling appetite. The result: dieters stay full for up to four hours [Source].

The Dannon Light & Fit Crave Control works on a different principle. It is made with ProteinFiberPlus. According to Dannon:

Studies have shown that consuming foods rich in protein and fiber help reduce hunger sensations. Dannon Light & Fit Crave Control contains more protein and fiber than lowfat yogurt (70 calories per 4 oz, 7 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber).

Whether you believe or disbelieve these claims, it is certainly interesting from a "what will they think of next" aspect. I will be keeping a keen eye out for more products.

I am eating a Crave Control Peach & Cereal yogurt now...tastes ok but the texture is funky. Maybe it's the texture that helps curb the appitite...ick.
