Share a low calorie food that is a part of your diet
October 6, 2006

I was wondering if you wonderful readers would care to share (in the comments) a low calorie food (or beverage) that is a part of your diet /healthy lifestyle.

One food - well it's really a beverage - that I use to help my late naight snack cravings is tea. Instead of the reaching for the snacks, I make a cup of hot tea. Since I love tea, I not only still enjoy this 'substitute' but I'm also getting few (if any) calories. I mix it with 2 packs of Splenda and sometimes 1 packet of sugar. And if I'm not satisfied, I just have another cup.

Come on now - share your 'secrets' with us.

Things I love:

- Hot green or jasmine tea (unsweetened)
- Sandwiches using Trader Joe's low-cal whole wheat bread (45 cals and 5 grams of fiber per SLICE)
- Kashi's GoLean cereal (110 calories and 10 grams of fiber for 3/4 cup)
- Fage Total Greek Yogurt 0% (60 cals for 4oz)... great w/ honey or frozen fruit...

-cottage cheese (I buy the regular 2% stuff because the fat free doesnt save very many calories and tastes horrid)

-fish (cod, halibut, sole, trout... as long as you poach/broil it, it is so good for you and quite low in calories)

-homemade veggie soups (veggie broth and any chopped veggies you have on hand... very filling and good "comfort" food for those cold days)

-veggie chili (beans, onions, tomatoes, spices, a bit of tofu and any other veg you like)

-fat free/sugar free creamsicles and fudgsicles; when you are craving "junk" food, these are a lifesaver

_I drink grean tea, lots of it, with breakfast, lunch and after dinner, and especialyl when I get a craving. I just love it.

_Fresh veggies are also a favorite "free" snack of mine. Carrots, grape tomatoes, cucumber, green/red pepper and celery are favorites.

_Non Fat yogurt, by the brand "Cascade Fresh" is just so yummy. And it's organic and doesn't have any artifical ingredients.

_Apples. I can't get enough of 'em!

_Tofu Shirataki noodles. I can now eat pasta again!

-Boca and Gardenburger's soy burgers. I just love their taste and are an excellent source of protein.

I have only one secret:
I chew lots of sugar free gum.

It really helps get through the work day to avoid the snacking that I see my co-workers doing. Plus of course, very low calories, and strengthens crewing muscles - cleans teeth, etc.

But it doesn't help if you are really hungry. :)

Thanks for the great recommendations! I am actually trying a few of these - gum makes me hungry faster though TheWarden - but I agree it helps to cut out snacking!

Zen Bakery Fiber Cakes or Fiber One. I also force myself to down a glass of water with some sugar-free metamucil when I get hungry - all that fiber expands in your stomach and makes you feel better...

best thing if you are hungry is to have a can of diet coke - has very few calories, and because it is quite 'gassy', it seems to fill you up quicker!!

I like to cut an apple in two and core it, then put a thin spread of peanut butter between the two halves.

Also Smart Pop popcorn from Orville Redenbacher is only 15 calories per cup.

I also like to replace some meals with a banana and a Advant Edge chocolate carb shake. It works out to:
Shake 1g impact carbs, 15g protein, 2g fiber with 100 calories and the banana is 17.5g carbs, 1.4g protein, 2.5g fiber, and also around 100 calories. The two combined make you feel really full and taste great together.

I like going to Jamba Juice and having a shot/ounce of weat grass with a slice of orange. Hey guys, a shot of weat grass is equal to 2 1/2 pounds of raw vegetables! :)

Just a note-- your body needs food when it is hungry, and it knows exactly what it needs. So the secret ain't fooling it into thinking it's not hungry, but listening to which nutrients it wants and then eating them until you are satisfied (not stuffed). This prevents bingeing and non-hunger eating because you are not depriving your body.

I eat copious amounts of "Steam in the Bag" microwave Broccoli. I love it with pepper, 1carb ketchup and low cal hot sauce. Also for times when I want sweet things I blend 1 cup of fat free milk (90cals), 1/2 cup fat free vanilla yogurt (90cals), 20-30 pkts Splenda,3 cups water, 3 cups crushed ice, and put in a large (makes a high volume) container in the freezer. Wait like 6-9 hours and enjoy.

Kefir!!! unsweetened kefir!
i have discovered that at 122 calories for one cup,
14g protein,
2 g fat and
3 grams fiber..
this works out to ww 2pts. whereas regular lowfat yogurt has no fiber making it 3pts.

p.s. i just found this site as i was googling the vitamin water: energy flavor
the fiber listed is inulin
(which boosts calcium absorption) one cup also supplies 30% of daily calcium needs and
I have noticed i do not have any more leg cramps upon waking in the am!

but my number one snack diversion is tea lattes!!
esp at nite.
currently my two favs are: orange spice rooibos tea (from trader joe's) and
just newly discovered!...
celestial seasonings ...
dessert tea>>> english toffee tea.
this one is like having toffee! roasted carob, barley, chicory with natural english toffee flavor and cinnamon. even has milk thistle! (good for liver)
for my tea i also heat up 1/4 cup unsweetened soy milk
and microwaved,
then use my little battery powered latte frother
and pour over my tea
and dust with unsweetened dark choc powder.

so it really is like a treat!

p.s. i just found this great site when i was googling vitamin water; energy flavor

Great blog!
I make a very simple smoothie:
3/4 cup Stonyfield fat free French Vanilla yogurt
1 cup 1% milk
1 cup frozen fruit (peaches, strawberries, blueberries).

It tastes like an ice cream shake but it's very low in fat & has tons of calcium. I am living on these now that I'm pregnant.

Fruit, fruit, fruit! Apples, oranges, grapes, berries. It's all good and mostly low calorie! Also I love Fiber One Cereal. And of course water. No calories there! And we could all use more water, especially when eating so much fiber. :)
